New Economic Development newsletter

FYI, here's the first edition of the Mooresville-South Iredell Economic Development Corporation's newsletter. It includes three pages; click on each document for a larger version:

I am impressed. I still can't get that bad taste out of my mouth that the SICDC didn't pay their interest payment for the last two years with Mayor Thunberg sitting on the board. I also can't understand why Mia Setzer didn't say anything about nonpayment when she was notified by Potter and Co. that the financial statements didn't reflect the payments and that Steve Gambril didn't think it was a good legal strategy to file Deeds of Trust on the parcels still under SICDC control so we would get a check at closing for our loans. Not to mention it took the Gatton Report to expose these facts so the Town would get off their a__ to protect the taxpayers. I thought most privledge licenses were a flat fee? They want me to open my books to the Town of Mooresville to verify gross receipts? I think we are seeing a shake down in the making because our elected officials have overextended us with every project that comes their way. Perhaps if every contract the town Board entered into was a set amount, instead of the vendor appearing before the Board every few months with a sob story asking for another hand out we wouldn't be in this fix--If I were looking to relocate a business and knew the "Real Story" about Mooresville, I'd probably go somewhere else. Sell that SICDC!

A nice glossy newsletter isn't going to make us forget how secretive and closed this EDC continues to be. I haven't heard anything about their being willing to open up their books to the public, even though they're willing to accept hundreds of thousands of dollars in public funds. Come clean, EDC.

If an organization receives .01 of public tax dollars, they should open up the books for inspection. The latest example of "the Game" being plyaed on the citizens of Mooresville was the M-I Connection meeting. The Tribune was notified on Friday of the Monday meeting, so they could only inform the public via web page. The Report notified readers ASAP, but that was the only notice. I think since we notify land owners and the public of zoning change/public hearings via newspaper, letter and sign, the M-I Connection folks should be required to publish in the Tribune a notice of any meeting 30 Days in advance. I would also contend that a 1-month prior notice in the cable bills be included to let subscribers know of the public meetings. Please not another TOWN VOICE propoganda tool, but since the M-I folks work for us -the taxpayer-act like it. Another example of "No thanks for your input" even though you pay the bills! As for this EDC, maybe Commissioner Carney can explain to his brother and their Board of Directors the definition of "Transparency."

Interesting that several of the people/groups listed in this newsletter can also be found on the list of the Thunberg major campaign contributors. Same old same old good old boys except they've now "morphed" into a new hiding place and called it "the EDC".

The typographical and syntax errors and somewhat juvenile tone (i.e. ending a sentence with "???") on this "newsletter" are somewhat embarrassing. Take a close look at the first page and see how many errors you can pick out. The guy who is editing it was hired supposedly for his PR skills but this is an inauspicious start. Is this document something that you really want to put into the hands of local CEO's?

Thank you for your insightful critique of my work. I worked many hours on the flyer/brochure and for your information, I got an A+ on that senior project and I can include that in my portfolio next year. Thank you again for the kudos
