Fourth candidate joins at-large race

A fourth name has been added to the list of candidates seeking the at-large seat on Mooresville's town board.

Raymond R. Gordner III filed Tuesday afternoon at the Iredell County Elections Office.

He joins three other candidates - Dawn Huston, William H. Washburn II and James Snyder - in the race for the at-large seat. A primary will be held Oct. 11 to narrow the field to the two top vote getters. Those two candidates will then vie for the seat in the Nov. 8 general election.

Mooresville's town board has two at-large seats but only one is up for election this year. The seat is currently being occupied by Miles Atkins who is running for mayor. Also running for mayor: Jared Esselman.

The seats for commissioners of Wards 1 and 2 are also up for election this year. So far, incumbents Mitch Abraham and Thurman Houston (respectively) have filed for re-election and are running unopposed.

The filing period ends Aug. 12 at noon.

Are commissioners paid? If so, what's the salary?

Yes, they are paid, actually. Funny you ask; someone had asked me that earlier today. I'll check on it and get back to you asap. Thanks for the question!

Seems like $8,000 annually? Mayor Pro-tem a little more, Mayor around $12,000. Not exact about that but its in the ballpark.

That sounds about right. I think. I sent a message to the town clerk yesterday; as soon as I hear back, I'll post it here.

Okay, here's what I got from the town clerk:

In salaries, the mayor makes $10,065 per year. Mayor Pro tem makes $6,842 a year, and commissioners make $6,083 a year.

And here's what insurance costs the town: For an elected official only, the cost of health insurance is $509 a month. Insurance for a public official and children is $707. The town's cost is $749 a month for an official and spouse. For a family, the cost is $991.

The town pays $32.64 a month in dental insurance and $5.61 in vision insurance for an official who is insured through the town.

Human Resources is closed today, but the town clerk said she'll get back to me next week on which officials are currently insured through the town and what the officials pay toward their insurance costs.

Hope that helps, and let me know if there's anything else I can track down for you!

I may be wrong but I think that the Mayor gets a travel expense that is not included in his salary. Also the Commissioners get mileage when they use their own car I have heard. Can you check on this and see which ones are doing this if any?
