Chief spending holiday weekend at PD reviewing Cops for Kids records

One comment posted yesterday asked if Police Chief John Crone and Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith would continue to have access to their offices over the long holiday weekend.

I decided it was worth checking out.

I drove through the Mooresville Police Department parking lot at around 1 p.m. today, and Crone’s patrol car was in fact there.

When he was reached by phone in his office at 1:35 p.m. today and asked why he was in the police department over a holiday weekend, he stated that he was “trying to prepare a presentation for the town board on Cops for Kids.”

When asked if the Cops for Kids records are still at the police department, as opposed to the finance department where they were supposed to be moved after the Tribune and Report completed their review of them on Monday, Crone stated: “Are the Cops for Kids documents here with me? I have copies of most of the documents that you all looked through last week.”

He said that the original documents themselves, however, have been moved to the finance department.

Are you friggin' kidding me????? We're supposed to believe Crone that all these documents were "moved" to finance department and that he's only got copies??? Talk about the fox guarding the henhouse. Let's see...IF they were moved (which I don't believe), WHO moved them, and did they make sure that ALL of them were moved? Let me guess: It was the finance director who "moved" them? Same person who missed the fact that this is a scam charity. Or perhaps the town manager "moved" them? Same guy who's changed his story about a hundred times to make sure his precious chief of police is saved. Or perhaps Crone or one of his lackey "moved" them? Oh, yeah, I feel alot of "integrity" in this whole process. As much integrity as our "evidence room" now has!

Hoot...great job on these stories...as always. I have half a mind to show up at the meeting Monday night myself - and am not even a resident of Mo-Town! I hope the MPD has a squad car posted at your door and an escort wherever you go...it would behoove them all for you and yours to remain safe during and after this entire investigation. If not - I know where to start looking. I'm proud of you!

Chief Crone is in his office as we speak. I cannot wait to hear his explanations. I for one am rubbing my hands together because I expect to hear very clear reasoning for why money was moved from the Evidence Room into Cops For Kids and for where the unaccounted for $2,000 in cash went and for what happened to all the other $3,000, $5,000, $3,000 cash withdrawals. I am sure he will provide receipts and full explanations for all of this on Monday night since he is so hard at work right now over a holiday weekend.

I am so glad that the chief felt compelled to work so hard for Cops for Kids this weekend. As before it is not effort for the needy, but for Crone.(Cops for Crone) The sorry commissioners will hear his presentation and declare " I don't see anything improper, just a few mistakes in documentation." We are under seige here in Mooresville, not by the mafia, but the Moorfia! Our own little group of organized criminals who will do what it takes to win. Please call the media to attend the Monday night meeting.

totally unacceptable.

Here's an example of the fox being allowed to return to the henhouse, do some cleanup, and then pretend that all of the hens are just fine.

At a certain point, don't the proprietors of the hen house, who have done nothing to secure the scene, start to share blame?

Only in Mooresville.

so jamie, where are all the posts? do you edit the same way your ex-boss dale gowing does?he only reports what serves him, and very little of what we citizens want to hear about. the paper is 1/10th the size it was when the sullivans ran it. give it to larry as editor, then we'll have decent coverage.

9:06,

You may not be familiar with "blogger.com", the website that Jaime uses to host this site. There is a feature that allows the owner of the site to preview all comments and only allow what they want to be posted.

As far as I can tell, she is not using this. All posts go straight to the site.

As Panthers Coach John Fox would say "It is what it is".

so what's with all the anonymous? If you have something to say, have the ba--- to post your name. Jamie I am so proud of you. Give it to em girl. We all work way too hard for our money to have what we choose to give to less fortunate people used "unwisely"

If the golf tournament is for Cops for Kids and DARE, how much of the $27,000 went to DARE? The Police Department budget asks for $4,000 for DARE graduation for 2 schools. Are there any accounting records for DARE? Or is that another fund for Chief Crone?

Anonymous said...

It looks to me the town is giving $4,000 for THOUSANDS of "regular" kids versus $20,000 for a handful of "favorites" which include official's kids and such. Good going. Real fair. Sends a great message out to the kids. It's those few "favorites" who grow up into the future Crones and Erskine Smiths and Frank Raders and their supporters, thinking they can always expect more than everybody else and getting upset if anybody stands up to them and calls them on the carpet.

Let me assure you it not "only in Mooresville." It's also "was going on in Newton" and "went on in Little Washington."

You Mooresville people as ole Johnny about losing his credit card privileges in Newton.

Wise up. Dismiss and prosecute.

I can't believe they let him have all weekend to prep his "presentation." Spell that propaganda.

Anonymous said...

Let me assure you it's not "Cops for Crone." It's "Crone for Crone." Always has been, always will be. And I've known him since he came to NC.

Anonymous said...

Nah! My money is that Crone will take "The Fifth". And we all know what that means. It's looking more and more like a lose/lose situation for this shady character. We just gotta sit back and see who's been in on this with him. Good thing the media is on them like white on rice.

Has our new district attorney made any comments about this yet? Or for that matter, any outside law enforcement agencies involved yet?

I went back and pulled out my Tribune from last week when somebody called David Koster wrote in a letter called "Some People Don't Realize How Good We Have It Here." I guess if you're one of the ones who gets to go on trips with the police chief off of the charity dollars the rest of us give, you WOULD think this is a pretty cool place to live. Or maybe you have friends in "high places" who can throw you little favors here and there especially now that you've publicly kissed their behinds. Or maybe people like the town manager give business to you at inflated prices at the expense of the rest of us. Yea I guess this would be a great place to live if you are affiliated in any way with the people who have been sucking this town dry. The rest of us? We're just out here feeling the pinch - of your fangs.

Anonymous said...

Hey 5:28pm I have a soluton for you. If you dislike Mooresville so much MOVE!!!!!!!!!.Oh and by the way, the Town Managers job is open and the Mayor and Town councilman terms are expiring soon so apply or run for office. But I bet you are neither qualified for either position nor do you want to subject yourself to the public scutiny. So back to my original idea MOVE if you dislike Mooresville.

Anonymous said...

So, the police chief by the account in this report takes money from the evidence room and puts it into his personal "charity" and the solution of the 5:53 poster is for those who don't like it to move? Mooresville--love it as a corrupt town or leave it, right? Come on.

Anonymous said...

Hi Bill (is that the mayor?!) As long as there are people like you handfeeding and cheerleading the corruption in this town we are going to be breathing down all you all's necks. And if you don't like that you are free to move, too.

I once again have to ask why is time being waisted allowing Crone and Smith to come up wit all the answers they will need to come out smelling like a rose? Where is the S.B.I. where is the third party investigation? Come Monday night those who are new to the area are going to see the Good old Boy protection network in action.

Anonymous said...

The best thing about being honest is you don't have to worry about losing anything, especially your integrity. But when that is in conflict with greed, we have what we have in Mooresville.

Anonymous said...

OK, It's about doing the right thing.
Standing up for what is right and up against what is wrong. Thank You Ms. Gatton for standing up for all of us.

As for tomorrow, who will be standing? The Town Board can only direct the action of Mr. Smith or call for an investigation from authorities outside the realm of those involved. It will take a majority of the Town Board to initiate any action, or all of this too will cease to be anything more than a bad memory such as the library and golf scandals of the past. We will have learned nothing of integrity.

The Chief and Mr. Smith will be standing up in their own feeble defense.

It appears Commissioners Atkins and Herrring will be standing up for integrity.

What about the rest? Add one more commissioner and the Mayor can break another tie to sweep it under the rug, as it appears his silence prefers. Commissioners Abraham and Rader will opt to dismiss all this. Will Commissioner Carney stand up for restoring integrity in Mooresville- He ran on this in the past, but is silent now- or will Commissioner Houston aka "The Invisible Man" finally stand up and demand answers as to why the Cops for Kids charity supports trips for the priviledged instead of reaching out to the youth in his community that he represents?

Yes, It will be very interesting to watch who and how folks are standing up tomorrow night.

I want an officer of the MPD to answer a question for me. I want to know if Crone(or subordinates) has issued an order for any/all available officers to attend the Town Board meeting on Monday night because of possible unrest? The order, was it direct or implied? The reason I am asking is that there is nothing more that Crone wants than to have a "Sea of Blue" sitting in the back for this meeting. The intimidation factor is what he is counting on to retain power, and I hope it shows up. Why? The press can't be "intimidated" by the show of support/force, and pictures say a thousand words! I know alot of the MPD will attend, its called job security, but the police force is there to protect and serve the people of Mooresville, not Crone. I appeciate the police officers that serve for the right reasons, but if you are there to protect your job/because you owe Crone and not to protect the rights of the people of Mooresville, then you should write yourself a check from Crone's checkbook. I hope you think about that the next time you see a kid on the street or a senior who needs financial help. $$$$$$$$$$$$ is the reason for Crone's troubles, don't let it be your price tag to compromise the oath you swore. Thank you for your service and again I know a few bad apples don't spoil the bunch, but a rotten one on top sure makes the rest questionable.

The only way there will be officers is if they are ORDERED. They dont like to make appearences
when they are off duty. That time cuts into the time for their other jobs. Yes most work two jobs cause the pay for that job sucks. But at least the people of Mooresville
are safe at little cost.....
SO IF THERE ARE A LOT OF OFFICERS THERE IS BECAUSE THEY WERE FORCED TO BE THERE. BELIEVE ME THEY HAVE A LOT MORE THINGS TO BE CONDUCTING INSTEAD OF LISTENING TO THE MOORESVILLE LYNCH MOB RAISING MORTAL HELL.
They don,t like this situation as much as the tax payers because they are worried if they seen at the meeting (by order of the Chief) the people (taxpayers raising hell) will think they are just like CRONE. But they are only there because they were ordered.
We all know who will be leading the SAVE A DARE OFFICER CRUSADE. GOOD 'OL MATT.
WAY TO GO MATT. WAY TO SCREW THE WHOLE DEPARTMENT. WHEN THE LEADER LOOKS BAD IT MAKE PEOPLE THINK THE WHOLE DEPARTMENT IS BAD WHEN THEY ARE A GREAT BUNCH OF OFFICERS....
SORRY, MY FORMER FELLOW OFFICERS FOR THE HELL YOU ARE GOING TO BE GOING THROUGH.
LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER AND WATCH OUT FOR THE
BOHICA!!!!!

The twisted logic--I seem to remember Matt Burleyson was just fired, for parking his partol car in the wrong place and personal gain BS, so it has to be him that "narced" on the chief. Please! The public knows that the MPD is a great bunch of guys/gals, no question, and they appreciate it, but you yourself say " The leader looks bad" well lets ask why? The "leader" put the Department at risk by running Cops for Kids the way it was run, and got caught, no thanks to Matt Burleyson. The town knows alot more than what you think, but Matt Burleyson has to be the one who told because he was the last hatchet victim. I'm sorry the MPD has to go through the embarrassment of this episode, but Crone should have been happy being the chief and that's all, so blame the boss. The reason it is getting worse is Mr. Smith tried to save the ship instead of throwing off the rat, so blame him too. I'm sorry for Matt Burleyson for being blamed for something that was common knowledge to alot of officers. In the end, you don't kill the entire body because of infection, you find the infection and treat it, and let the body heal. I bet if Mr. Burleyson hadn't been targeted, he would still be there today, so place the blame where it belongs, at the top!

November 1, 2002 Friday 3RD

HEADLINE: Missing $4 prompts evidence room inquiry; Civilian employee who had access is suspended; SBI investigating

DATELINE: MOORESVILLE

Mooresville Police Chief John Crone suspended one employee and asked the SBI to investigate, after determining that $4 is missing from the department's evidence room.

Crone said officers told him late last week that money from the evidence room may have been mishandled.

Last Friday, he determined that $4 is missing and suspended without pay a civilian employee who has access to the room. He did not name the employee. On Monday, he asked the SBI to investigate. "There is potential criminal conduct involved," he said. Crone would not explain what he thinks happened to the money or say whether he thinks more than $4 is involved. He said it is routine to ask another agency to investigate anytime a police employee is suspected of wrongdoing.

It would be inappropriate for him to say much about the SBI's investigation, he said. Crone expects the investigation will take a week or two. SBI officials could not immediately be reached but typically do not comment on ong4oing investigations.

Copyright 2002 Charlotte Observer, The Charlotte Observer

This happened when $4 was missing from the evidence room. Why is Crone not suspended? There have been many officers at MPD suspended for far less but yet Crone can spend the week-end cleaning up the "mess".

Dont stop with Crone. Look at Chief Greene. Chief Greene is going to bankrupt the town of Mooresville. He wants the town to have a fire rating of 2. Ask your insurance agent what a 2 does for you. A fire rating of 2 only helps business rates but by very little. Our millions spent over the past couple of years on fire department upgrades probably saved a couple thousand dollars in insurance premiums. The Town Board cannot say no to either the Chief of Police or the Fire Chief.

This does give us a chance to get rid of Crone though, but Erskine Smith wont do it.

You are right if they would not have fired Matt, he would still be employed. Guess what this whole COPS for KIDS thing would not even be an issue. If people (lets say Matt) knew about his a long time ago why did not do anything about it. That makes him just as guilty. It is funny this just comes out right after he left.
HELL at least you guys are not complaining about the crime rate. Good to know the taxpayers sleep good at night.

THERE IS IN FACT A LINK BETWEEN MATT AND JAMIE..... MOST OF YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS BUT THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T, HERE WE GO.
MATT'S WIFE SELLS HOME DECOR OR TUPPERWARE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT WITH ATKINS' WIFE (ATKINS IS ONE OF THE COMMISSIONERS). ATKINS LIVES BESIDE JAMIE. THIS IS HOW IT WENT. MATT GOT FIRED, CRIED WITH HIS WIFE,HIS WIFE WENT TO HER FRIEND (ATKINS'S WIFE) TELLING HER WHAT MATT HAD TOLD HER. MRS. ADKINS TELLS MR.ADKINS ALL THE GOOD STUFF.MR ADKINS IS FEEDING JAMIE INFO FROM MATT OR MATT'S WIFE.
SEE HOW EASY THAT WAS. MR. ADKINS
WE ALL KNOW YOU DON'T LIKE THE CHIEF.SO YOU WERE FEED INFO FROM MATT OR HIS WIFE, DID NOT KNOW WHAT DO WITH IT, SO YOU WENT TO YOUR NEIGHBOR, JAMIE WITH THE INFO.
THIS IS HOW ALL THIS STARTED.
MY MY GOOD OL BACK DOOR POLITICS.
WAY TO GO TEAM SCREW THE CHIEF AND POLICE DEPARTMENT. THIS BUD IS FOR YOU!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

So what. A "link". And I guess they conspired to create the documents. No actually, what happened is somebody who gave a damn and how has more guts than anybody who is posting here, a lady named Jaime Gatton, simply exercised her right as an American and asked to see the records. Sad thing is, the records revealed what has been reported. If the records didn't reveal what they revealed, there would be no story.

Anonymous said...

NO WHAT IS SAD THAT MATT CRIED TO JAMIE THROUGH CHANNELS AFTER HE LOST HIS JOB. JAMIE GOT HER INFO FROM HIM. IT IS CLEAR.. MATT"S "FRIENDS FOR FIRED COPS" BROUGHT THIS TO LIGHT.
IF MATT WAS STILL AT THE PD THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A STORY AND THE TAXPAYERS WOULD BE IN THE DARK .
MATT NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT THE COPS FOR KIDS MONEY THAT PAID FOR THE DARE PROGRAM FOR ALL KIDS NOT JUST POOR OR NEEDY KIDS, THE BIKE HE GAVE AWAY FOR THE BEST DARE ESSAY, THE DARE SHIRTS, THE PIZZA PARTIES, AND TROPHIES FOR THE DARE PROGRAM.
WHEN HE LOST HIS JOB HE CRIED.....
NOW THE PEOPLE KNOW.
IF HE WAS STILL SPENDING THE COPS FOR KIDS MONEY, HE WOULD NOT HAVE CRIED TO JAMIE. JAMIE WOULD NOT HAVE A STORY BECAUSE SHE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD A SOURCE.
THAT WAS POINT

So, I'm still rubbing my hands together in anticipation of this "presentation" Crone was supposedly working on this weekend when he was rummaging through CFK records. I guess I'll have to wait a while longer. Showed up at the meeting last night, sat right next to about five television crews, all of us eager beavers. But it seems Mr. Crone had a change of heart. The old switch-aroo. Works every time. Neat trick Crone. I guess the big question now is just what were you doing with those files this weekend? And how DO you keep all these stories straight? Oh, I forgot. My tax dollars bought you a nice blackberry that you can use to keep them all straight.

Anonymous said...

You'll be rubbing your hands together for a long time. There's no "presentation", never was, never will be. You guessed right. You've been had. Crone got to creep into his office and clean up the Cops 4 Kids financials right under our noses under the guise of preparing a presentation for us to see what he's been doing with the money. Real stand-up guy, just the kind of guy I want running the police department.
