Before you fill out your next pledge card for the United Way of Central Carolinas, you may be interested to know this:
Contributions from Mooresville and Lake Norman to the United Way of Central Carolinas’ 2007 campaign topped $1.4 million, according to a March 2008 United Way news release. That same year, the United Way of Central Carolinas paid its president, Gloria Pace King, more than $1.2 million in salary, expenses and employee benefits.
More specifically, the United Way of Central Carolinas – the parent organization of the Mooresville-Lake Norman United Way – gave King a $365,000 salary, a $35,000 expense allowance and contributed more than $822,000 into her employee benefit plan, according to the United Way's recently-released 2007 tax returns (http://www.uwcentralcarolinas.org/images/financials/990FY2007.pdf)
Citing King’s success as president, the United Way calls the salary justified. But the director of a charity watchdog group, the National Center for Responsive Philanthropy, calls the salary "excessive," according to a developing story on www.wcnc.com. This is ridculous to pay her this much. This should be a volunteer or a part time job. The people who gave her this job should be dismissed from their boards. I have given to the UF every year but I will not give anymore. I will pick the charities that I want to have my money.
Some businesses and towns almost make you give if you don't they try to embrass you for not giving if you chose not too.
Let your local UF people know how you feel and when asked to give ask them why you should pay this lady's salary.
Try my charity, I give to M-I Connection by way of the General Fund of Mooresville. They haven't drawn the first payment yet, but they will. The worst part about it, you don't pick this charity either. The shame I feel is not from witholding my cash, its from the fact that our town board and mayor fell for this "pie in the sky."

Hmmmm "pie in the sky"is good stuff and supports downtown businesses.. order your pizza today its highly recommended.
I stopped giving to UW a long time ago. They are basically the Mafia, strong-arming businesses and employees into giving under threat of firing or public embarassment, and using bully tactics to take a share of the actual charities that actually give out money. Avoid the middle man and give to the charity of your choice, and try not to get your knee-caps broken in the process.
The Salary for the president is excessive. If the amount was cut in half this would make more sense. I wonder how much money she gave to charity in 2007?
Does the charity have a 4 star rating? www.charitynavigator.org
It is unfortunate how large employers like Duke Energy essentially force their employees to donate to this high overhead United Way. Then the execs get credit for how much money they raised. The UW has always smelled of a good old boys club where people can pat each other on the back on how good they are for the community--now we know where the money goes. Give directly to the charities of your choice after you analyze how they handle their overhead. The compensation of the CEO of United Way in Charlotte is obscene even if you don't include this huge retirement contribution. Shame. And give to charities who don't try to play the United Way or Town of Mooresville (taxpayer funded) charity game.
If you check out the financials of most charities you will see very little money actually goes to the charity.
Hmmmmm... $822,000 in "employment benefits" - that's a hell of a dental plan!
This is just more of the same scamming done on the public that thinks their contributions are directly benefiting those in need.
I have seen corporate pressure placed on employees to contribute to the United Way and am disgusted because I know of the flagrant mis-appropriation of funds to benefit those who are not in need, so that they can live pluse lifestyles.
Larry you are correct most of these charities have overpaid directors. When I get the phone call to donate I always ask for the charities to send me a copy of their finacials. I have yet to recieve one.
They also support child killing under the term "Family Planing". Sick people.
I knew that!! That's why i don't contribute, I have my own charity......i spend time and money to those people who spend their time and money on me 25 years ago and also i volunteer for those of my long lost friends who need help to settle their new lives in the country of their choice. That's what i call charity!! In my own TIME!
