Sorry, but I smell a RAT. Can't figure out who's up to what, but I can tell somebody is up to no good, and I can take a pretty good guess who it could be. Looks like the Usual Suspects may be playing a big game.

Also, we can all now safely deduct that we must be ready to pay some big bucks to the new town manager, whoever it may be. At least $190,000 right? So, if we keep Mr. Dead Weight Smith, we'll be paying close to $300,000 a year to manage a town the size of ours? What is up with that? Talk about "how many managers does it take to screw in a lightbulb". Ridiculous.

How can Mooresville's town manager get that much money? The County Manager, who takes care of more people, only gets $161,128.39.

This is a continuation of the "Count Up Vigil" of the number of days which pass from the day Cops For Kids scandal broke (7/4/08) to the day that Police Chief Crone and Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith are both suspended, terminated or resign.

The Police Chief was suspended (with pay) on Tuesday, 7/8/08. The community clearly continues to be relieved and deeply grateful to whatever forces brought that timely suspension about. However, serious questions are now mounting with regard to Mr. Smith's decision to continue paying Mr. Crone a salary.

Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith, Mr. Crone’s supervisor, remains in his position and continues to operate still. Therefore I shall continue this Vigil until he, too, vacates any post he holds as a public official in Mooresville due to his role in this matter as well as other matters that have been brought to light.

The town board has placed Finance Director Maia Setzer in charge of oversight of the CFK process (including but not limited to any investigations) which indicates that they, too, lack confidence and trust in the Interim Town Manager. Despite this lack of confidence, Mr. Smith remains in his position, a position to which the Finance Director reports.

The information I specifically refer to is:

1) documented misrepresentations made by Mr. Smith with regard to the nonprofit corporation known as Cops For Kids

2) Mr. Smith's direct recommendation to the town board to include the nonprofit corporation known as Cops For Kids into the town's general budget

3) Mr. Smith's failure to perform due diligence in his capacity as Interim Town Manager by properly researching Cops For Kids prior to submitting his recommendation to the town board

4) Mr. Smith's involvement in a questionable commission in the amount of $237,151.50 as outlined in the Gatton Report blog entry dated 4/18/08 and titled “Friends don’t let friends gouge Mooresville taxpayers”, the contents of which have never been publicly disputed by Mr. Smith

5) Mr. Smith’s failure or refusal to change Mr. Crone’s status to “unpaid” suspension despite the surfacing of various contradictory statements made by Mr. Crone in the media since his suspension

This is Day No. 14.

I don't mind the next manager getting good money AS LONG AS HE (OR SHE) IS HIGHLY QUALIFIED. What I mind is the $100,000 or so we are wasting on Erskin Smith. It seems everytime there's been a scandal, his name has been involved. This has gone on for years and years and years. It's time to cut the man loose and get with the program!

While we're on the subject of Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith, can somebody please tell me what all the important-looking initials he puts after his name on his e-mails mean? Here's a cut & paste:

Erskine Smith, ICMA-CM, AICP

I don't think we should even get started on that. But, I bet some folks can come up with some good ones.

This is a continuation of the "Ink Pen Gate Vigil" of the number of days which pass from the day the ink pen was stolen (7/16/08) to the day that Police Chief Crone and Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith are both suspended, terminated or resign.

The ink pen was stolen on Wednesday, 7/16/08. The community clearly wants to find out what has happened to the taxpayers ink pen. However, serious questions are now mounting with regard to Mr. Smith's decision to not call in the SBI, FBI and National Guard.

Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith, the keeper of all ink pens, remains in his position and continues to operate still. Therefore I shall continue this Vigil until he, too, vacates any post he holds as a public official in Mooresville due to his role in this matter as well as other matters that have been brought to light.

The town board has placed Helen Keller in charge of oversight of the ink pen location process (including but not limited to any investigations) which indicates that they, too, lack confidence and trust in the Interim Town Manager. Despite this lack of confidence, Mr. Smith remains in his position, a position to which Helen Keller reports.

The information I specifically refer to is:

1) documented misrepresentations made by Mr. Smith with regard to the missing ink pen.

2) Mr. Smith's direct recommendation to the town board that he chews on ink pens sometimes.

3) Mr. Smith's failure to perform due diligence in his capacity as Interim Town Manager by properly researching and hunting down the dirty rat that stole the ink pen.

4) Mr. Smith's involvement in a questionable commission in the amount of $0.32 as outlined in the Gatton Report blog entry dated 4/18/08 and titled “Friends don’t let friends steal taxpayers ink pens”, the contents of which have never been publicly disputed by Mr. Smith

5) Mr. Smith’s failure or refusal to change all the locks on the doors, filing cabinets and storage bins.

This is Day No. 3.

We have a name for people who compare taking a pen from work to stealing from charities meant for children and the elderly. The word is "Sociopath".

The big problem, of course, with sociopaths, is that they often assimilate nicely into society and look and act fairly normal. They even hold elected office, run successful businesses, even head up police departments. You can pass one on the street and say hello to them and think they're a pretty nice guy.

on Thursday, July 17th,said ink pen(aka Bic) was seen cruising down hwy. 115 south cavorting with a black Cross pen sporting gold trim. Is that you Tat? Well, Crones all yours, no one seems to care, they all vanished. But I do hope someone cares some day. Just dont let him come to my town. Wherever I go.

According to WSOC on July 7: “Crone admits he hasn’t done a great job of record keeping but adamantly denies any wrongdoing.” The same news station reported on July 8 that, “Crone admitted he’s bad at record keeping.”

I mean, come on, who would fire a police chief just because he's a bad record keeper. Oh, wait, isn't that what being a police chief is all about--keeping good records?

A six hundred dollar camera??? for the cop shop break room, did they steal 1200 50 cent sodas. Did anyone tell him a 20 dollar camera from wall mart would have done the same thing esp. if it does not record. And why was the dispatcher (or whatever) the one charged with policing the camera. Crone did not even trust his own cops to protect the break room, but we are to trust them to protect us. Unbelievable

Hey cops, you should get at least a free soda for getting shot at for me!

Has anyone considered the fact that since this was not a charity and was in Crones personal name and technically his personal business that the time he spent on it "on the clock) was stealing from the taxpayers?

If you read the Limitations and Restrictions which are included with the articles of incorporation, you'll notice that the first line says: "No part of the net earnings of the Corporation shall inure to the benefit of any member, Director, officer of the Corporation, or any private individual ..."

Seems that the net profits benefitted the Director as well as private individuals.

Anonymous said...

But the articles of incorporation and EIN should not matter, because the original non incorporated (under Crones SSN and the "new" incorporated(under EIN) cops for kids were never merged so the incorporated non profit has nothing to do with the john crone cops for kids for profit. THey are 2 seperate and distinct entities and unless they are merged, mean nothing to one another. Or to the case against Crone.

Crone said that as far as he new, it was not a non profit even though his set up the non profit, he never used it like he should have.

Or am I missing something?

After further investigation I have decided that I am unable to post crimes on Monday as the Federal Statutes I would have been citing will involve more then 7 members of the police department and as many as 2 members of the town council. If I were to post the crimes and reasons why, I believe they committed it, it could quite possibly “interfere” with a federal investigation making me violate the law which I will not allow to happen.

The only thing I will be able to do is to tell the title of the statute I believe was violated and I see no reason to wait to monday, anything further is not the right thing for me to do as I will not hamper, impede or pervert the course of justice. Also, as I am not an expert on those laws it would only be my “belief” that the Act was violated and cause the 9+ people involved to have a difficult time in getting a “fair Trial”

I believe I have done my part for now and it is time for me to allow the investigation to move forward.

But make no mistake I believe these people violated the Federal R.I.C.O (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) Act and all should go to prison. I will continue posting crimes that Crone has committed that I believe I can prove until he is arrested and all of his assets seized and returned to the town.

To the FBI, the ball is in your court, and my offer still stands. Good luck.

This is how a case like this is supposed to happen.

HOUSTON – Two HPD cops were indicted Thursday for stealing from the Houston Police Officer’s Union.
A grand jury issued the ruling Thursday against Ronny Martin and Jeff Larson. Both served as top officials for the organization.
“The defendants are accused of engaging in a criminal scheme that misappropriated cash, checks credit cards and vehicles totaling more than $100,000 from the HPOU organization and board of directors,” said Harris County D.A. Kenneth Magidson.
Martin is a former HPD officer who served as the union’s secretary.
Larson was the union’s treasurer.
“There were some inappropriate credit card expenses and there were some checks that we believe were cashed that were made out to the union. What they were using the money for, I don’t know,” said Gary Blankinship. He’s the HPOU president.
The HPOU says an audit revealed that, during a one 19-month period, the two officers were taking rent checks from a tenant in the union’s building and cashing them at the police officer’s credit union for themselves.
“When you place people in positions of trust with your member’s money and they violate that trust, it’s not only embarrassing, it personally makes me mad. It makes every member of the bored mad,” said Blankinship.
Both officers were relieved of duty in March.
Martin has since retired.
The men, officials say, are familiar faces around the union and around City Hall.
They were both very active in union politics, but now some of their fellow officers are expressing surprise and anger about the allegations.

As for town manager search:

Deductive Logic 101

IF, despite all odds, Erskine Smith is even a remote "contender" in the town manager search,

THEN, every member of the Selection Committee must be named and removed from office at the next available opportunity.

AND

BECAUSE Smith is privvy to information and has easy physical access to information contained in Town Hall

THEN would it be difficult to believe that he would have the ability to and have much to gain by sabotaging other candidates for the town manager position?

THEREFORE if more candidates mysteriously are taken out of the running, THEN we can with a high probability speculate who is behind the mystery.

Sheep are people who would still support a police chief after being informed that there is a deposit slip in his poorly kept records that shows "loose change from evidence room" being deposited into a personal bank account solely controlled by the same chief. If they don't believe the document exists, they should walk down to town hall and get a copy.

I don't believe Jaimie is trying to be anything other than a courageous journalist. She has done what most, including myself, have failed to do- go public- loud and proud.
Some of you newcomers, while I welcome you into the community, don't have much of an idea of what it's been like here for the last 50 years or so. If I am called a "follower"( if you knew my identity you'd know thst isn't true!) it is simply because I have learned the hard way not to upset the apple cart. Now we have those here who don't give a flip about the apple cart or the horse it rode in on! They just want justice. We, while we are apprehensive, are cheering you on from the shadows because we don't feel safe enough to come from behind them yet. We are thankful for your courage. I don't care to be arrested for nothing while going to the grocery store minding my own business. I don't think 98% of our force would do that, but there's the 2 % that worry me. The spectors of the henchmen still haunt our memories- and our memories are long as well to those who threaten from secrecy.
Whether we want to believe it or not, there ARE clusters fo individuals who bend the law in high places, supported by those in auxillary positions who enable them. It's a fact. Now, once again, we're waiting to see if true justice will prevail this time or will the usual line-up of criminals from the state level on down see to it that the people in question aren't even thoroughly investigated, just set free to have free reign once again. We are watching and waiting. There is an election coming. Two of these such people have been voted off in the past. Two more of you are in our political crosshairs. We aren't going to take this anymore.

Thanks to those honest officers and public servants who are working so hard everyday. We love and appreciate you so much. Thank you .

Thank you, stay hidden if you must, but I promise you, these people are going down, I will not allow this to happen anymore, there is nothing they can do to me, at least nothing they have not already done in the past. I know what your town is like from experience, however, right now an innocent man is in prison and a guilty man is free to roam the streets with a pistol and badge. He is done and so are any officers who took money, I will see to it, I promise.

Do not put yourself in jepordy, you are correct that they will arrest you and ruin your life just for fun. THey have been doing it everywhere for a long time. When I am done, you can take over but make no mistake, I am no where near done.

Every officer who took money is going to prison, that is a promise and they only have the chief to thank for that. The people of Mooresville will be free once again, and when I am done in your town, trust me, there is another I have been working on for years. Crone opened the door for me, he just did not know where that door will lead, only I do.

People should not have their lives ruined by the scum of the earth with a badge for spitting on the sidewalk, it should be the other way around. But now the so called scum of the earth is coming back with a vengence that they can not possibly fathom. And with righteousness of "JUST" laws that they do not understand.

They will find me someday and when they do, I will be going to prison, but not before I take them ALL with me.

Think what you want about me in the future but you have no idea what this is costing me, but you will soon.

The United States Constitution will be protected at all costs by me and anyone that does not like it can pack there bags and get out or face going under my microscope. And that is something no one is prepared for.

I am not a vigilante and I dont condone violence in any form other then self defense, however the law says arms may be taken up whenever there is a usurpation of the power from the people and the Constitution, I much prefer law books. These days "everything" is illegal, I have had enough.

Also, let it be know that if anyone uses this time to attack or otherwise go after ANY member of law enforcement, I will stop what I am doing and focus my full attention on them. Protect the officers now, they have been protecting you. They are not all guilty and the courts will decide who is and who is not, not you.

We need to cast a very wide net for our next town manager. Cary was too close. We need a national search not a statewide search. Jamie Justice' hiring taught us that. We cannot rush this decision and we cannot act out of fear. This is going to be one of the most important decisions our elected officials make during their tenure. This decision cannot become tainted in any way.

In Living Color was a great show. But corruption isn't funny. Your police chief is entering the third full week of his suspension. Other officers have been suspended without pay and fired for much, much less than what has already been proven in this case. You might not like Tic Toc's style, but you know his basic point is right. Perhaps you should join him in simply asking for equal justice under the law. Nothing more, nothing less.

All of you do realize that the Mooresville Tribune is the reason the guy from Cary backed out dont you?

Anonymous said...

No actually I don't know that. And unlike you some of us out here are no fools. We all know why the guy from Cary backed out. Because a certain loser is waiting in the wings and he can do all kinds of fun little things to sabotage the town manager search. His name? Erskine Smith, and he's running (yep, that's right), running your town right now (kinda like when you run the numbers). We call him the Lady In Waiting. He thinks he's going to sail into the new job, get a fat pay raise and we'll all let him live happily ever after. Not.

Anonymous said...

10:13 - Your post shows exactly how much you are blinded by ignorance and hate. The Mooresville Tribune should have never leaked the guys name. Dale Gowing is so caught up in trying to look like a real editor that he crossed lines that hurt the town. Why are all of you not raising hell about that? Now the search will start all over again, costing more tax dollars that you all like to whine about so much, but instead of getting mad at the real culprit (Dale Gowing and the Tribune) you keep acting like everything is a huge conspiracy. Keep believing all the one sided stories you get from this blog and keep sipping on that Kool Aid and one day you will realize that you were the fool all along.

Anonymous said...

Look who's telling ME I'm "filled with hate". Your hatred of Dale Gowing is oozing out of you. At least I choose to "hate" corruption and the corrupt in the government. You choose to hate the free press. Two guesses where you've been getting your meal ticket from. What's the matter? Your wallet got lighter since all the exposure started? Had to close down your little money laundering business? Welcome to our world. People like you and your husband (yep, we know who you are, Koolaid lady) have been taking out of our wallets for years. The party's over. I rest my case.

Anonymous said...

You made my point for me. When you are face to face with both sides of the story, you realize how idiotic your little conspiracy theories are.

Anonymous said...

All this talk about Koolaid is making me thirsty. That got me wondering.....I wonder how many totties were paid for by Cops 4 Kids money for the chaperones. Guess we'll never know thanks to bad recordkeeping.

Anonymous said...

9:29 & 11:05.... Your logic is faulty. No need to start the search again, we have another finalist, so by default the choice is made. If that individual declines, then we either have an issue with our search firm and interview process, or some truth in the statement that the candidates smell a bad deal with this town.

Or, is this all a ruse? Why did we pay for a head hunter to chase a candidate that turned us down once, and then pay for them to try again a second time with a candidate that is obviously financially out of our league? Either the town is wasting our time and money (again) on individuals we can not afford, or they are preparing to offer the new manager a comparable salary that has not been disclosed.

... and why would that be, seems if that is what the mkt demands and we need to pay that for the right person our town management would be open about it and I would support it, and happy to be getting the best the town can afford, providing they had the salary data to back it up and not Rader math.

If we are not offering a comparable salary, then what could the town offer a man and family that would justify packing up, uprooting all their lives and moving to a town less than 1/3rd the size and 15 years behind, not to mention giving up $50,000 or more in income?

...or, are they stacking the deck to ensure they get who they wanted in the first place, and the whole search process is a sham and an additional abuse of public funds?

The paper did what a newspaper should do; inform the public, break the story, they are not inclined nor should be worried about how the truth affects the town, we need more transparency and truth here, not less. Cary’s Manager didn't turn us down due to the article, if we were serious and he was too, he would decline to comment and take the job, either way, he may still, but I doubt a man would go on the record as saying no and then accept it. That would make his credibility level 0. If he does take the job, then we are off on the wrong foot and if it’s for less than $175,000, one will wonder what incentives and promises were made....

Any qualified candidate would never consider coming to work for Rader, Abraham and the other jokes on the commission.

But we have the Big Four, our new hope for a good future in Mooresville. Houston, Herring, Atkins and Carney have shown me something. I would absolutely come and work for them if I were a highly qualified town manager. They outnumber the bad guys on the board.

Anonymous said...

Well, they may "outnumber the Bad Guys", but the RATS are playing by a different set of rules than your "Big Four". The RATS scheme, lie, cheat and then constantly remind the "Big Four" of the "rules". They tie the "Big Four"'s hands while their own hands are free to do whatever they please. So don't get too happy yet...Until the "Big Four" wake up to the reality of how they're constantly being played by the RATS, nothing's gonna change.
