WOW...This is amazing. An entity that actually understands and responds to what it means to lose the public's trust and confidence. Perhaps the Mooresville town board could be taking notes.

(excerpt from the article)

"When the public found out about the amount of money in which was given, many became alarmed about the financial integrity of the organization.

In a written statement released to the media on Tuesday, the United Way Board of Directors said: "The continued success of our United Way is threatened by an erosion of public confidence and trust resulting from the current controversy over compensation, including the supplemental retirement benefits for president Gloria Pace King."

Furthermore, the board admitted it made a serious mistake and the error was not made by a single person.

The United Way said it apologizes to the community: "Executive committee members who approved the retirement plan offer a simple statement to United Way agencies, volunteers, donors, staff, other board members, and the public: We are sorry."

The board of directors intends to do the following things in an effort to restore faith among the community:

* The United Way of Central Carolinas has decided to end Ms. King's employment and bring in new leadership.

(list of other steps they will take)

I used to work at a company that made you donate to United Way. If you didn't you had no job and that came from the HR director.

What do you mean, 8:35? Public confidence is at an all-time high in Mooresville, haven't you heard? At least that's the bill of goods being sold by the RATS. Never mind the only people "buying" it now are their little friends and family members. By the way, Erskine, where are all the investigation results on your friend Crone that you tried so doggone hard to hang on to? Oh that's right. So much to do, so little time. No time to return that particular "call" or answer that particular "email" that could unsnag the holdups right? Who can blame you for being too "busy" to get the ball rolling on those pesky audits and reports and whatnots? After all, there are all those lunches and golf games and "meetings" and back-to-back vacations that demand your valuable time and attention.

I don't buy it. They said they had to bring her up-to-0date on her retirement and the large amount was covering past errors in not funding, didn't they?

So, they make things right with her, which makes the public mad, so they fire the person they made things right with?

Does this mean the next president doesn't get a retirement plan?

This is a classic case of too little too late. It will take many many years for the United Way to bounce back from this public relations nightmare, and as a result many will suffer. The United Way board bears the burden of this. They should have self-policed, and they should have acted before they found themselves with no other choice but to act. Trust takes a lifetime to build and a moment to destroy.

Mooresville police officer David Fortson said Waldrop tried to run him over as she tried to get away from the store and jumped into her SUV Monday.

GLad to hear you were not hurt Officer Fortson and that you are still on the job no matter what has happened, you might be one of the good ones. Good Job, you could have shot her in the head and never missed a day of work, she is lucky to be alive.

NOrmally I am ok with someone who steals a sandwich because they are starving, but a sandwich for crying out loud, eat it, cure the hunger and go make some honest money so it does not happen again, what was she going to do with 500 dollars in groceries, that is a lot more then survival.

Ask any Deli owner and I bet they would have gave a hungry woman with no money a sandwich. I know I would have.

Oh just let me say one more thing, you dont get to steal the sandwich if you OWN an SUV, you get to sell the SUV first LOL

It like people who rob with guns, sell the gun idiot LOL

Anyway, good job, everyone walked away.

8:35 If you are being sincere, I think that you are 180 from fact. The United Way Board did the same as the Town of Mooresville, no responsiblity for the people who allowed abuse and mistrust to foster.

The board is covering its rear but please remember it was the board that agreed and accepted the ridiculous pay structure. The board made that call, none of the board stepped down, and a lady that they praised for doing a wonderful job will be paid for the next couple of years while they pay a new director a salry in the $240,000 range. I will not give to United Way and will donate straight to groups that I think merit the gift.

Question, if the large payout last year was for making up for past underfunding of retirement benefit, which was reported by WCNC and Charlotte Observer, why does firing her now release the United Way from still funding that money. The claim that now she is not employed and therefore not entitled to retirement compensation payments would only hold true for future payments. Back money still due her would have to be paid and I would lay money that Bill Diehl will get it for her. This is just like the town of Mooresville doing things and interpting fiction from hard facts.

I believe the giving for United Way is being dramatically hurt, that they are circling wagons led by Duke Power, BOA, and Wachovia which are BIG supporters of this giving tree. I would not be surprised if they are not calling people right now for solicitations for next year to get a feel to see if this "firing" has stemmed the bloodletting. This is a joke and the United Way will now get to pay two directors large salaries and the people and agencies that need that money are going to get shortchanged as usual.

Now, 8:35 if tongue was in cheek, I apologize for my rant.

8:35....Please keep in mind that the United Way is about to begin their annual VOLUNTARY fundraising drive so they have to be responsive to the public outcry.

The TOM just sent out our newly increased property tax bills....which are far from voluntary. If you make the choice NOT TO PAY, they will remove you from your property. They don't have to worry about people choosing not to contribute. They only have to worry about people remembering their tax bill on Election Day.

In the meanwhile, we keep puttering along with the likes of Erskine Smith, sucking up $100,000 a year in salary for letting crap like the Crone/CFK scandal happen, not to mention about 10 other such scandals that have left this town redfaced under his watch and with the regional nickname “Dirty Mo”. Where’s OUR “Board of Directors” who would apologize to us for this continued situation and take steps to repair the damage done to public confidence?
