Protest to be held tomorrow

“Every man of humane convictions must decide on the protest that best suits his convictions, but we must all protest.”
~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dozens of concerned citizens are expected to converge on Main Street in Mooresville tomorrow for a peaceful, unified protest against the local government’s handling of Police Chief John Crone and his Cops for Kids program.

Crone has been suspended with pay since July 8.

The coalition of various community activist groups plans to participate in Monday’s demonstration, which - as far as anyone can tell - will go down in Mooresville’s history books as the first-ever march on Town Hall. The demonstrators plan to rally in the Moore Room of the Citizens Center from 3-5 p.m. then march to Town Hall, where the board of commissioners meets at 6 p.m.

What’s the purpose of the protest?

“We who engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive.”
~Martin Luther King, Jr.

“It is unacceptable that certain people in this community apparently operate outside of the law with full immunity,” wrote a recent Report commenter. “There cannot be two sets of rules, laws and standards. Wherever such double standard exists, corruption breeds and thrives.”

Rev. Larry Green, who organized Monday’s protest, said: “As citizens, we have witnessed an assortment of actions and decisions which have brought us to this point. Despite repeated requests for explanations and actions, along with repeated attempts to communicate with the town leadership, we have arrived at a moment in time where we are compelled to exercise our duties as citizens to police the government, to redress our grievances, to instruct our elected officials; all of which are the rights of citizens as outlined in the state's bill of rights.”

Green said he hopes the event provides “a public forum in which we, as a people, can force our collective voices and ideas to be heard.

“Mooresville is a great community, as a whole, and we want to make it even better,” he said. “The only way to do that at this point is to unite into one common voice in order to visually represent our outrage at what has been allowed to happen.

“All taxpayers and voters have a right to expect equal representation and equal protection from the government,” Green concluded. “We have a right to expect ethical practices, legal activities, and responsible government. Within the past few weeks we have seen none of those. Instead we receive interference by elected officials, failure to equally enact personnel policies by the interim Town Manager, and a total failure by our elected officials to demand responsibility.”

Another Report reader said the purpose of Monday’s protest is “to demonstrate to the town board that the citizens of Mooresville demand accountability from public officials; to express unhappiness with the actions of Erskine Smith … not suspending Crone without pay or firing him … and Frank Rader … abusing his office by encouraging police officers to write letters of support for Crone, their suspended boss; to demonstrate the lack of public trust in town government because of the manner in which this situation has been handled.

“That’s it, as I see it: accountability and lack of public trust,” the commenter continued. “We need accountability to restore public trust. We’re protesting the absence of both in town government.”

Yet another poster said: “We need to demand change and we need to demand it now.”

Citing the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, another commenter stated: “The right to peaceable assembly provides the opportunity for all citizens, whether they are employed by the federal or state government, by private businesses, or by a non-profit organization, to participate in America’s political life and in the electoral process.”

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
~Mahatma Gandhi

But when citizens choose to exercise their Constitutional right to assemble and voice grievances against the government, it doesn’t always sit well with others, as evidenced by one recent Report commenter who stated, “If you stupid sheep think you’re gonna actually do something your (sic) crazy! It’ll be the day when this bunch of mealy-mouthed dummies actually speak up.”

And then, about a week later, this comment was posted: “I bet the only people that show up Monday will be the less than 20 people that make up this idiot blog. Your (sic) not the majority. If you think you are show it in the polls.”

But “turn out is not the issue,” say some protestors who plan to attend tomorrow’s demonstration.

“This is not a situation that should require the effort of a mass protest nor should the number of people in attendance have any bearing on the government's simple obligations to deal with clear violations of law and policy,” one commenter wrote.

Another commenter told potential protestors not to be disdainful of small beginnings: “Whether two people show up or twenty at the appointed time and day, you have begun something.”

Added Green: “Our movement will not be deterred, despite the desires of a few to maintain the ‘image’ of Mooresville. The image is tarnished already, and we need to polish it up and give it new and fresh appearance.”

You'll see me tomorrow!!

I thank God daily for Ms. Gatton and her investigative reporting. And I thank God for the people who have organized this long overdue march on our Town Hall. I will be there, and I will be there with all of my children. “Children do not do what we say, they do what we do.” I want my children to see me actually stand up for what I believe in – open, honest, accountable government.

Here's my favorite part of this article:

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”

Anonymous said...

I'm unable to be there to march tomorrow but I support what you're doing. I strongly encourage people to sign up to speak at the meeting. The level of disgust in the audience last month was quickly swept under the rug when only 2 people signed up to speak....let them hear you folks!

King Thunberg loves his pomp and circumstance, so don't be surprised if he tries to gavel you all down and throw all kinds of fake rules at you to keep you quiet. He hates, and I mean hates the idea of what you're doing, and he'd love to see a couple of you arrested and thrown in jail.

Anonymous said...

I wonder will King Thunberg be as obnoxiously "all powerful and all controlling" in front of a packed house and some tv cameras?

Anonymous said...

Tomorrow, we march for justice.

Anonymous said...

Let Thunburg hit his silly little gavel and have us arrested for ignoring him and choosing instead to continue to exercise our freedom of speech, whether it be by speech or by signs. I've got my lawyer on speed dial, and I've instructed him to NOT BAIL ME OUT, but instead to call every media outlet and judicial agency in the region to let them know that in Mooresville you can scam and defraud the public and walk around free, if you're a police chief, but you WILL be arrested if you're a regular citizen protesting the corrupt police chief and his boss, the acting town manager. Bring it on "Honorable" Mayor Thunburg.

This is a continuation of the "Count Up Vigil" of the number of days which pass from the day Cops For Kids scandal broke (7/4/08) to the day that Police Chief Crone and Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith are both suspended, terminated or resign.

The Police Chief was suspended (with pay) on Tuesday, 7/8/08. The community clearly continues to be relieved and deeply grateful to whatever forces brought that timely suspension about. However, serious questions continue to mount with regard to Mr. Smith's decision to continue paying Mr. Crone a salary.

Interim Town Manager Erskine Smith, Mr. Crone’s supervisor, remains in his position and continues to operate still. Therefore I shall continue this Vigil until he, too, vacates any post he holds as a public official in Mooresville due to his role in this matter as well as other matters that have been brought to light.

The town board has placed Finance Director Maia Setzer in charge of oversight of the CFK process (including but not limited to any investigations) which indicates that they, too, lack confidence and trust in the Interim Town Manager. Despite this lack of confidence, Mr. Smith remains in his position, a position to which the Finance Director reports.

The information I specifically refer to is:

1) documented misrepresentations made by Mr. Smith with regard to the nonprofit corporation known as Cops For Kids

2) Mr. Smith's direct recommendation to the town board to include the nonprofit corporation known as Cops For Kids into the town's general budget

3) Mr. Smith's failure to perform due diligence in his capacity as Interim Town Manager by properly researching Cops For Kids prior to submitting his recommendation to the town board

4) Mr. Smith's involvement in a questionable commission in the amount of $237,151.50 as outlined in the Gatton Report blog entry dated 4/18/08 and titled “Friends don’t let friends gouge Mooresville taxpayers”, the contents of which have never been publicly disputed by Mr. Smith

5) Mr. Smith’s failure or refusal to change Mr. Crone’s status to “unpaid” suspension despite the surfacing of various contradictory statements made by Mr. Crone in the media since his suspension

6) Mr. Smith’s failure or refusal to fire Mr. Crone despite his assumed knowledge of the damning evidence presented in this report

7) Mr. Smith’s failure or refusal to insure that a complete financial audit is conducted and released of Cops For Kids records, despite the mayor’s assurance that this process had begun on July 8

This is Day No. 30.

Many of us have been raised not to air our "dirty laundry". We 've been told to keep up appearances and just not let the truth come out. That thinking has been carried over into politics here in Mooresville.
While I do not pretend to be even close to perfect, I think responsibility and a quicker response would have prevented it from coming to this. I am not called to be anyone's judge but my own. There is only One who has that right.
There is nothing wrong with supporting each other's causes in the spirit of goodwill and charity, but there is something wrong with secretiveness, devise planning and exclusion of the will of the majority.
This is a very special community with hard-working friends and neighbors who will help when times are hard. Let's give each other the courtesy of sharing what's on our hearts and finding a solution together. We have the right to be included in decisions about our future, not have it decided for us by a small group depending on each ohter alone for feedback. Let us back in our government. We pay your salaries. We provide the tax base this town operates with.
We do not want privilege for a handful and we expect that the punishment fit the crime- not a double standard for an insider.

The time to act is now fellow citizens. The time is August 4th, 2008. Meeting 3-5pm in the Moore Room of the Citizen's Center. March/Protest from 5-7pm with a police escort. Take that step to be part of history and help make Mooresville an even better place to live. How are you going to use your voice?

Anonymous said...

Godspeed to this effort! It is amazing to think that this will be the first protest march in Mooresville protesting local governance? It should have never come to this. There is a leadership vacuum here. Nobody willing to do the hard thing. In this case it's firing the police chief and the town manager both. And that would be without pay, in case I'm not being clear!

Anonymous said...

You have every right to march. I hope you have a great turn out. But what I really wish is a better and continually better turn out at the polls. When I ran for mayor only 2423 voted. Mayor Thunberg beat me, an unknown by 293 votes. Things could have and would have been different. Your true voice is at the polls. Don't be lazy next time and here after. GET OUT AND VOTE!

Anonymous said...

As to voting and marching, it's not either/or. We can do both!

Hope to see you there today, Larry.

Anonymous said...

how many people are we expecting to turn out?

Anonymous said...

I've heard reports of 50.

Anonymous said...

Watch out for the RATS (Rader, Abraham, Thunberg & Smith) tonight. I heard that they're going to try and pull tricks out of their hats tonight. One trick is they're trying to get their "shadow" friends to show up and sign up to complain about this & that so that the public speaking time runs out. They think if they're complaining, nobody will accuse the RATS of a set-up. What, of course, they didn't count on is that this community is now full of ears and eyes. Nothing's gonna get past many of us, and as soon as we find something out, you will, too!

Successful?!?!?!?!? There were like 20 of you out there. HAHAHA! I didnt think some of you could do it but you became even bigger laughing stocks!!

Anonymous said...

There were more than 20, but even that would have been a nice turnout for any town-related business to let your representatives know your thinking on matters.

Protesters young and old marched in severe heat. They should be commended for their passion whether one agrees with their position or not.

I looked for signs supporting the targets of this protest. I waited to hear from supporters during public comment.

I saw neither. If you were there, why did you not speak up?

I always like to hear both sides.

I drove by a little after 5:00 on my way to home and soccer with the kids, but had a chnace to slow down and watch for a minute and give a supporting beep and thumbs up. I also was impresseed. Very peaceful and organized looking demomstration. I saw several dozen, I estimated to my wife 50 as well. For something that was word of mouth and done in a week, well done! By the way 50 is 10% of Abrahams total votes last election, and nearly 4% of rader and the mayor...imagine how that can snow ball, the absolute vote count differencial for these men is very small, it wont take much to swing it away from them. Anyone back yet with how the meeting went.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the pictures. Even though I applaud all citizens for taking a stance against any issues that they feel is unjust, I have to agree with the above post putting the number at around twenty. This includes children, who are just parroting their parent's feelings. However, thanks go out to these citizens for taking an interest in their community.

Anonymous said...

well done folks

Anonymous said...

The blogger above with the take back your town address has written their account of the meeting. I left near the end of the gross receipts tax issue. It may well be the meeting is still ongoing. I would like to have returned for the end of the meeting and any comments from the board members but am nursing a very bad cold.

I was impressed with the turnout and the civility except for when those in the audience were clapping at the end of someone's remarks and were called down for it. I know decorum must be maintained but I did not know you weren't allowed to clap in support of a statement.

Or laugh. You just had to laugh at the comment about the gym memberships and whether they were being used.

Anonymous said...

Other people standing with me counted and were up to 30-some. Twenty including children is a gross underestimate.

Yes, there were a few children there. I didn't count babies or toddlers but, as this was a COPS FOR KIDS issue, I believe young people count and they were making that statement.

Anonymous said...

I didnt know we were counting the small children that were dragged out there by their parents. Lets do some math......25 Protestors...21300 citizens....that works out to about .1% of the citizens. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Anonymous said...

They looked like a bunch of Klansmen from the Jerry Springer show. And I am sure they are being spoonfed hog slop from someone we all know well who has tried to influence politics in this town for years.

the start of a new day in mooresville nc

Anonymous said...

Yep.....the 25 of you really showed them.

Anonymous said...

OK....let's put the slide rules away and leave the big time "Sy-pherin'" (calculating) for Rader since this is his professed area of expertise.

I've been to a LOT of town hall meetings over the past few years including when they raised our taxes AGAIN 2 months ago. There was less than a dozen people at that one. I've NEVER seen as many people there as there were tonight...that's un-refutable. Standing Room Only just plain does NOT HAPPEN in this town at a board meeting. Weiner dog raises, yes, board meetings, no.

If you have a gripe against the protesters I believe the Constitution protects your free speech rights as well. See you next month.

I am sure Cliff Homesley paid for the signs and financed the whole show. His puppets finally come out of the anonymous woodwork. Wonder if Cliff filed with the Elections Board as a Political Action Committee. Maybe that should be investigated. If Cliff cant get his people to win elections he resorts to mob action.

Hard not to notice the Mooresville Freak Show.

Anonymous said...

Over 50 people marched, not including infants. At least 15 to 20 others joined us at town hall in this protest. You with the freak show comment, tell us exactly what you mean--do you mean a mix of young and old, rich and poor, black and white, conservative and liberal--well, then, yes, I guess it was a freak show. So, I guess America is a freak show. Welcome to the show. By the way, what exactly do you stand for?

Anonymous said...

Was Thumb Tack out there at the Freak Show? Or was he back on house arrest? If he was I guarantee you I can pick him out of those pictures.

Anonymous said...

LOL....you had 30 people there and 10 of those were younger than 14.

Anonymous said...

I bet at least 10 of the adults were felonious criminals who were mad the Mooresville Police arrested them at some point.

Good to have the usual suspects on camera and identified every once in a while. Thank you for posting the pictures.

Anonymous said...

And what is your answer to whether or not it is okay for a police chief to remove "loose change" from an evidence room and put it in his bank account? How do you defend numerous cash withdrawals from that account? You laugh at the people who are standing up for a just society. Just what do you stand for? You don't stand for anything other than cronyism and you can't stand people who stand simply on principle. You would be running down this protest if there were 5 people, 10 people, 100 people or 1000. In this day and age for 50-60 people to go out in 98 degree heat and demand justice, you just got your wake up call but you keep hitting the snooze button.

Anonymous said...

Too bad you weren't there to see these people and hear these people speak. They represent civil citizens much better than some of the posters' comments on this board.

They addressed the board with civility and were well behaved.

Why does that behavior scare you so much?

Anonymous said...

Name the felons by name, if you are going to start making those claims. And give your name if you are so damn sure to make that kind of accusation.

Anonymous said...

Check out News 14 for Frank Rader's comment: noboby has even been "charged" and something about learning in 8th grade about innocent until proven guilty. He still doesn't get it: his standard for firing Crone would be only if he is charged with a crime. Surely, surely a town commissioner has a higher standard for his police chief than that !!!!

Anonymous said...

Frank Rader has it right. Chief Crone is not charged with anything and an investigation is underway. Let the process run its course.

This harks to the old western movies where the mob storms the jail for mob justice to hang someone without due process. Its not democracy to convict people with mob rule. Chief Crone has rights and to violate those rights and not let the process continue goes against the fundamentals our country is founded upon.

SHAME SHAME SHAME

Anonymous said...

What was even more telling were the derogatory comments being made by the young members of the town staff near the sound board. bystanders heard a young black male who recently had casts removed from his feet and a short dark-haired white male with TOM I.D. badges on making crude remarks throughout the entire meeting when protesters were present. By contrast, the police present cautioned some reminding the hecklers this is America, they have a right to their say.
It is a sad state when you can't even excercise your civil rights at a town hall meeting.

Anonymous said...

What I'd really like to know now is this. WHY when the taxpayers pay for a membership at Gold's Gym for the commissioners does Frank Rader feel he has to go to the police dept. to work out?
Hey, can I have your membership Frank?Or are you just trying to rub shoulders with the average Joe Blow?

Anonymous said...

I agree, he does deserve "innocent until proven guilty," in a court of law.

But I believe his detractors are asking that the investigation hurry along so that he may go to trial if deserved.

They also believe he should be above reproach and not be paid for this length of time.

I understand both sides. The investigation must unfold but people do not like what they perceive to be a long-time on the payroll if the investigation drags on and on.

Anonymous said...

Face it. The town elected the wrong Frank. But the town would have been boring if Frank Owens would have been re-elected as you would not have Radar to pick on.

Anonymous said...

"Rader" sorry spell check again caught it... FRANK RULES!!!

Anonymous said...

There is an election coming and if Erskine Smith or Steve Husemann don't have the gonads to do their job, vote them out or march on every board meeting until they resign. Frank Rader is an egotistical idiot who needs to keep his mouth shut to the press. Why doesn't the mayor instruct him to just say no comment if he only puts his foot in his mouth.

The board was noticeably rattled by the commenters. I demand the town discipline the employees mentioned above. I have done you the courtesy of not revealing your names and I'm sure those in charge will know who you are both by description and eyewitness account. SHAME SHAME SHAME
You know I'm pretty sure the British used what ever the popular term of the day was to describe Washington and his band of "freaks" when they decided to attack during the winter and suprise the Brits. If that band of "freaks" hadn't acted with courage in the face of crticism, this country wouldn't exist today.

The moral is this:
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF ONE
the moral of the story is this:

Thanks tic toc, for helping these people to expose themselves for all to see. Well, that is if they had the balls to identify themselves like the protestors did today in heat of the August sun. But they will simply continue to run other people down merely because they demand that a police chief be treated no better than the "lowly" DARE officer he fired.

Yeah Franklin Campbell was there. But what did he do RESIGN!! If he wanted to do such good things for Mooresville he could have remained a commissioner.

By resigning Franklin Campbell became a nobody. He has no clout and deserves no respect.

Fieldstone Presbyterian Church said...

OK, I stayed through the entire meeting and am just now getting on here.

Stay focused and don't bother responding to the detractors. If they aren't willing to man up (or woman up) and speak their thoughts at the microphone, then they obviously don't need the attention we give them. At least the little children actually chose which signs they wanted to carry and received an education on the workings of the rights of citizens, and asked questions about them. Pretty smart kids.

First, I paid for the meeting room out of my personal funds. No complaints, just refuting the fact that Mr. Homesley fronted everything. I'd not met Mr. or Mrs. Homesley until this evening, and found them to be quite wonderful.

Secondly, whether the total was 50 or 100 is not the questions, but is yet another way to attempt to divert our attention. I'm sorry, where were you? Ah, probably too busy eating bon-bons and watching re-runs of some dumb show. The important thing is that we DID it -- and we sent a very strong message, which you could visually tell was received by the commissioners and made some feel very uncomfortable: "last warning" ... "really, last warning." "Now what do I do?"

As to the ridiculous assertion that a town employee can only be dismissed when a criminal charge has been leveled against him, that's the most ridiclous statement I've ever heard. The legal standard of conduct and the level of standard of conduct of the town's personnell policies are substantially different issues. Mr. Crone should be fired for his fraudulent representaions of CFK. Mr. Smith should be terminated ased on his failture to adequately supervise department heads. Mr. Rader can't be fired, but should be removed following a public hearing conducted by the Town Board.

The gravitas of our position lies in the fact that we're demanding that the Town follow and equally inplement their own policies. They can't get around that one, so let's falsely point the finger to the investigation which is geared for criminal activity -- not personnel activity.

Lastly, a recall resolution was provided to the Town Board this evening. I will be setting up meeting with state level officials in the near future to gain their support since this will be something which has to go through the state legislature. I'll let you know when I get that meeting set up and hope you will be able to be there with us. Citizens for Responsible Goverment can have a variety of foci if we art to form an actual group. If there's anyone who would like to meet to discuss the possibilities, please contact me so we can set up a time.
Regardless of whether or not dues are charged, we need to organize into a political action committee which evaluates and recommends politicians based on a predetermined series of standards.

Sorry for the epistle. I've promised my wife I'll stay off the blog for a few days so I can get some family time back into the week. Email me with any questions/comments.

Attention all you newcomers!
I'd like to point out the exhibit on the left, known now as 12:35 poster.
Isn't this fascinating, folks the prime example of old guard ignorance in it's habitat. Notice the multi-colored cereal in it's bowl.See the especially large mouth, the result of decades and decades of insulting behavior that has adapted it to it's habitat.
It is known to frequent back-room gambling establishments and second-rate sports bars in the wild. This particular specimen has to be sedated on a regular basis or it will try to harm itself by beating it's head againest the bars, calling out for tic tacs. Weare puzzled by it's attempt at speech and the need for breath control it is obsessed with.
It's caretaker, a secretive plump middle-aged man in an officer's white shirt is known to visit it late at night.
Sadly, we cannot return it to the wild because it is riddled with disease and could be contagious.
Now, moving on to the tiger cage....

I agree with you anonymous at 11:32. That was very much a Freak Show. When are you people going to find something better to do. Do you realize that your Freak Show tarnishes the image of this fine town more than whats going on now. For crying out loud you have your kids holding up picket signs. Heck, you probably even had them scribble the disconcerting information. Get a life people. Investigations take time. Do you not understand the legal system, innocent until proven guilty? Bureaucracy is hard to understand and even harder to understand for those who decide to take matters into their own hands. I wish everyone in this town would leave well enough alone. Its not time to keep marching or protesting, instead its time to let the government filter itself out.

That's right Todd, and if i waltzed into the town parking lot and drove off in a car not assigned to me don't you think every cop in town would be on my tail? It would look like a Smokey and the Bandit rerun and it should.
If I waltzed into MPD with a gym bag, don't you think I'd get a little vacation at Broughton Hospital or on the forth floor of Davis?
They are so arrogant they made fun of people as they were speaking and marching. They stood in the windows and poked fun.
What do you think would happen if I walked into a abnk, smiling and waving and tried to leave with say, several thousand? Are they going to sit there and tell me to tell the misses Hi?

Fieldstone Presbyterian Church said...

Did someone just suggest that we've tarnished the image of the town and need to leave well enough alone?

What world do you live in? Have you not read the bill of rights for NC? It tells us to do just the opposite. We're trying to remove the tarnishes so the image can be re-imaged into something positive. Others appear to be trying to buff out the old image, which will very shortly re-appear in much the same way -- a great big bowtie, a goatee, and balding heads.

No matter what anyone else has posted here; it was a very pitiful turnout for a protest.Troutman would have turned out more protesters about moving a stoplight than Mooresville did about a major issue. The whole thing was a dismal failure.

Anonymous said...

You people are just trying to be meaner than the poster before you, you are getting off the issue. We have a poilce chief that ran a CHARITY, remember for seniors and children alike as well as those facing hard times(per HIS web site)And no money went towards what he said it would. The signs posted for the golf tournament stated for COPS FOR KIDS/D.A.R.E.-nothing went to DARE- a big ZERO, it is a budgeted items as stated in earlier blogs! Money was TAKEN from the evidence room (with proof, as stated on the deposit receipt) And there are still supporting his position as well as for Erskins, what is the reasoning?
Where was the support for Matt Burleson (DARE officer) when he was fired for the giving away of bunnies to the MIS principal, Mrs Morrow? He taught all of our children and they all LOVE him, (even the younger children at the schools love him) I bet he would have loved to be put on leave with pay. How can the chief really justify his firing? And not expect to be fired himself.

Our town has some really big problems. Don't make fun of someone because they stand up to make a change. The hate has to stop somewhere, the mis-trust of our local government needs to be reborn and that will only happen when those in question step down or are let go. Be men and step down, Esrskin it is time for you to move on and play golf daily. Chief move to Vegas and live the good life. Rader stay out of the Police dept and let those fine officers begin to heal.

Thank you Jaime for all you do, You are wonderful and you are opening up alot of eyes as to see that YES one person can make a difference.

Anonymous said...

I am fascinated by this reference to .01% of the population. There's a phrase for that: lying with statistics.

The statement is roughly correst, as far as it goes. But it is also the wrong metric to use.

The relevant metric is that 50 people protested John Crone, Erskine Smith, and John Crone. About a dozen others joined us in the meeting room. Zero came out to support the old guard.

It is perverse in a democracy to claim that citizen activism gives the town a bad name. Official corruption coupled with citizen apathy gives the town a bad name. As far as allowing the government to "filter itself out," the people are the government. Those in office are simply trustees of the power we collectively possess. If they abuse or neglect the trust they are give, we are duty bound to hold them accountable.

And another thing: The idea that a town employee can only lose his job if he is charged or convicted of a crime is lunacy. And it certainly isn't the standard that was used to fire many fine town employees, including a good number of police officers dispatched by Crone, who refused to do the bidding of the good ol' boys. The era of doulbe standards is over.

Crone is certainly innocent of criminal wrongdoing until proven guilty, but a town employee has no right to continued employment unless he is proved guilty of a criminal offense beyond a reasonable doubt.

About 25 adults? 10 or so soon to be or maybe a young teen age year and about 15 kids that had no idea what they were there for except that their parents brought them. I am sure that they would have rather been playing soccer or with their friends.
Maybe the supporters of the town did not want to look like a bunch of fools like .01% of you.
Same old guard of the cfog only came out with a few new faces but the old ones still causing problems.

Oh and sorry that not everyone is smart as you and has nothing to do with their time but to look up articles and documents that annoy the hell of out everyone. This is no call for an uprising. After watching the News 14 recap of last evening's events the problems are still there. Erskine Smith trying not to laugh when he says people have a right to their opinion, and Frank Rader too smiling as he says no one has been charged and people do not understand that.
The arrogance these two persons have for themselves is ridiculous. Do not lose hope. Keep on and hold them accountable. For those on this blog that try and steer you away from the light at the end of the tunnel, they will one day be quiet too. Their arrogance will soon fail them as well.

Hi Jaime

Last night was a long time coming, but a significant beginning.

Judging by the complacent arrogance of the Board, nothing important will occur soon, and if they ever consider drafting a Recall addition to the Town ordinances, it will be if they are all defeated in their next opportunity to be reelected.

My suggestion is, for the active group to prepare the necessary paperwork, etc., for a referendum vote to be included in the next city election.

Harold Salisbury

Anonymous said...

My suggestion, Harold, is you need to worry about Statesville now. You no longer have any say in what takes place in Mooresville.

Charlotte Observer,August 5, 2008, "Across the Region"

"About 50 people marched on the Mooresville Town Hall Monday evening to protest what they called corruption in the town's government.

Humming the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and chanting "we demand justice" and "enough is enough," they said they were angered by questions surrounding Police Chief John Crone's Cops for Kids program. Crone is on paid leave while the State Bureau of Investigation looks into bookkeeping and the handling of money in the program. Crone has said he has done nothing wrong.

Larry Green, pastor of Fieldstone Presbyterian Church in Mooresville and founder of Citizens for Responsible Government-Mooresville, organized Monday's rally, which was held outside Town Hall before the Town Board's regular meeting.

The protesters want the town board to fire interim Town Manager Erskine Smith for what they say was his lack of oversight of the program, and they want a recall vote for any town commissioner who has supported Crone before the investigation is complete."

It amazes me that our march of yesterday would bring out such verbal venom. They not only vilify the adults but denegrate the wisdom of children. Children of today understand far more than the degraders and if they (the chilren)don't understand something they are full of questions.

Since you negative people seem to be really terrified at the success of the march and are trying to debunk it. It won't work, as the more lies you write will only make us stronger.

You are correct. We expected at least one "mole" at our meeting, and we took steps to keep the powers that be guessing. Government is not entitled to know what dissenters are up to. It is citizens who are entitled to know what their government is up to.

Mr. Whitlow's presence was expected, duly noted and appropriately accounted for. He may do well to remember the adage "things are not always as they seem." Unfortunately for Mr. Whitlow, he has always tipped his hand in this blog because he took what he thinks he saw at face value.

Larry Green, now that I know that you are the pastor of Fieldstone it really makes me sick to my stomach listening to your redderick. I feel sorry for you congregation, or have you brain washed them with you redderick?????

I just read somebody talking about how Erskine Smith "has done tons for this town, his church, and the community." Are you kidding me? He handed over a quarter of a million dollar deal to his childhood buddy (read all about it in the Gatton Report!), he's put the corrupt police chief on a paid vacation, under the table he's trying to delay the audit and investigations of Cops for Kids, just to name a few things he's "done for this town". I don't know or care what he's done for his church. But I can tell you this, Erskine has used and abused his daddy's good name.

We were in the traffic that was stopped last night to let the marchers pass. I was thrilled to finally see somebody take a stand in this town. I was especially impressed by the diversity of the group, which seems somewhat rare in Mooresville. I was also impressed by how long I had to sit and wait for them to pass. It was eye opening to read the signs, too.

Hey, 11:56, I think the word you're looking for is "rhetoric", not "redneck", or whatever it is you wrote. As for Rev. Green, he is one of the few TRUE Christians I have ran across in this town. Jesus Christ preached against corruption of any kind, or does your own pastor leave that part out when he "preaches" to you. You sound a heck of a lot more brainwashed than Rev. Green. Go cry to your friends, Crone and Smith.

I participated in the protest last night, something I have never done in my life. I have had a fortunate life with many wonderful experiences. Last night will join those experiences. It felt so amazing to be doing something fearless, convicted and necessary. I loved being in the presence of people who were a different age, race, color, and background from me. I loved the fact that we were all there to fight injustice and corruption instead of to get something for ourselves or our pocketbooks. Thank you, thank you to the organizers. Your efforts will be richly blessed.

You just gotta chuckle when you read how furious the Crook Lovers on this blog are over this simple little march. They're writhing around, scratching at walls, pitching fits, calling names, getting awfully close to slander (go ahead, make a certain lawyer's day!), and doing it all anonymously. Can't say I blame 'em. Who'd wanna admit they're backing somebody (Erskin Smith) whose backing somebody (John Crone) who took charity dollars meant for needy children and the elderly and used it as a personal Vacation Fund?

I attended the town board meeting last night. It was quite the educational experience. The town board seems to have lost all moral authority in the eyes of the community. This situation does not seem to be going away. Our elected leaders must address it decisively. Our town's reputation is at stake.

Anonymous said...

Let me get this straight. Is there a moral degenerate on this blog MAKING FUN OF CHILDREN walking in a protest march? How dare you! Show your face! Tell us who you are! You should be ashamed of yourself! If you refuse to give us your name, I urge everyone on this blog to call you simply "The Moral Degenerate".

It was almost 100 degrees yesterday and you expect me to believe that parents could or would "force" their kids to walk this march? I can't "force" my kid to go to the movies, let alone walk in the sweltering heat. These "kids" are our future and clearly they're learning the right lessons. What are you teaching your children? How to suck the lifeblood of people through taxes? How to cheat, steal and lie in a manner as to avoid getting caught? How to find the right people to befriend so that they can protect you when and if you are caught? You will never tell us who you are, you coward. Those children have more courage than you will ever have, you embarrassment to the human race.

Anonymous said...

I'm a frequent town board meeting goer. There's always a "public comment" section at the beginning where people can get up and talk for 3 minutes to the board. Usually only a couple of the commishes even act like they're interested in what people have to say. Last night I noticed every single one of them was paying attention. The only two who never looked at the speakers or even looked up from their "important" papers were Thunberg and Smith. It just was so obvious. They would not look at anybody, not make eye contact with nobody. My daddy always told me "boy, don't ever trust a man who can't look you in the eye."

Anonymous said...

12:49 My children are among those who this person was ridiculing. Thank you for speaking on our behalf. We love you...

Anonymous said...

I dont believe anyone "made fun" of the kids for being out there. I think they were giving the parents a hard time about forcing the kids to be there instead of doing something like playing with friends or riding bikes.

Anonymous said...

The following observations are not meant to over-dramatize yesterday's march and the campaign for justice underway in this town, but I cannot help but be struck by the parallels between the reactions among some in this community to our march and the reaction of many people to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Consider:

1. Civil rights workers were tagged as outsiders and troublemakers. So are we.

2. Civil rights workers were told that they were making superficially peaceful communities look bad. So are we.

3. Civil rights workers were subject to personal attacks. So are we.

4. Civil rights workers were described as pawns in other people's or institutions' schemes. So are we.

5. Religious figures who participated in the civil rights movement were described as deviating from their duties as pastors and preachers. So are we.

The lesson to be learned is that those who are taught that the current order is just, even when all evidence is to the contrary, will thrash and fight to the end. No attack is beneath them.

They're work is futile, however. Justice will prevail. It is an inevitability, so long as people of good people refuse to be silent.

Anonymous said...

12:58 It may seem impossible to some that our community has actually reared children who are awake enough to choose a protest march over "playing with friends or riding bikes." Yesterday proved them wrong. And there will be more and more children such as these in this community. There is no more tolerance for the old way of doing things here. The Old Guard is history. It is a New Day...

Anonymous said...

that's another similarity. the civil rughts movement employed children protesters and were condemned for it.

I was apart of the protest yesterday. I have to say I was completely shocked and embarrassed by our elected officials and town manager. How dare Frank Rader and Erskine Smith smirk at what the people had to say. They didn't even have the B@#$& to look at the people who were speaking or for that matter look up from the papers they were holding. They are an embarrassment to this town and all of us who live here and pay for their membership to the YMCA. As for the children who were apart of the march..RIGHT ON!! We will teach our children to stand up for what is right in the world, ask questions, and demand answers. Hey Kool Aid lady...why don't you run for the board? Scared???? Fariba...you ROCK!! Here's what I want to know. I was at the meeting too last night. One woman spoke at the beginning of the meeting and she read off a long list of statutes or policies or rules that the former police chief has broken. Nobody on the board said anything to this woman about those rules being broken. I'm just assuming she was reading off of their own "rule books", right? So, if this woman can find all these broken rules, why can't they?

8) Mr. Smith’s use of double standards when enforcing employment policies, as evidenced by his statements in the August 2008 “Town Voice”

This is Day No. 32.

Mr. 0.1%, you need to grow up, our so-called small percentage was still greater by far, than the number showing up in opposition to the marchers' position. As for Mr. Whitlow's appearance at the meeting...he is a tax-paying, law-abiding citizen of Mooresville. That alone gives him the right to take up space in a town meeting. As to Right Reverand Green, don't dare to speak for the fine folks of Fieldstone Church about running for the door. His congregation has full confidence in his abilities. As, a matter of fact, the congregation of Fieldstone Presbyterian grows weekly because of this caring and compassionate minister of God's word. As for the Holmesleys, perhaps it's time that a few of you took a lesson or two from them. Both of these fine people have given up far more than the average person in this town, in order to stand up for justice and for accountability to the general public. Their losses were not financial, or material but deeply personal. As to you suggesting Mrs. Holmesley go back to where she came from, it seems to me she may already be there. Oh no not the country but the conditions. She is after all, living in a town full of corruption, greed and personal vendetta's being fulfilled from political office, through elected officials. She is also living in a town where laws only apply to the not-so-priviledged many; a town where Town Board Members, don't give one iota if they run the taxes so high, that the very people who built, supported and strove to make this town into the wonderful place we once so loved to live, cannot afford to live here, a town in which to stand up and be counted or heard, is to stand up to be slandered and ridiculed. As for Cliff, he has more right that many of you in this town to speak his peace, like myself, he was born, raised and educated here. In those days we thought this little burg was boring, couldn't wait to get out of here and grab the world by the tail. Yet, here is where we came back to raise our children, and to practice the skills that our excellent educations had given us. Yes, here is where we wanted to be. Our boring little burg, where the world still turned a little more slowly, and everyone knew your name and your family. We discovered, our "Town of Mooresville" was gone. And in it's place, was a town in which the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the victims of crime and circumstances become the guilty parties. So go ahead and call us all fruit-loops. What does that make the rest of you out there??? Flakes???, yes that sounds really good, soggy day old corn flakes sitting in spoiled milk. No wonder your attitude and commentary lack freshness. Oh and by the way, watch your backs, you never know who you can trust in this town. I might just be your wife, husband, secretary or best friend. I am, after all....

1:24 pm I have no idea what you are rambling about but I still want you to answer why you think the Chief should remain on the payroll.

Sorry, I forgot a little something for you "Innocent until proven guilty" flakes out there. Just in case you didn't know, the state of North Carolina is a "no cause state", which means, for those of you without a proper education, that guilt or innocence has nothing to do with Crone's dismissal. He can be fired "at will". Why would we even want to keep a Police chief who has tainted our town and our police department in any way. I say fire away. It seems to be the "will" of a good many citizens, even if only 0.125% show up to march in 98 degree heat.

Nice, quoting an Atheist who was crazy in the head. How appropriate coming from this bunch.

Actually, he was opposed to those we would call "hypochristians."
In Nietzsche's eyes, Christianity exists in a hypocritical state wherein people preach love and kindness but find their joy in condemning and punishing others for pursuing that which morality does not allow them to act upon publicly. Nietzsche calls for the strong in the world to break their self-imposed chains and assert their own power, health, and vitality upon the world.

and it's just a quote Kool Aid...good grief!!

You people are too much. You are the reason this town is tarnished. Your constant rhetoric about what should be done and what shouldnt be done. I dont think the majority of you out there could do half of these employees and commissioners do. None of us can actually say 100% what happened and why Chief Crone is still being payed and not fired. Why are there cops that kill people suspended with pay, or teacher who assault their students suspended with pay. There are certain protocols that have to being followed, and its good to see that someone in this town is properly using them. For those of you who are transplants to this town, find a new one PLEASE. For those who think we pay high taxes, move to mecklenburg county then let me hear you complain about Mooresville. For those that are still crying, GET A LIFE.

1:00 and 1:17 p.m. Thank you for that. I felt what you were saying deep in my heart.

This article said that "Another commenter told potential protestors not to be disdainful of small beginnings: “Whether two people show up or twenty at the appointed time and day, you have begun something.”" I passed by the protest yesterday and it looked like you definitely beat your goal. Looked good! I may have to join ya'll next time. I'm pretty fed up with all the waste myself. Those salaries we pay for unnecessary people add up.

redderick??? Didn't he play for Duke?
LOL

is the koolaid lady Kay Salisbury? By the way girl, those pants you had on last night were WAAAAYYYY too tight. Half you stomach and behind was lopped over the elastic. Not a good statement when you're trying to be serious.

Frank Rader smirks at everyone, including his fellow commissioners. He thinks he is in a league by himself, so high in the stratosphere that only God Himself is equal to communicate with him in all his pomposity. He believes himself to be a supremely educated example of superiority.Just listen to the endless, trivial points he interjects at every board meeting.I think he is very blind if he thinks the pressure to relieve him of his post is going to stop anytime soon.

RESIGN NOW RADER.RESIGN CRONE. RESIGN SMITH OR BE TERMINATED.

redderick?? I thought he played for Duke-LOL- I mean Dook.

Somebody needs to check the cemetary. I'll bet the gravesites of Joe Knox and Grady Shoe have heaved where those two rolled over in their graves after last night's march.

Anonymous said...

Let 'em roll. If it wasn't for the crookedness of people like those two, we wouldn't be where we are now.

This is to cowardly Aug. 5 10:50 PM

Thank you for noticing I was there. I guess all the comments about getting out of Mooresville was ignored. Your vulgar observations should have at least had your name. I am not trying to hide under an anonymous comment. We did not see anyone standing up to support the mayor and board. You all are two-fold cowards.

No I am not the Kool-Aid lady.

Also, as a parting comment, I dress for comfort.

Have a good day :)

Kay Salisbury

Hey 10:50! Nice try, but we all know the koolaid lady is a Cronie and Erskine Smith groupie. The Koolaid Lady is also known as the "Sheep Lady" or "RR" or "Doo Doo Eater" or "Baaa Baaa" among other aliases (all her words, not ours) that she has used proudly in the past but is now attempting to distance herself from. It's all the same person who is totally freaked out because we came in and took away her and her husband's gravy train. Just a little "Blog Talk" education for ya.

David, tell me again why your Father was fired from the police force?
Who's in a closet now?

Anonymous said...

hey 10:31 thanks for the update.
wow, kay you're burnin' 'em up!
a lot of fire from an old girl.

Anonymous said...

Kay, the only thing that was vulgar was your girth exposed for all to see peeping out from under that blouse and over the top of your slacks.I'd go up at least 2 pants sizes for maximum comfort.
Kudos for standing up for what you believe in.
And I am not the previous poster just someone who had to look away.

Personal attacks are so child like. My 2 year ols can criticize the way you do. I missed the march on Monday, my family was sick and had been all weekend. I very much wish I could have been there. Having been a part of this community for so long I to begin to doubt if anything will ever be resolved. They all scratch one another somewhere. Crone will never end up being brough to justice becuase no one has the balls to do it!

Anonymous said...

You also spell like a 2 year old

Anonymous said...

Well, well, a hero for the other side. Thank you Marsha for your observation. I am sorry that my looks bother you but I am who I am. My appearance has nothing to do with the march I hope you understand our integrity and honesty should mean more to you than my appearance. Our wish for the citizens of Mooresville is heart felt and we will not receive any economic benefit.

So Marsha when you see me again, please either come up and say hello or turn away as I certainly don't want to upset you.

Kay Salisbury

So, as I said to the coward, have a good day:)

Last check.... looks don't get you past the gates and in to the Kingdom of Heaven. Beauty is skin deep. So many people, when cornered, choose to make fun of people. To make fun of others is a tool used by those that are very insecure. It helps them to feel important.

Don't stoop to the level of those. If you lay with dogs you get fleas.

Thae vast majority here are here for one reason and that is to seek justice where there has been none for far to long. As Mooresville grows we need representation that has the interest in the people not the interest of a chosen few.

Crone will never step up and resign. He feels that he did nothing wrong. The town administrators will not remove him. As the letter in the previous post pointed out "background checks" were conducted by Crone on the officials.

We must continue to fight this fight and see it through to the end. It is by far the only way to take back control of the town.

Kay, you're beautiful inside and out, and we love you for the way you keep speaking up in this blog. Unlike most of us, you have the courage to put your name on your words. As for the hideous person who has been attacking you, this is the same type of person who would make fun of others because of their religion, or color, or race, or nationality, or socio-economic background. They are ignorant, and they are Crone and Smith supporters. Very telling.

Anonymous said...

Actually, just paying her back for the very snotty comment that was made to me by her ,1:05.
I didn't appreciate her words either . I admired her spunk until she insulted me, a perfect stranger to her. If there is a next time, I will not hold back.

No way the sheep would ever be disrespectful to anybody. Of course when they are you never hear a single peep about it, but what do you expect from these people. You will never run across a more hypocritical group then these 25.
