Cops for Kids: two organizations, two different messages

As we continue to scrutinize Mooresville’s Cops for Kids, we can better understand just how improperly our organization was run by Police Chief John Crone by looking at how a similar organization operates. The comparison speaks volumes.

To disadvantaged children living in and around California’s Lake Elsinore Valley, Santa Claus wears a badge and carries a gun.

About 1,000 children who may have otherwise woken up to no presents under a Christmas tree last year stormed the Diamond minor-league baseball stadium in Lake Elsinore, California, where “the entire third base concourse was full of toys,” said Jason Brown, a member of the Cops for Kids board of directors.

He said that each child was able to choose two new toys that were either donated or purchased from Cops for Kids funds, which are raised by annual fundraisers and contributions from corporate sponsors, businesses and individuals. Santa Claus visited the children at the Stadium, and a local photographer was on hand, snapping complimentary photos of nearly 300 families with the jolly old elf. The sheriff’s department Explorers volunteered at the event, which Brown said ran plentiful of Santa’s favorite snack: cookies.

California’s Cops for Kids Christmas event hasn’t always been held at the Diamond, Brown said. Instead, in past years, Santa’s “sleigh and reindeer” was a caravan of patrol cars from the Lake Elsinore Police Department and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, delivering Christmas gifts to the area’s disadvantaged children and elderly shut-ins.

But last Christmas, when requests for assistance doubled that of previous years, Cops for Kids had to find a more efficient way to serve the children, Brown said. “It’s a great program we have here,” he added.

The Cops for Kids program in California was created in 1995 by two sheriff’s deputies “who saw a need to help children at Christmas time,” states the Cops for Kids, Inc. website. The officers, while on routine patrol during the holiday season, would hand out gifts to disadvantaged children. (It was this story from the California organization’s website that Mooresville’s Cops for Kids copied, almost verbatim, the alleged story of its founding.)

Thirteen years later, Cops for Kids has grown into a year-round program that assists children, families and senior citizens in need of emergency funding for transportation to school or work, temporary shelters, clothing, and education expenses.

Cops for Kids “works directly with the school districts” for referrals of children to the program, Brown said. The Cops for Kids website includes a referral form, and people “can come in anytime” to the police station to refer someone to the program or request assistance themselves, Brown said.

He said that Cops for Kids – which is a 501(c)(3) – reviews each and every referral, conducts interviews and checks income “to make sure it’s not a bogus request.” The program has one paid employee – its executive director. All other helpers, including the involved officers, volunteer their time.

In addition to helping out with emergency funding and spreading holiday cheer to area children in need, Cops for Kids hosts Bingo games with seniors and holds a Christmas luncheon with those who are living out their days in retirement communities.

This past Christmas, Cops for Kids volunteers, along with sheriff’s deputies, sheriff’s department Explorers and members of a nearby high school choir ,“visited many of the valley’s senior homes,” reads the Cops for Kids website. “We went inside each home, as many as 20 of us brought Christmas gifts and cheer and sang Christmas carols.

“Thanks to the choir members and their awesome teacher … we actually sounded pretty good,” the website quips. “Cops for Kids volunteers and Sheriff's deputies are not necessarily known for their singing voices!”

California’s Cops for Kids has a simple mission: “to ensure all children, regardless of circumstances, are provided the basic necessities that all children should enjoy” and “to provide senior citizen outreach and assistance based on the individual needs of life.” It is a mission the California organization lives up to.

Compare that to the Mooresville Police Department’s Cops for Kids mission. Until a few weeks ago, the overall mission of our Cops for Kids program – as presented on the police department’s website – was verbatim (minus one sentence) that of the California Cops for Kids program. (See http://thegattonreport.blogspot.com/2008/06/cops-for-kids-still-more-questions-than.html). Under the standard used by the California Cops for Kids, the Mooresville version of the organization did virtually nothing in furtherance of the mission that was publicly presented via the Internet as its mission.

When confronted about that, Chief Crone removed the Cops for Kids page from the website and stated that neither he nor his two majors “have knowledge of approving this web page.”

“We are not incorporated, nor have we ever been, nor have we advertised that we are a 501C(3) charity,” Crone stated. “The Mooresville Police did not start their Cops for Kids until 1997 and no one is paid a salary. At one time we looked into applying for a 501C3 designation but we changed our mind and just left it under the police department.”

But if Cops for Kids was never intended to be a charity, what exactly was it supposed to be? What was its mission?

Since 2001, Cops for Kids has spent a majority of its “outreach” funds – raised through individual and business contributions, as well as an annual golf tournament – not to benefit underprivileged children in Mooresville, but to send the Mayor’s Youth Council and the Police Explorers on all-expenses paid trips to New York City; Washington D.C.; Pennsylvania; Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and Atlanta.

Mooresville’s Cops for Kids was supposed to be treating the Police Explorers to a 9-day trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon this month, but according to Interim Police Chief Carl Robbins, that trip has been cancelled.

Crone has called the Cops for Kids trips “educational” and “learning experiences.”

Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith, answering questions on Crone’s behalf recently, said the purpose of Cops for Kids is not to assist underprivileged or disadvantaged children, as presented to the public on the police department’s website, but to “benefit the youth of the community and build relationships between the youth and police department.”

If that’s true, then the message that Cops for Kids is sending to the youth of our community is a troubling one at best: that to be worthy of building a relationship with our police – to be worthy of “benefiting” in our community – one must either be interested in politics (Mayor’s Youth Council) or in law enforcement (Police Explorers).

Such a message contradicts the original stated purpose of Cops for Kids and what our community has been led to believe the program stood for. Of a sampling of contributors contacted recently by the Report, most said that when they donated to this year’s Cops for Kids golf tournament, they thought their money would go to assist underprivileged children in the Mooresville community. And almost every contributor said they planned to write off their donation as a tax deduction because they thought Cops for Kids was a registered charity.

But they can’t write it off, and it isn’t a charity. Instead, Cops for Kids is a fund to send the Mayor’s Youth Council and Police Explorers on trips.

How are those children selected? “There is an application process handled through the high schools” for the Mayor’s Youth Council, said Mayor Bill Thunberg. When asked who makes the final decision of members, he said: “I think the council votes and elects officers too.”

Robbins said the Police Explorers program “is open to both males and females between the ages of 14 and 21” and uses an application process. “Their school work and any disciplinary issues are taken into consideration,” Robbins said, adding that the Explorers group “is limited to 25 active members.”

In California, the Explorers volunteer at Cops for Kids events. In Mooresville, the Explorers – along with the Mayor’s Youth Council – are the beneficiaries of Cops for Kids.

In California, needy children are given brighter Christmases. In Mooresville, politically connected children are given all-expenses-paid, out-of-state vacations with their friends.

In California, police officers volunteer their time to help with Cops for Kids … driving their patrol cars around the community one evening out of the year, for instance, to take gifts to disadvantaged children. In Mooresville, officers and their wives “chaperone” the all-expenses-paid vacations for the Mayor’s Youth Council and the Police Explorers.

The trips aren’t cheap. Cops for Kids spent $3,250 just to charter a bus to take the two groups – consisting of 22 students, including the police chief’s daughter and the former mayor’s granddaughter, along with a whopping 14 chaperones (seven officers and their spouses, including Crone and his wife) – to Washington D.C. for two days last year.

It’s troubling to many people who donated to Cops for Kids that their contributions were used so carelessly. What’s heartbreaking is to consider the number of children in our community who could have and should have benefited from those dollars but weren’t able to because influential families wanted to go on vacation, eat at seafood buffets and attend music concerts, baseball games and amusement parks.

In California, a photographer provides cost-free pictures with Santa to disadvantaged children. In Mooresville, a digital camera captures a group of girls around the “Hershey’s chocolate” characters at the Hershey, PA amusement park.

In California, police officers intervene early with at-risk children who may eventually develop disdain for law enforcement. In Mooresville, our police chief and interim town manager send the message to our youth that the only children worth reaching out to are the very ones whose parents are already connected … the kids who aren’t likely to cause too much “trouble” … and even if they do, the cozy relationships created with the police chief may mean that their misdeeds will go “overlooked.”

That is the message we’re sending to the youth of our community. And as long as that’s the case, we’ll continue to get what we’re asking for.

Please tell me who these kids/parents were that went on these trips. The public needs to know which kids/parents benefited from the donations.

Why can't they take money still in the kitty and get back-to-school clothes, backpacks and shoes for these young people. It seems that would be a better use of funds than these elaborate trips for this particular time of the year. These kids need the necessities. You wouldn't feed your child dessert without first providing a balanced meal would you?Our beautiful state offers many chances for recreation that are a lot less costly than the choices made here. I'm just saying, in hard times, be practical. Some of those single moms could use gas or grocery cards.Let us the public give you some ideas.I'd even be willing to volunteer my time to help at Christmas if the community is allowed to help, but I'll only do so if this is run properly.

I would rather the names of the kids/parents not be released. I think the responsible thing is to keep the focus where it belongs-on the police chief. The kids went because the opportunity presented itself-the police chief offered it. They probably did not know that the money was meant for needy kids.

Very nicely written, Jamie!

I would be more interested in knowing the names of the donors who were led to believe that their donations and sponsorships were going to be used to assist the underprivileged in the community. Seems that they were severely misled by the information put out by the Chief. Isn't that called fraud? If he spends so much time worrying about surveilance of the coke machines, how could he NOT know what was on the website?

That, in and of itself, appears to be grounds for removing him from his position.

They also went to Niagra Falls, another casino hotbed. Wonder how much of that cash went from the Cops for Kids account onto the blackjack table, into the slots or for drinks at the hotel bar? I'm sure the SBI will figure it out, because you know those officers who went on the trips won't lie when they could face obstruction of justice charges.

What kind of logic says that you need to build a relationship between "police explorers" and the police department. IF all of what you have said is true...and I'm sure it is. Then they all need to go and forget the investigation.

Ok. We're beating a dead horse here. The points have been adequately made. However, Mr. Green, I have trouble addressing you as Reverend, I have never seen the clergy so bent on destroying someone. You should be ashamed. You have made your feelings toward Crone well known, would your time not be better suited to saving someone's soul? If he's guilty of something, he will be held accountable, but you seem to take pleasure in it. I suppose hell hath no fury like a Reverend scorned. And tic-toc, give it a rest. The hot air is killing us. I hope that doesn't inspire you to go "Jack Bauer" on me. Jaime, I find your posts well written and informed. This just seems redundant, though. I know there's been a "lull in the action", but it seems that you are repeating yourself now. I look forward to something new. I begin to long for another edition of "ink pen gate".

Your safe Tat, I can see it in your eyes that you are a good guy and a loyal friend to Mr Crone, just dont try to distract me from what I am doing because you still have no idea what is motivating me, nor would you understand it if I told you, but make no mistake Tat this is only the first inning of a double header. There is much, much more you dont know. Yet. It will become clear at a later date.

Oh and who the hell is Jack Bauer? And why do you keep calling me that?

Stay focused on this topic it is more important then you know.

Tat, I have already backed off, you missed my post on another thread this morning.

After further investigation I have decided that I am unable to post crimes on Monday as the Federal Statutes I would have been citing will involve more then 7 members of the police department and as many as 2 members of the town council. If I were to post the crimes and reasons why, I believe they committed it, it could quite possibly “interfere” with a federal investigation making me violate the law which I will not allow to happen.

The only thing I will be able to do is to tell the title of the statute I believe was violated and I see no reason to wait to monday, anything further is not the right thing for me to do as I will not hamper, impede or pervert the course of justice. Also, as I am not an expert on those laws it would only be my “belief” that the Act was violated and cause the 9+ people involved to have a difficult time in getting a “fair Trial”

I believe I have done my part for now and it is time for me to allow the investigation to move forward.

But make no mistake I believe these people violated the Federal R.I.C.O (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) Act and all should go to prison. I will continue posting crimes that Crone has committed that I believe I can prove until he is arrested and all of his assets seized and returned to the town.

To the FBI, the ball is in your court, and my offer still stands. Good luck.

It may be redundant to some, and to others it just doesn't seem to sink in, like that Radar guy on the town council. He sends out that email "newsletter" of his and it reads like some kind of fantasy world. He's totally ignoring the cash removed from the evidence room and into CFK and he's totally ignoring all the cash withdrawals from CFK. He totally ignores the various contradictory explanations given by Crone. The guy must be delusional. He is fighting hard for Crone. Wonder why? And who is he going to take down with him before it's over? Anybody who latches their cart to Radar's horse in this deal is making a serious mistake.

Those who know me call me Larry. Sorry you feel as if I have it in for this particular person. I honestly don't spend much time thinking about him. What I do spend time thinking about is the immense damage done to the entire community as a result of the actions of those in positions of leadership within our community. There has been no change in my position or beliefs, and I don't expect there to be anything which comes to light which will alter my perceptions of this particular situation. I hope I'm wrong, because I do have a tremendous amount of admiration and respect for the men and women who put their lives on the line for our town.

Men and women who have worked for the PD have been fired for similar allegations. Why should there be a different standard for this particular person?

However, I continue to pose questions because I think they are valid questions. Does it not appear that the CFK website advertised something which was drastically different from the reality?

I assume you're a church-going person. If you give money to go to the mission trip of your church and find out it went to pay for a vacation for the pastor, would you not be disturbed? The same applies here. Public trust has been demolished and has been excacerbated by the conflicting statements of the chief.

As for beating a dead horse, this IS the horse -- or at least the head of the horse. Jamie took time to interview the people whose website was copied by the MPD. It's vitally important to show that the purpose of CFK is to be a ministry to low-income families, and elderlies. This was the statement on the MPD website for CFK, but certainly did not reflect the reality of how the Chief spent their money.

I don't see any reason to stop beating the same old horse. Most folks on here have been very consistent in their beliefs, and I would assume they'll continue to be equally consistent in the future.

My question for you is, why do you feel such a need to push aside the topic of the CFK? Do you agree that there was a discrepancy between the public stateent of how funds were to be used, and the reality of how they were used? At a very minimum I would think you could agree to those two items.

Anonymous said...

Right on Target Reverend Green. I am sure they will blast you again on here but you are right.

Actually, I don't see this as "beating a dead horse". I see it as beating a live horse, if we must use such odious analogies. And I hope that Ms. Gatton continues to "beat it" until indeed it is a "dead horse". That, of course, will be when John Crone is off of the payroll toward which my tax dollars go.

this blog is certainly a help in getting crone out the door and generally making town government less corrupt, but it is not going to be enough by itself.

people need to show up in a big group the next time the town board meets and the board needs to be told in no uncertain terms that what happened was inexcusable and that action must be taken.

people like frank and mitch won't listen, but they are only 2 of 6. those 2 can either do the right thing or get run over. chris, miles, mac, and thurman are enough to do anything. it only takes 4 votes. let's help our clean commissioners understand that they have the power and they must use it!

When placed in the context of Mr. Crone committing violations of NC GS 14-100 which states,

“ If the value of the money, goods, property, services, chose in action, or other thing of value is one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) or more, a violation of this section is a Class C felony.”

As the total value of the property obtained will exceed 100,000 dollars (after the forensic accountant adds up the losses over the past 10 years) in value and Mr. Crone admitted to at least one count on television of violating 14-100 (and will therefore be convicted on all counts which will number in the hundreds) in regard to CFK paying for the holiday party for the department, Mr. Crone will be found guilty by a jury or judge of a Class “C” felony then NC GS 15a-1340.16a will kick in as Mr. Crone committed said act while displaying a firearm, which he would carry in the normal course of his position as the chief of police.

NC G.S. 15A-1340.16A
Page 1
§ 15A-1340.16A. Enhanced sentence if defendant is convicted of a Class A, B1, B2,
C, D, or E felony and the defendant used, displayed, or threatened to use
or display a firearm during the commission of the felony.
(a), (b) Repealed by Session Laws 2003-378, s. 2, effective August 1, 2003.
(c)
If a person is convicted of a Class A, B1, B2, C, D, or E felony and it is found
as provided in this section that: (i) the person committed the felony by using, displaying,
or threatening the use or display of a firearm and (ii) the person actually possessed the
firearm about his or her person, then the person shall have the minimum term of
imprisonment to which the person is sentenced for that felony increased by 60 months.
The maximum term of imprisonment shall be the maximum term that corresponds to the
minimum term after it is increased by 60 months, as specified in G.S. 15A-1340.17(e)
and (e1).
(d)
An indictment or information for the Class A, B1, B2, C, D, or E felony shall
allege in that indictment or information the facts set out in subsection (c) of this section.
The pleading is sufficient if it alleges that the defendant committed the felony by using,
displaying, or threatening the use or display of a firearm and the defendant actually
possessed the firearm about the defendant's person. One pleading is sufficient for all
Class A, B1, B2, C, D, or E felonies that are tried at a single trial.
(e)
The State shall prove the issues set out in subsection (c) of this section
beyond a reasonable doubt during the same trial in which the defendant is tried for the
felony unless the defendant pleads guilty or no contest to the issues. If the defendant
pleads guilty or no contest to the felony but pleads not guilty to the issues set out in
subsection (c) of this section, then a jury shall be impaneled to determine the issues.
(f)
Subsection (c) of this section does not apply if the evidence of the use,
display, or threatened use or display of the firearm is needed to prove an element of the
felony or if the person is not sentenced to an active term of imprisonment. (1994, Ex.
Sess., c. 22, s. 20; 2003-378, s. 2.

Mr. Crone, you chose not to do the right thing and turn yourself in when I told you too, now being an officer of the law, you must understand that every charge I level against you on the Gatton report MUST now be investigated to the fullest extent possible by the SBI in the case of state charges and the FBI and Secret Service for Federal Charges.

You may have been able to sweep this under the rug at one point but that is before I found out about your crimes not more then 6 days ago. I don’t know you, but I promise that just as you have charged criminals in your town with everything under the sun when you arrest someone for even so much as shoplifting, to make yourself look better you are now going to be charged with every singe violation I can think of as I am a firm believer in fair play. But don’t worry, I will only level charges I believe can be proven in court. No “pleas” here.

I am now turning the tables on you, you should have done more to protect the innocent people of your town and not ruin peoples lives with huge numbers of trumped of charges in an effort to make your self look better to the crooked people you serve. And to those people above and below you, I will be looking into you as well after, crone, you are “safely” behind bars, I am going after them with the law. Your town is my new cause celeb. And you are the poster boy.

I am your worst case scenario, I have a brain and a very deep understanding of the law and how things work in the justice system on a state and federal level. And the FBI reading this should understand this, when you call, I will come and help them just like I am helping the town, whether it knows it or not.

If I were a law enforcement officer, I might have some sympathy for you as the blue wall of silence dictates, but you are not that lucky.

And to the people reading this post, pick apart the law, do not attack me personally, prove him innocent.

Mr. Crone, you have another 72 hours to do the right thing, turn yourself in, I will go away and quit posting your crimes, I am not as vindictive as you to have someone arrested on a Friday night so that they MUST spend the weekend in jail before seeing a judge. I know your games. Bank on it.

Next charge, Monday afternoon, It gets worse and it will be federal this time.

You are who I have been waiting for, you have the power right now to go to the Mooresville Police Department and file at least 1 count of a violation of NC GS 14-100 right now, it will force the arrest of Chief Crone, right now. You are the victim!!! If you go file that charge, the police have no way to sidestep it and he will be arrested today, right now. That will force the loss of his badge and more importantly his TAXPAYER PAID PAY CHECK!!!

You are the victim this town needs to step forward, you said you wrote a check, go now and stop him from continuing his thefts from the people of Mooresville.

I understand if you dont feel comfortable doing that, but you are already going to be called to testify about that donation you mention. And that goes for anyone who gave a donation to the cheif or any of his officers.

You have the power in your hands now to do the right thing!

SAVE YOUR TOWN NOW!!! It is your "duty" as a citizen of the United States of America, dont let him take that from you to, I beg you.

Dear Ms. Gatton:

I have read your articles with regard to this situation with great interest. I found this particular article especially poignant and heartwrenching. It is plain to see that the Cops For Kids program run by Mr. Crone stands in stark contrast to that which is run out of California.

After reading your article, I began to read your readers' comments. I had the misfortune to happen upon comments written at 1:55 this morning.

I could be mistaken in my estimation, but the writer of the comment appears to be ridiculing what has occurred in this tragic situation, which has now resulted in the suspension of the police chief of a community, going on two weeks now.

It is deeply disturbing to know there is someone in this community who would make light of this situation, regardless of their beliefs and regardless of their stance on this issue.

To equate the alleged mishandling of a charity meant for young children with the theft of a pen is moral degeneration at its worst. It is frightening, to say the least, to learn that we have people such as this supporting the chief of police.

Thank you for your moral courage to continue to inform your readers of all aspects of this situation, including the human aspect.

So, the Crone-apologist, Erskine Smith, tells us that what Crone was doing was ok because CFK was supposed to "benefit the youth of the community and build relationships between the youth and police department.” My question is WHICH "youths"? The youths I've seen "benefit" from CFK already have positive "relationships" with MPD and others in "authority" in this town. What a farce! No matter how you cut this cake, Crone has committed misconduct or worse. End of story. And we're still paying him so that he can cavort around town influencing the jury pool.

At least it has now been cancelled. Thank God for little favors.

ARE you being threatned by Steve Gambill??What happened to all this 1st amendment talk?Is this communist Russia. My guess is it's too close to home and although she is in charge uptown, she is pulling strings with someone close to you. Did they threaten you with a lawsuit?

God bless you Jaime for such important truths. We noticed in yesterdays papers that the "rat pack" is "sucking up" to the citizens. Telling Duke Power that they are taking the water for the citizens of Mooresville; wanting a meeting to converse about new parks and going to fix the pesky downtown lights.
My, my, how fast they can be when their butts (forget the feet) are on the fire.

My husband & I fought the mayor and commissioners for a few years (with much, much help from other fighters of the cause)and we all managed to accomplish some good but Jaime Gatton has opened a door that will (WILL) scoot the corrupt ones out of Mooresville's leadership.

Keep up the good work, dear heart, your blog has done more in such a short time than we could ever have imagined

Stop "Not Looking" Be legal, Be Active. But no "Kidnapping"

Take this statement, print it off in big bold letters and tape it to your car window where it does not obstruct you view. Like those police stickers, but not.

I bet they show up all over town in a couple days. PR on the cheap.

Good officers will know you are behind them, bad officers will know you are out to get them.

If you want to get fancy, go to cafepress.com and have shirts and bumper stickers made.

Keep them on your vehicles and front doors until election day, Then watch as change start to happen.

Despite aggressive efforts by a poster to derail this Vigil, this is a continuation of the "Count Up Vigil" of the number of days which pass from the day Cops For Kids scandal broke (7/4/08) to the day that Police Chief Crone and Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith are both suspended, terminated or resign.

The Police Chief was suspended (with pay) on Tuesday, 7/8/08. The community clearly continues to be relieved and deeply grateful to whatever forces brought that timely suspension about. However, serious questions are now mounting with regard to Mr. Smith's decision to continue paying Mr. Crone a salary.

Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith, Mr. Crone’s supervisor, remains in his position and continues to operate still. Therefore I shall continue this Vigil until he, too, vacates any post he holds as a public official in Mooresville due to his role in this matter as well as other matters that have been brought to light.

The town board has placed Finance Director Maia Setzer in charge of oversight of the CFK process (including but not limited to any investigations) which indicates that they, too, lack confidence and trust in the Interim Town Manager. Despite this lack of confidence, Mr. Smith remains in his position, a position to which the Finance Director reports.

The information I specifically refer to is:

1) documented misrepresentations made by Mr. Smith with regard to the nonprofit corporation known as Cops For Kids

2) Mr. Smith's direct recommendation to the town board to include the nonprofit corporation known as Cops For Kids into the town's general budget

3) Mr. Smith's failure to perform due diligence in his capacity as Interim Town Manager by properly researching Cops For Kids prior to submitting his recommendation to the town board

4) Mr. Smith's involvement in a questionable commission in the amount of $237,151.50 as outlined in the Gatton Report blog entry dated 4/18/08 and titled “Friends don’t let friends gouge Mooresville taxpayers”, the contents of which have never been publicly disputed by Mr. Smith

5) Mr. Smith’s failure or refusal to change Mr. Crone’s status to “unpaid” suspension despite the surfacing of various contradictory statements made by Mr. Crone in the media since his suspension

This is Day No. 17.

Anonymous said...

The more I read about this and think about it the more disgusted I feel. We don't even need no investigation. Why're we wasting the money? Crone took money under false pretenses. He committed fraud against our community and against our needy. He went on high falutin' vacations with his family on that money while the rest of us have to save our pennies to take our families somewhere half decent. I don't want somebody like this running the garbage dump let alone the police department.

Jamie,

Who answered this question?

Did Smith really say that?

It is very important, please respond on you blog ASAP

Thanks

Smith's answers, in italics, came Thursday afternoon, too late to be published in Friday’s Tribune:

1) Who is in charge of organizing events, advertising for events, and accepting and distributing money for this organization?

A number of officers and administration staff take part in the events. A number of officers receive funds for COPS for Kids who then turn the funds into Chief Crone and or Debbie Harding who make deposits.

Jaime Gatton said...

Hey, 7:48! Yes, that is the answer that the Tribune received on July 3 from Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith. The Tribune's questions were posed via e-mail to Smith and Police Chief John Crone on July 2. Smith responded on behalf of both men.

Anonymous said...

Get that list, it is a list of people who raised money and it must be kept for 2 years, it is public information and now that smith has admitted that, he must turn it over to you under the freedom of information act.

It is the smoking gun I was looking for, everyone on it is going to jail, and it ties the conspiercy together for the violation of the RICO Act.

It is against the law to to turn it over, smith, harding, crone and everone under it are felons right now.

Tic Toc

Tell Ms. Harding not to worry though, they wont charge her but they will confront her and I suggest she tell the truth, everone else who touched that money is a crook.

If your reading, I did not mean to frighten you Ms. Harding, but be prepared to answer some very tough questions.

Although he does need to get some better taste in music though, but that is not a crime LOL

Anonymous said...

BTW, this should be a lesson for all you parants out there, it took me 5 minutes to find out his whole life, be very carful what you let your kids put on the internet, it is a very dangerous place, most people are not like me.

Oh yea, and Jamie, lets do something harder, this only took 9 days from the time I found out about it.

Cant figure out why law enforcement wants months except that the American public has a very short attention span and 3 months from now, they would have probably just slapped crone on the wrist and would have given him his job back. Problem is what if he comes to my town with a badge, I cant have that.

Anonymous said...

Police Chief John Crone should do the honorable thing and resign. There is no circumstance imaginable under which he can return to his position. The mere fact that the most recent Cops For Kids trip has been canceled highlights this reality. Considering all that has transpired, it seems an impossibility that confidence can be restored in him.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I had to reread that, I wont tell much but I will say this, Tat is a reference to a tatoo that the man has on his arm, it is very unique and I called him tat so he knew I found him and he would tone his crap down, Tat is G. G. Allin or Bic as he like to call himself now.

I doubt he will be back now, dont worry he is harmless.

Anonymous said...

Dont kid yourself, John Crone is going away for a long time, the case I made against him is not just beyond a reasonable doubt, it is beyond ANY Doubt or I would not have posted it, he is a Class C Felon, basicly just awaiting to formality of a trail, there is no way out of the case I made, I promise you that much, OJ Simpsons lawyers could not get him out of it

Anonymous said...

Ticky Tack.....first I was Chief Crone, then I was a crooked cop, who am I this week? Please I want to know. You know what else I am curious about? How your mentally unstable ass functions on a daily basis? What time does your "helper" come over and help you tie your shoes? I have you figured out, Cops For Kids didnt give you the crayons and Barbie that you asked for so now you have a huge score to settle.

Anonymous said...

The sad part is, that if he would have turned himself in, I only need him to be arrested for 1 count of violating NC GS 14-100 and I would have left him alone after that, The level I went to was because he did not do that, It is his fault and no one elses that he will now be found guilty of hundreds of Class H Felonies, and how ever many times that golf tournemt was held is how many counts of a class C felony, He will never get out of prison for the rest of his life.

Its sad, but I cant go to the next step of this without him being charged, he thought he was calling my bluff, but I was not bluffing, I dont bluff, but he gambled, just like he would have in Vegas, but he did it with me, and that is a losing proposition.

Oh and I could have trown a bad check charge in there too, but I tought that was overkill.

In Living Color was a great show. But corruption isn't funny. Your police chief is entering the third full week of his suspension. Other officers have been suspended without pay and fired for much, much less than what has already been proven in this case. You might not like Tic Toc's style, but you know his basic point is right. Perhaps you should join him in simply asking for equal justice under the law. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hey guys, how bout getting back on point. 1. Money from evidence room. 2. Purpose of organization misrepresented. 3. Large cash withdrawals. You can beat up on each other until the cows come home, but it does not change these issues. It is not personal as between the posters or even as between the posters and Crone. It is business as between the citizens and their government.

You are correct, and I apologize. I was angry last night and I consider it to be self defense. However, I will not address him again.

Thank You

Anonymous said...

Here's "business between citizens and their government". What's Erskine Smith doing still lounging around his house at 9:30 in the morning while the rest of us grunts are up and about working so that we can pay our taxes so that he can get his fat paycheck so that he can keep protecting corrupt department heads and give the good ones a hard time? Before "Doodoo Eater" (a/k/a Ink Pen Guy or whatever else he calls himself these days) says anything to me about taking time to write this post, I am self-employed and unlike Erskine Smith am not stealing time from anybody.

I guess his bosses must all be out of town. While the cat's away the mouse will play. Last time I checked Town Hall opens around 8 or 8:30 and his generous behind needs to be there when the doors open.

Anonymous said...

Self-Employed huh? You must really be busy if you have all this time to stalk Erskine. You sheep are unbelievable.

Anonymous said...

Who am I today Tip Tap? Lets pull up some more random Myspace profiles and pick one. Or can I be a Federal Marshall who is in cahoots with the Mayor and the Board.

Anonymous said...

Who said I check on Erskine Smith? There is an entire community watching him right now and there is such a thing as cellphones. Sorry there's nowhere to hide now if you're corrupt and stealing anything from us, including time. G.G. Allin a/k/a Doodoo Eater (we now know all about what type of people you choose to idolize and you call OTHERS sheep. That's rich), Erskine Smith and the police chief can have each other.

Anonymous said...

“It stands to reason that Smith would like nothing more than for everyone in this community to remain “positive” and “tolerant” as he goes about his business comfortably and without being scrutinized, questioned and exposed. Unfortunately for him, that scenario is not likely to happen, and his wishful thinking has not materialized since the Pandora’s Box was first opened several years ago.”

Anonymous said...

Hey people. Don't forget Frank Radar. He's still gung ho about getting Smith the town manager job and doubling his salary. It was right there in his latest email he sent out to all the people who laugh at everything he sends out, including yours truly. It's so obvious he uses his email to spread his grandiose delusions. Anyway, don't forget he belongs in the same boat as Crone and Smith.

Anonymous said...

A G.G. Allin groupie calling corruption busters "lunatics". Now I've heard it all.

Anonymous said...

Where's all this "proof" that Chief Crone did anything wrong? I have seen nothing except "reports" of this and that. If there was any "proof" we would have already seen it on this blog.

Anonymous said...

These sheep dont need proof. They are happy with rumors and allegations. Anything that gets their minds off their own miserable existence.

Anonymous said...

What was posted on the blog and in the Mooresville Tribune was obviously enough to warrant an investigation by the SBI. Maybe you think they're sheep too. I'm sure they'll be looking for the proof. If you would like to dispute what the blog and the paper have reported, maybe you should go look at the "proof" yourself and report back to us. You seem like a sharp enough guy.

Anonymous said...

9:45 - I'm agraid you have used the perfect word to describe Frank. Delusional. He was a strange little boy growing up, and nothing has changed much. He is the quintessential Trust Baby, but he is also extremely parsimonious, as evidenced by his refusal to use his own vehicle when conducting "town business", if you can call "Go Sees", whatever they are, as town business. Instead he has apparently taken over the former town manager's vehicle, while his colleagues on the town board use their own vehicles and several of them do not even request reimbursements for fuel, although none of them are as wealthy as Frank is. Many of us had great hopes for Frank, despite his quirky nature. He has proven to be a terrible disappointment. Frank's latest "Rader At Large" publication was very eye opening, to say the least.

Anonymous said...

Oh Gawd, I smell the Kool-Aid lady back on this blog. Isn't she getting tired of backing the criminals? I guess you kind of develop a liking for them when you're married to one. We're still waiting on that SBI report honey. Won't take our eye off that ball, not ever. Thanks for the reminder.

Anonymous said...

I have never said it wasnt enough to justify an investigation. I have also said many times that if Chief Crone is proven guilty in a court of law then he should be punished. What gets me is how some of your fellow sheep have wanted to lock him up and fire him since day one.

Anonymous said...

In case you haven't noticed, people get fired everyday for non-criminal stuff. Maybe you want to live in a town run by the absolute lowest standards, but some of us don't. We want the highest standards. We want a police chief who will not go out into the community, collect funds under the cover of a charity and then use those funds to take expensive trips. You can have your selectively low standards, and we will have our high standards.

Anonymous said...

July 22, 2008 9:45 AM

Amen and amen. I read earlier in this blog that Commissioner Frank Rader was championing putting the Cops For Kids into the general fund up until the last possible moment, even as television stations were breaking the news about the corrupt way the charity was handled. Now that is truly the definition of delusional. Rader is definitely out of touch and totally "out there". Just a little scary if you ask me.

Let me just say this to animal control, there is a picture on that myspace page of his brother feeding a dog beer from the bottle.

If any one thinks I am upset with crone, it is nothing compared to feeding a dog alcohol and drugs.

But not to worry, I am looking for the number to ASPCA to turn his bearded butt over to the dog catcher.

But apparently stupidity runs in the family. He is going to jail for animal cruelty as soon as I get that number or web address.

I forgot about that.

Good Luck, jail cell next to crones is open.

Matter of fact, I am sure that the Good Mooresville police are reading this, look at that page under pictures, find him, get a warrent and raid his house right now.

I am sure you will find plenty of drugs and dumb ass's there,

To the Cops, there are two ways to get his address,

1. Go to the school with the picture from myspace and they will tell you who and where he is.

Or match Jamies IP logs to the time and date stamp.

Got you now to sparky, wonder what your brother is going to think of you now.

Anonymous said...

Mooresville's "Cops For Kids" finances fancy trips for the chief of police, his wife, his daughter, a former mayor's granddaughter, the chief's favorite officers and their wives.

California's Cops For Kids?

"The Cops for Kids program in California was created in 1995 by two sheriff’s deputies “who saw a need to help children at Christmas time,” states the Cops for Kids, Inc.

All other helpers, including the involved officers, volunteer their time."

Read and weep...This entire town has been robbed and the thieves are investigating themselves.

Anonymous said...

I do agree with you. That is something that shouldnt be done to a dog.

Anonymous said...

The manner in which Police Chief Crone mishandled Cops For Kids is unacceptable under any circumstance. As police chief he is charged with conducting himself in a manner that is beyond reproach. This situation is far from "beyond reproach". For the sake of this community, for the sake of his officers and for the sake of his family, Chief Crone must do the noble thing and resign and allow a new leader to take the helm and allow this community to begin healing.

Anonymous said...

All of you engaging in the little tit for tat need to take a look at today's new post about Frank Rader and see if you can deal with this serious matter in a serious manner. The "short bus" stuff is deeply offensive to me as a parent of an autistic child. It is a sad day when people like this "short bus" person are the only support the chief of police can muster up. And the support is solely in the form of personal insult instead of addressing the issues.

Anonymous said...

Thank you 9:04 for speaking to this point. I do not have a child with special needs; however, I have read with horror the repeated references to the mentally challenged by a certain poster in this blog.

I find it despicable that anyone would use the plight of mentally challenged people as fodder for their jokes under any circumstance, let alone against those who make the courageous choice to hold government accountable for all of our sakes.

I speak to Ms. Gatton and her supporters. Please continue to bring to light that which we need to see.

July 22, 2008 7:25 PM - you asked "Where does Mr. Smith live?"
Mr. Smith lives on Cedar Street. He does not response to e-mails and does not like to be bothered with returning phone calls, unless if they are from his small "inner circle". But if you really need to get in touch with him, he can usually be found on any number of golf courses during work hours.

We are going to stalk, errr I mean "keep an eye on" Erskine 24/7. You, the sheep, I mean loyal taxpayers will recieve daily updates on all of Erskines movements and activities. Our mission started last night at midnight. Thumb Tac and myself hid in the bushes at Erskines house making sure that he was hard at work and no tax dollars were wasted. His day started at 6 am with a cup of coffee and a piece of toast with jelly. Did the taxpayers pay for that jelly? We logged that question in our books for Captain Gatton to investigate. He then took a shower for 15 minutes. We couldnt believe that he used that much water. Who does he think he is? That is taxpayers water, and he should only be allowed 17 second showers. The operation was going smoothly until Tip Top fell out of the tree and seperated his shoulder. Erskine got spooked and off to work he went. He is now at Town Hall. Updates will follow shortly.

Hey G.G., were you waiting outside a few years ago when Erskine cleaned out Karen Kahn's office without police accompanyment right after she was fired for stealing as the library director and while an active police investigation was underway? Were you observing him when he hooked his buddy McKnight up with a $230,000 commission on some land that the town paid over market value for? Were you watching him when he was taking favors from developers (golf tickets, etc.) while their proposals were under consideration by the board? Or how about the golf course mismanagement and theft of inventory under his watch? Looks like you've been falling down on the job, bud !!!

Anonymous said...

Sorry 3:46 I missed all that. What did the SBI have to say about that Golf Course situation? But guess what we did find out today. Erskine took 3 restroom breaks. 3!!!!!!! How dare he waste taxpayer time and money like that!!!

Anonymous said...

What did the SBI have to say about that Golf Course situation? That's right. We're still "waiting" on that report that has magically "disappeared". But we know one thing: How was Crone making the bulk of his slush fund Cops for Kids? Right there on the golf course. Looks to me like we need to roll these investigations into one.

Anonymous said...

That damn SBI must be in on the conspiracy too.

Anonymous said...

What was clear in the golf course inventory theft from both the town and from outside people who took their personal time to investigate it is that thousands of dollars of inventory was missing and unaccounted for in the golf course shop. But, without a criminal charge, which is apparently the town's standard for firing somebody (unless they are a "peon" like a regular police officer or street worker), the golf course continued business as usual. The SBI outcome is again irrelevant to those who believe in good government. It is purely a question of how do you want your business run? And by the way, to mask the losses of the golf course, they have now moved the groundskeeping under the general town budget. Another example of "Rader math". According to him, it is the only profitable operation the town has. In light of his other numbers and "logic" as reported by Ms. Gatton, pause a minute before you take that one hook, line and sinker. So keep up your irrelevant musings and keep digging. Your hole's getting bigger and bigger.

So what are we going to do about all this-Rader, Crone, Smith, etc?

I am going to email, call, write my commissioner and the mayor to put the screws to their thumbs about this. It's great that we have an outlet, but as long as everyone stays here just talking, it won't have as big of an impact.

Call the TV stations, call the editors, reporters of local news outlets, attend town board meetings in force. Send Rader a letter and tell him the thing to do is resign now. Do the same to Crone. Rader lives on Lowrance Avenue very near the entry to the municipal golf course, almost across the street from Mitchell Mack. He says his door is always open- put him to the test.

DEMAND that no more special meetings waste our tax dollars and reduce effectiveness of the town's services(I'm sure they'd have rather been on Mars than listening to his dribble anyway). Demand the town mismanager take disciplinary action againest rader for this incident.

Speak up!!!!! We can't sit on our duffs and trust anyone else to take action. WE have to make our voices known. Take back our town for honesty and integrity now.

Now you're gettin' it.

Fire crone now, and then fire his supervisor. End of story.

Hey folks, what do you think of this for our anti-corruption slogan:

STOP,LOOK,LISTEN,REPORT.

Stop corruption, look and report unlawful activity, listen for unfair and illegal activity and report these things to those who will actually let it see the light of day.

I have to tell you it was shocking to read that for 7 years now, Crone's Cops for Kids has been pretty much getting funded through a "golf tournament". I guess this is through Mooresville Golf Course, the same place that we've been sinking hundred of thousands of dollars into with no return. The same place that happens to be one of Commissioner Rader's pet projects, and now we all know what he's been up to with the MPD. The same place that all the inventory mysteriously disappeared in, was never found, and the investigations were covered up (under Crone's watch - how convenient)

So, let me see if I get this straight. The checks I wrote to Cops for Kids went to: 1) the mismanaged golf course, 2) caterers for fancy feasts that had nothing to do with needy people, and 3) expensive trips for Crone and his entourage. Yep, that's what I thought my money was going toward when I wrote my checks.

It sure would be nice to get some more details on that Las Vegas trip. Surely there are some public documents on this such as hotel reservations and flight reservations. It seems obvious that the "cash" out of the organization would have gone at least partially towards gambling and alcoholic beverages on this trip. And what were the kids going to do all day (and all night) long. No one under 21 is allowed in the casinos.

Anonymous said...

Great points 12:57. So they just call off the Las Vegas trip and call it Even Stevens? Just like that. No questions about what would have happened if Gatton hadn't started asking questions.

I heard a rumor that Crone has resigned. Anybody know if that's true?

Anonymous said...

Hey Crone, Rader, Abraham!!
Do you hear that sound? It's kind of muffled at first but, wait!
Yeah,that's it...
munch,munch,munch

The SHEEP are in your backyards and in your BUSINESS boys.RESIGN,NOW and spare yourselves some real serious embarassment before this thing gets out of hand. There's a bad moon rising over Mooresville called the press and they are coming after the truth. They have eyes and ears everywhere- in your cars,in your offices,at the lodge, at the links, hey, we're even in your bedrooms.
Take a long hard look and decide if it's really worth it to continue or save face and do the right thing.

Resign.

The public is mobilizing to take charge as we speak.

Resign. Now.

Hey, Erskine. Add your name to that list. Munch. Munch. Munch. Baaaa

Guess what? The sheep are now in your BIDNIZ boys. What do you think about that? Gonna blame it on Tic Toc? Or maybe Hey Koolaide?
Nah, it's just us, your friendly taxpayers, affectionately known as meal tickets or sheep.

Anonymous said...

They might have looked at us like their meal tickets, but now we're gonna eat them for dinner.

Boy, the defiance is getting softer and softer from Cronies. I guess that means you-know-who is relevant after all, huh?

Get'em Jaimie!

You folks who are yelling for blood are the perverbial "Lynch Mob".

I beleive the Constitution allows for the presumtion of innocence until proven guilty. But, then again, I guess that only counts for the criminals in this society, not the God fearing, public servants of this society who protect you all every day.

A Blog, written by an out of work reporter seems to be the only horn sounding in this issue. A smart person would see this is a personal vendetta. I wonder what dirt will be found on the writer of this Blog. Well, we will see. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

Anonymous said...

10:43 – I fear systematic abuse by the same public servants more than a random act of crime. You mention no verdict, I guess guilty of what, a crime? That is a possibility, but yes, I agree, no courtroom verdict yet given.

However, the facts posted, and interestingly enough not being disputed, and being responded to by Mr. Rader in a very inappropriate manner via his Rader at large emails, and if true his visit to MPD (also not being denied and in fact being confirmed) are totally unacceptable acts.

That is enough for me; the bar for employment termination is far lower. I desire either an immediate and full explanation, and none seems to be forth coming, or as a tax payer and therefore employer of Mr. Crone, Mr. Rader and Mr. Smith, termination of employment for cause.

Should be easy, the art of resignation or termination has been elevated to an art here.

I don’t know Ms Gatton, nor care if employed or not, I wouldn’t care if a homeless drug addict were the one to bring this to light, nor would I care if Ms Gatton turned out to be a fanatical creationist anti secular bible belt inbred terrorist ... if these facts are not disputed, disproven or satisfactorily explained, I am grateful for the insight and good riddance to those whom have been abusing those whom they are supposed to be working for.

You steal at work, get caught; you get fired, not sent to jail, unless the abuse is at such a level that requires the cost, possible publicity and prosecution of etc...

Why would you care if it is a vendetta, as long as it is factual and just?

It is unheard of and inexcusable that we have had a suspended police chief on the town's payroll for nearly four weeks now. This type of "stalemate" can cause divisiveness in the community. It can lead to unnecessary unrest. And it can lower our level of safety and protection. The elected officials are directly responsible if this community is harmed in any way as a result of such indecisiveness.

On June 28th, A woman in Oak Blossom Way, Whitsett, held a charity event (“Community Awareness Day”). It turned out the organization she was representing doesn't exist as a nonprofit in North Carolina. Officers involved made comments such as she “conned 100 or more people into participating by giving money or services” and "We were excited about the cause and helping out with the foundation until we found out it was a hoax," and that “she didn't keep her story about the foundation straight.”
One person commented “I felt like her heart was in the right place, but you know, a lot of people come in with their heart in the right place and don't have the expertise or management skills to back it up."
Whether her heart was in the right place or not, on July 18th, only 20 days after this charity event, this woman was charged with “obtaining property under false pretenses” and was promptly arrested.
I made some calls to see exactly why our chief of police is still walking around while this woman is sitting in jail. Turns out that in her case the D.A. made the move to charge her, while in our case, our D.A. has not yet done so. This is a disgrace and an outrageous example of how inequitably justice is dispensed by those who are charged with being fair and impartial.

Who’s our D.A.? Garry Frank

What’s his e-mail? cdagwf@nccourts.org

Send him this link about this woman and demand to know why Crone isn’t sitting in jail right now.

Hey 7/28 10:43 you are late to the game with your "shoot the messenger" mentality. And just how is it that you know that Crone is "God fearing" and what the heck does that have to do with whether or not he should be fired for his actions. Of course, I don't need to say anything. You were fully rebuffed by the next guy anyway. Put up or shut up: what justifies a police chief taking huge cash withdrawals from his "charity"? We've been waiting for the answer for four weeks now. What justifies a police chief taking money from the evidence room and putting it in an account that only he controls? And how is it that his manager allows him to stay employed under these circumstances? Last I heard, Richard Nixon was never convicted of a crime, but at least he had the good sense to resign.

Anonymous said...

to add to the comments of 8:51-
Jaimie is a stay-at-home Mom and the Mother of 2 lovely children.
Her ability to report the news has nothing to do with being employed or not. Obviously you are not a Mom or you'd understand wanting to be at home with a newborn.
Everything she has published has been substantiated with fact. So, why don't you just come to this August 4th meeting and see for yourself what this is all about. aND, follow it up by going to the board meeting that night. You might just have your eyes opened to some of the tactics we have had to endure here for the last 50 years or so.
How would you like someone dipping into your personal account, spending what they want, when they want and not having to answer to you even though you are paying for it? Don't like that mentality? Neither do we.

For the last time.

We are waiting for the resignations of 3.

"It is unheard of and inexcusable that we have had a suspended police chief on the town's payroll for nearly four weeks now."

I don't think so. The investigation is continuing and not wrapped up, so that's why the suspension continues.

I doubt the length of time is unheard of.

Anonymous said...

Maybe it's the "payroll" part that is particularly galling. In light of the published evidence. That certainly doesn't make sense unless somebody is working their connections in the community with the perceived power base. Notice I say "perceived".

Anonymous said...

July 29, 2008 11:03 PM wrote "I doubt the length of time is unheard of." Whether this is unheard of or not, it is still INEXCUSABLE. Frank, is that you? Or maybe it's the mayor? Or Smith. Every single day that passes your hole's getting a little deeper and that much harder to dig out of.
