Crone indicted

Former Mooresville Police Chief John Crone has been indicted by a state grand jury, the Report has learned from a number of sources this week.

The charges are unknown at this time because the indictment was apparently ordered sealed. That means the charges will not be public record until the indictment is served.

Nearly two years have passed since questions were first posted here about Crone’s Cops for Kids organization (http://thegattonreport.blogspot.com/2008/06/what-is-cops-for-kids.html). Within a week after the Report and The Mooresville Tribune exposed questions about, and discrepancies in, the Cops for Kids financial records – including a $361 deposit of “loose change from the evidence room” into the Cops for Kids account – the Town of Mooresville asked the DA's Office to bring in the SBI to investigate. And within the month, Crone was suspended, then fired.

Three months ago, District Attorney Sarah Kirkman confirmed that the SBI’s probe was complete but said she still had questions for the investigating agent (http://thegattonreport.blogspot.com/2010/02/sbis-cops-for-kids-probe-complete-da.html).

It’s clear those questions have been answered.

What is not as clear is why the indictment issued early this week was sealed, and why it apparently hasn’t yet been served. Current and former members of the law-enforcement community indicated to the Report this week that it’s common practice for the judicial system to allow current/former government officials – and even some private citizens – to turn themselves in, as opposed to being shamed by an official serving of an indictment.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office will reportedly be responsible for serving the indictment.

We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.

7:06 you are just another individual concerned that the truth just might get out. You idiots make no sense at all in your posts.

If you are "glad this garbage website, is based down in the southern end of the county" and you "country folk dont like drama, and he said she said", why in the hell are you here?

One reason... to try to discredit information and a source of investigative reporting that will eventually lead to the downfall of you and those around you.

I don't like ballet or opera so I don't go, don't watch it on tv or on the computer. I've got no reason to. You, on the other hand have a reason that you have to be here; to attempt to cover your ass. It's like the Crone deal all over again but with a lot more players and a lot more at stake.

7:12, call WBTV and ask them. I'm not going to play your moronic game of jumping through verbal hoops just so you can make some stupid comment or say I'm lying.

"Never argue with a stupid person, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

Get your paperwork ready and take me to court. See how much shit I talk. Quit threatening a lawsuit and quit hiding behind an anonymous post. Don't you have some possum traps to check?

7:13, and 7:16 since your the same person. Please believe we can out debate a liar, and a scam like yourself. All your crowd runs on is rumor central. You have never had the balls to say what you say on here, to the person your saying it about. So keep on hiding, and starting new scams. We dont mind might as well, all it does is make us stronger.

7:21 haha yea i thought you would say something like that. Your parents should have whipped that butt a little more when you were coming up. But like the good book says, spare the rod, and spoil the child. Thats what you are a little self centered always right liar.

Kudos Jamie! You have done a fine job. You should sleep well tonight knowing that you made a difference. Thank you.

The Gatton Report rocks once again! I just watched the video on WBTV. (DVR is cool!) Anyway, congrats Jamie on a fine job and finally getting the recognition you deserve.

Well I for one hope she went to the media herslef and blew the whistle on how a couple people are trying to shut her up again. its never worked before and its not going to work now. if nobody has done any wrong then they got nothing to be worried about. on the other hand if you've been up to no good better pack up your shit and get ready to give up your post like our police chief did.

GIRL POWER

Show 'em how it's done Jamie. I hope the S.B.I. is taking notes on how corruption is dug up and gotten rid of. It is time for them to get off their duff and start doing their job. They need to start with going through Erskine Smith and Mitch Abraham's bank records and papers one piece at a time. Then they need to have a nice little sit down with Bill Thunberg and Frank Rader about the cable deal and why we only own a bunch of outdated wires for the hundred million we paid under their watch. And then they can work their way out to the county and start investigating how the landfill land sale went down and who got rich off of it. And keep going from there.

I have been following the Gatton report for several years. I don't indulge in posting my thought often because the quality of some of the posts seem to go downhill after about the first page. The articles are always first rate and many of the comments that follow are informative and well thought out. Those who post in a manner which is clearly attack without merit actually give more validity to the story. Without ones' guilt or involvement in the accused activities there would be no need for such diatribe. Even though these mentioned posts are an annoyance, I will continue to read the Gatton Report and support the furtherment of it's effort to expose questionable activity in government function. Those of you who state that you have no need to be reading this should continue your reading time elsewhere. Please don't subject yourself to something that you say you don't like and as a result bore us with your caveman philosophy. Miss Gatton... good job.

I just checked out the news report on line. You people are fierce down there in Mooresvile, North Carolina, and it looks like you got yourselves a fear less leader.

I never thought this kind of grass root anti corruption activism was going on in the south. I mean that's where the phrase "Good Old Boys Network" was coined, right? I guess you have officially schooled us.

Miss Gatton, my initial reaction when I was first watching this video was that you'd better start watching your back, double lock your doors, perhaps hire yourself a body guard.

Then the reporter started talking about an organized march on your town hall and showed the pictures of marchers. After that, my reaction was whoever tries to mess with you is going to have to be out of their mind and curious about what life would be like living as an inmate in a prison cell.

It looks like you have a mighty force behind you. Keep on rocking it out people! You're definitely lighting a fire under some of us out here.

IMPRESSED

Now that this indictment's come out on the former police chief, the D.A. and the S.B.I. must go back and reexamine former Commissioner Frank Rader's role in the matter. There is every reason to believe Mr. Rader attempted to use his position to obstruct justice and to intimidate possible witnesses. His visit to the MPD and his ensuing remarks to police officers in attendance in the midst of the investigation is well documented, as is the public outcry against him as a result of that particular visit. If it were not for the Gatton Report's relentless exposure of his misbehavior, he could very well have single handedly stopped the investigation in its tracks and therefore thwarted justice. This is an extremely serious matter, and it must not be allowed to be brushed under the rug.

Anonymous said...

Is anybody else getting the dribble that Frank's still mailing out? We get it, laugh at him, and hit the delete button. Frank's pretty harmless though. He's just another idiot who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He can't help himself. He's oblivious that he's just a buffoon and somewhere along the way turned into a laughing stock.

Anonymous said...

You have done an incredible job Jaime. I looked through some of your original reporting on the Cops For Kids (on the left side of this page, under Labels, you can click on Cops For Kids) and I was amazed at how thoroughly you covered this unfortunate issue. You are to be commended for your courage, your persistence, and your selflessness.

Anonymous said...

Yeah I'm getting Frank Rader's email crap too. Somebody please remind him that we voted his ass out of office by a huge margin if I recall correctly. And no I don't think he's harmless. He and that worthless former mayor saddled us with millions and millions of debt over the cable they were so excited about buying. How's that harmless? Why is it neither one's gotta answer for that? Something's wrong with this picture.

Anonymous said...

If you want to be amused, click on "They Had Their Say...Now We Have Ours" under "Labels" and read a joint letter by a local gang who called themselves "Citizens for Ethical Treatment of Others". This is what throwing your imagined weight around looks like.

Anonymous said...

I think the Investigattons should reconvene and start investigating Radar and Thunburg's role in buying the cable system.

Anonymous said...

Read the letter. Hilarious! That'll teach 'em a lesson to sign a letter before having all the facts. I guess they thought Erskine Smith would give Crone his job back and then they'd have a police chief in their debt. Oops. Didn't quite work out that way looks like. Life's a bitch ain't it.

Anonymous said...

I got 2 Q's: Anybody know what happened with the CH2MHill scam? And what letter are you all talking about and who wrote it?

Anonymous said...

Mooresville's the place to be! Corrupt people watch out! You can't hide out here anymore. Better move on down the road jack.

Anonymous said...

The letter was written soon after the former police chief was suspended. It was in defense of him and his actions. It was written by local businessmen and sent to the town board in an effort to protect him. The writers were Chuck Moore, Mike Cook, Aubrey Calhoun, Nick Carrington, Victor Theobalds, Mike Levine, Alice Lee, Woody Washam, Tommy Bowles, Don Carney, Mike Heinen, John Melius and Chick Pless. It is unclear who orchestrated this effort, but all of these people personally signed it. As far as I know, they have never recanted it, despite everything that has followed.

I think this letter best exemplifies just what Ms. Gatton has had to deal with and what she has been up against in her uphill battle to expose corruption in Mooresville. It truly takes herculean effort to overcome such collective adversity and ostrich mentality by even those who perceive themselves as community leaders.

"IMPRESSED" (you write @ 8:18 am today). You got that right buddy. You can't imagine the rain of wrath and trouble that would befall anyone who tries to mess with our Jaime. As you can see you shouldn't underestimate the power of anonymous citizen activists wielding a computer as their only weapon.

And whoever wrote @ 10:23 am today, count me in! I'm ready to do some more investigating and cleaning up.

A Proud Investigatton

Oh boy. Sounds like the natives are getting restless again. What gives?

Anonymous said...

Somebody said it earlier. I recognize a familiar pattern. If you have been abusing your powers or dipping into the public kitty, or stealing time playing golf in the middle of the day (I'm talking to YOU Erskine), it's time to take cover. Crone used to laugh at the Gatton Report and Bill Thunberg joined in, calling her irrelevant (heard it with my very own ears). I guess she who laughs last laughs the hardest.

Anonymous said...

I know Jaime Gatton personally, and I can tell you she is not laughing at all. She doesn't find anything funny about any of this. And you can see that when you listen to her on the video of the news cast. Every time she is tipped off to yet another corrupt public official, her top emotion is extreme disappointment in them and in the fact that it takes as much effort as it does to uncover their wrongdoing and get them replaced. So, no, she's not trying to outlaugh anyone. She's got three small children to raise, a husband, a house to take care of, endless chores and errands. And yet she has also been able to manage what none of us ever thought to do. Stand up and say "NO MORE! NOT HERE!"

Anonymous said...

I agree that although it's wonderful that Bill Thunberg and Frank Rader were swiftly voted out of office, they should still be held accountable for the drastic decisions they made on our behalf. They must be forced to answer for their substantial part in the purchase of a bankrupt cable system which the community unequivocally resisted. It is my understanding that yet another $6 million infusion is now required, and there is no end in sight to this debauchery. Can we not have something similar to the Congressional Hearings of Wall Street executives? Surely there must be some legal recourse for us as taxpayers to demand answers from these two individuals despite the fact that they are no longer in office.

Anonymous said...

You're forgetting about the others who voted to get us into the cable fiasco. Chris Carney voted for it and Mac Herring voted for it. Afterwards, they've all jumped in and voted to keep sinking money into this bottomless pit that has the potential of bankrupting our town. Read my lips. Bankrupting our town.

Anonymous said...

True. But the driving force behind the cable purchase was absolutely Bill Thunberg and Frank Rader. They were feeding false information to the rest of the board, painting a rosy picture, and pretty much duping everybody with Rader's fuzzy math and Thunberg's philosophy talk. Are the others partially responsible? Yes. But Rader and Thunberg were the two who drove this wreck of a train, even dragging out the useless and thankfully former Chamber director Melanie Underwood to bolster their lies in a public meeting. This is all on the record. My question is why? Why did they do this? What was in it for them? Whose pockets were they in?

Anonymous said...

"Citizens for Ethical Treatment of Others" -- sounds a lot like SeaTow -- what boat owners say when their stuck out in the middle of the water and can't get their boat going or they're sinking -- How ironic they chose that acronym! I guess they knew all along they were in a sinking ship.

Anonymous said...

The Investigattons need to keep a close eye on everybody who signed that particular letter for the corrupt former chief of police in case they try to pull another fast one.

Outstanding. Pay attention Donna Swicegood this is what journalism looks like.

Anonymous said...

A little hint, Swicegood waits until she has facts. Unlike this site, remember the Harold Miller Video/story. Heard he still has a good chance in a lawsuit. Oh not to mention the Chris Davidson issue.

Anonymous said...

Swicegood waits until she's told what to write. Investigative reporters go and find the facts -- also known as "scooping" a story. Hell, she spends most of her days in the courthouse -- are you really trying to say she didn't know about this? Please -- neither the R&L or the Tribune print anything which has relevance. I have to go to Davidsonnews.net to find out anything about MI-Connection.

Anonymous said...

I believe printing a story before its true, can end in a bad day. So down her a little more, i mean thats what this website is good for. Should be named, www. i hate redmond and anyone associated with him.com

Anonymous said...

It would be funny if that domain name was ALREADY NOT available.

Anonymous said...

8:18 said, "Swicegood waits until she has facts."

So does Jamie. She published an article about indictments on Crone. Were there indictments? Yes.

"...remember the Harold Miller Video/story. Heard he still has a good chance in a lawsuit."

Again with the lawsuit threats. Go ahead and encourage one. Then Harold, Jamie, the Lincolnton Detective, the guy that was charged with the gift cards and the original video can all be subpoenaed into court. Sounds like a damn good idea.

"Oh not to mention the Chris Davidson issue."

Again, I would love to see Redmond and all involved in court testifying as to what happened that was different then what was said on this blog.

One more thing, nobody here hates Redmond. It is the actions, not the person that is the focus of the anger. I don't think that most of the people on here could give a rats ass what happens to Redmond after he is out of office, they just want him and his ways to be a thing of the past.

So once again you have provoked, threatened and heckled only to turn and play the victim. That is both pitiful and sickening.

Anonymous said...

You are doing a fine job Jamie. Keep it going girl. When is the next article. If I have one complaint against this blog it is that it moves TOO SLOW! I know, you have to have time to get every fact straight and do a quality job. That's why we love you.

So, great job anyway!

"Smoke Signals" by William Stafford in his book of poetry "A Glass Face in the Rain"

"There are people on a parallel way. We do not see them often...but it is precious to us that they are sharing the world. Something about how they have accepted their lives, or how the sunlight happens to them, helps us to hold the strange, enigmatic days in line for our own living. It is important that these people know this recognition, but it also important that no purpose or obligation related to this be intruded into their lives...

Here is a smoke signal, unmistakable but unobtrusive - we are following what comes, going through the world, knowing each other, building our little fires."

Thank you Mrs. Gatton and all other courageous souls who keep the smoke signals going.

11:24 If Redmond or some of his top people were forced to testify in court it would be similar to dragging a vampire into the daylight. They might vaporize or shrivel up. If that didn't get them the "so help me God" would be asking for a lightning strike.

A lawsuit followed by subpoenas would be an amusing and eye opening thing. I wish to hell they would bring a bunch on.

Funny thing because the lawsuit would be against people like you. Let me guess you still dont want to discuss this matter over some dinner. Ok thats what i thought, I will just give up. You like playing hide and go seek to much.
