Evidence room error destroys property and raises questions

The evidence room at the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office has problems.

Less than two years ago, Sheriff Phil Redmond told the Statesville Record & Landmark that “the smallest scrap of paper and a vehicle merit the same detailed accounting process” in the evidence room. "We have multiple checks and balances to make sure everything is done properly," he told the newspaper.

But at some point between November 2007 and March 2010, the sheriff’s office, in violation of state law, destroyed personal property belonging to Statesville resident Robert Goforth.

Over the course of five different incidents since 2003, Goforth has had thousands of dollars worth of items stolen from buildings on his East Iredell property, from antique, solid-oak furniture and other household items to engines, farming equipment and tools.

Some of the property has been recovered and returned to Goforth. Some of it was logged in as evidence at the sheriff’s office pending resolution of the cases. And some of the people who were convicted for the break-ins have been ordered to pay restitution to Goforth, although he said he has not received a penny of the restitution to date.

And now, Goforth is expecting a restitution payment – up to $3,715 – from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office itself, after it destroyed, without a court order, items that had been seized in connection with the break-ins and were supposed to be stored for safe-keeping as evidence until the court cases were resolved.

Those items (from two different break-ins, one in 2003 and the other in 2005) include what Goforth calls “odd-ball antiques and collectibles” – all family heirlooms – including tools, a Surge Milker, a cream separator and a Weeden No. 32 Eureka steam engine, which Goforth said was a metal engine made before World War I.

But perhaps the biggest personal loss to Goforth was a plastic, battery-powered M14 rifle that he received for Christmas from his grandparents when he was a boy.

Goforth remembers being enamored at the time with the black-and-white television series “Combat!” about “World War II dogfaces in Germany,” Goforth said. Being the craze at the time, toy companies manufactured children’s toys after the series, including play sets, coloring books and games.

Goforth remembers the Combat! M14 rifle being among the most coveted of the Combat! toys. Being from a poor family, Goforth recalls wanting the toy rifle when he was in the first grade, but he didn’t expect to receive it when he asked for it for Christmas that year. But to his surprise and delight, his grandparents bought it for him. “It was one of the biggest prizes,” Goforth said, becoming emotional.

“I took good care of it all those years,” he said. “When you’re poor, you take good care of things. We learned that if you can’t take care of what you’ve got, you won’t get anything else.”

Goforth said he was ecstatic when he learned that the sheriff’s office had recovered the stolen toy rifle from one of the initial break-ins and had it safely stored in the evidence room. “I was so thankful that was found and identified. I was really longing for the day to get that back.”

But Goforth would never see the toy again.

In November, Goforth visited the sheriff’s office to pick up items from the fifth and most recent break-in. While there, he said he asked Property and Evidence Staff Sgt. Darlene Wells about items that deputies had retrieved from prior break-ins and had stored in the evidence room. Goforth told the Report this week that he had asked the sheriff's office to notify him when the cases were resolved so he could retrieve his personal property, but he never received such notification.

On March 2, the District Attorney’s office drafted a letter, which Goforth took to the sheriff’s office, saying any property belonging to Goforth and still in the possession of the sheriff’s office could be released. The letter, signed by Assistant District Attorney Mikko Red Arrow, stated that the property “was no longer needed by the District Attorney’s Office and may be returned to the lawful owner(s).”

Upon being provided the letter from the DA’s office, Wells looked for Goforth’s property in the evidence room, Goforth said. He said she found the “paper trail” for the property, but could not find the property itself.

At that time, Goforth said he approached Donna Swicegood with the Statesville Record & Landmark, which had previously written the story about the security systems governing the evidence room, asking the newspaper to look into the matter. An article was never written.

Meanwhile, Goforth was contacted by Lt. Andy Poteat, who had apparently been assigned to the case of the missing evidence. Poteat broke the news to Goforth that the sheriff’s office had destroyed his property.

In a recent telephone conversation between Goforth and Poteat, a recording of which can be accessed via the link on this page, Poteat said he had “talked with the folks [at the sheriff’s office] about it, and the lady confirmed, ‘Yeah, my signature’s on it. It was destroyed.’

“So that’s all I’ve had to go on,” Poteat told Goforth. “They didn’t say anything about a court order. They said it was destroyed. That’s why they signed off on it.”

Poteat acknowledged that the sheriff’s office destroyed the evidence without a court order. Said Goforth: “They did not follow procedures of law.”

Referencing the toy rifle in his conversation with Poteat, Goforth said: “For that to be foolishly destroyed, especially without a court order, is really a grievous thing for me.” He added that the steam engine “was something that was given to me by my father who’s no longer living.”

Poteat said that he was ordered by Chief Deputy Rick Dowdle to find out from Goforth the value of the items that were destroyed so the sheriff’s office could make restitution.

Goforth said the monetary value of the items is secondary to the sentimental value that the items held. And no amount of money can make up for that, he told the Report.

Goforth told the sheriff’s office his destroyed property was worth $3,715. Goforth compiled a list of the items, along with their value, and had it notarized before submitting it to the sheriff’s office earlier this week. He is currently awaiting his restitution payment. As of today, he has not received it.

Goforth, in his conversation with Poteat, asked from what type of fund the restitution would be paid.

“You’re asking questions that I don’t know the answer to,” Poteat said. “That’s not my territory. Matter of fact, this is the first time I’ve ever dealt with anything like this. And the only reason that I got involved was they asked me to look into it to see what was going on, if I could figure it out, and I did the best I could to come up with what I can, but I wasn’t part of the cases. I didn’t turn the stuff in way-back-when, with the exception of the three nut drivers. Well actually I just handed those to another detective that did. That’s neither here nor there.”

Poteat is referencing the initial break-in at Goforth’s. Poteat himself signed the paperwork on the evidence logged by the sheriff’s office from that 2003 break-in – three Craftsman nut drivers. Those tools were among Goforth’s destroyed property; all the other property that the sheriff’s office destroyed was from a break-in two years later, in 2005.

When Goforth provided the combined total of $3,715 in losses to Poteat in the telephone conversation last week, Poteat said: “I will pass this figure on to Chief Dowdle. And I guess I’ll call you back. Or better yet, I’ll ask him to call you back, maybe. Whichever way he wants to do it. He might tell … well anyway, I’ll wait and see what he tells me and I’ll be back in touch with you.”

Poteat assured Goforth that “whatever happened” to the property, “it wasn’t the detectives. It happened in the evidence room, and that’s where the mistake is, and I sincerely hope the folks are gonna fix this.

“Actually,” Poteat added, “it has already been fixed because none of them are working there anymore. But still, that’s neither here nor there and I hope my bosses do what they can to correct any problems there, prevent any future issues. But, I think they will actually.”

Goforth told the Report that he is disheartened by the actions of the sheriff’s office. “They are in charge of taking care of people,” he said.

Goforth shared with Poteat his suspicion that “someone [at the sheriff’s office] had helped themselves to my stuff.” Said Goforth: “I would rather have my stuff back, and – I don’t know – I’ve just got a bad feeling. I think somebody just helped themselves to my stuff, actually, more than it being destroyed. But that’s just my opinion, but I don’t know.”

Replied Poteat: “Well, like I said, I’m just going by what I can find, and everything I can find – the paperwork – it says it was destroyed. I’m just going by the computer so that’s where I stand on that one.”

Poteat added to Goforth: “Actually, I was hoping I would find your stuff too. I was hoping somebody made just a typo and it was in a corner somewhere. But in no accounts can I find anything.”

In August 2008, the Town of Mooresville Police Department was embroiled in controversy over a deposit slip with a handwritten note showing that the police department – then under Chief John Crone – had deposited “loose change” from the evidence room into the department’s Cops for Kids account.

At that time, the Statesville Record & Landmark published an article that addressed the “multiple layers of safeguards” in place at the sheriff’s office and the Statesville Police Department.

Redmond cited the “multiple checks and balances” in the evidence room. Interestingly, however, he said that those “checks and balances” are exactly what “helped uncover improper procedures in (the) handling of some surrendered weapons.”

A date for that incident was not provided in the article, but it states that “the weapons were handed over by their owner to a deputy, who didn't follow the right procedures in submitting those weapons to the evidence room.” Redmond said the guns “were not evidence in any case.” However, he told the newspaper, “those procedures still needed to be followed.”

The referenced deputy was not named in the article; however, Redmond told the newspaper that the deputy “got in trouble because it wasn’t handled properly.”

According to the Record & Landmark article, Redmond said “it was the tight set of regulations for handling evidence that brought” that particular situation to light. “And changes were made,” the newspaper reported.

Those changes didn’t help prevent the improper (and probably illegal) destruction of Robert Goforth’s property. And that raises a number of questions: what procedures are in place at the sheriff’s evidence room? Why and how did they break down in this case? And how much other property, if any, has been wrongly destroyed or otherwise disappeared from the sheriff’s evidence room?

My gosh that is awful. That man had things stolen that cannot be replaced. He was fortunate enough that the thieves were caught and his precious items recovered, only to have them reportedly destroyed by the Sheriffs office.

It would appear that there is a good chance that they weren't destroyed. If his belongings were valuable enough for someone to steal, they were certainly worthy of being returned to the owner. I think he may be justified in believing that someone helped themselves to his belongings.

I am glad they are offering to give him financial reimbursement but that will not make up for the sentimental value. I also have concerns about the remaining evidence that belongs to people and that which may be crucial to a serious case. Almost $4000 worth of belongings is a lot to lose. It sounds like this needs some more investigating.

Mr. Goforth if you read this, I am very sorry for your loss.

Mr Goforth the staff sgt darlene wells is not a sworn officer and can't even take drugs to the sbi lab or wherever the narcotics get desposed of unless she has a sworn officer with her,wow from answering the phone at the jail to staff sgt,,try talking to the county manager and steve johnson about this problem, not donna swicegood she's a sheriffs dept fan,,good luck

I think the Record & Landmark needs to hire some new investigative reporters. Donna Swicegood does not do her job to ask questions and report as she should. What has our county came to!

I don't quite get how things from 2 different cases 2 years apart all got destroyed. Is there anybody who can explain this? Did everything all get destroyed at the same time even though the cases were 2 years apart? Maybe this is normal but it does not make sense to me.

Jamie,

Who was in charge of the evidence room during this time? Were they following the protocols that are supposed to be used? Sounds like whoever was supposed to be running that evidence room could be losing their job. Also, How did you go about getting this story?

Trish said...

Yea Gatton, how dare you write this story without telling us where you got it!!!!!!! I wonder if Mr. Goforth maybe heard about the BLOG after the paper in STATESVILLE never wrote a story??? Maybe 9:03 has something more conspiracy for us to buy!!! I'm rubbing my hands together for this one!!

I would be willing to bet 5 dollars to a hole in a doughnut that your questions will be answered soon 9:03. Next time don't ask them under a veiled attempt to discredit Gatton for writing this article.

Thank you for the information, Gatton.

The Sheriff is in charge of the evidence room at all times. So it sounds to me that 9:03 PM is absolutely on track. The Sheriff should be losing his job. Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that the Chief of Police here was fired even though nobody ever accused him of being the actual one that moved the money from the evidence room into the C4K account? I take my notes from that case. In the workforce, if an employee does something wrong that was supervised by somebody else, the supervisor gets in trouble too. Put the blame on whoever you wish but the Top Dog is ultimately responsible. This problem runs deep and it goes all the way to the Top.

Ditto Mooresville, I was just getting ready to say the same thing until I read your post.

Sheriff Redmond has never been held accountable for anything. People under him may take a fall, but he stays insulated. His first answer to everything is I didn't know anything about it.

He actually knows everything that goes on because he pitches one emmortal fit if he finds out about it later.

Mr. Goforth was very kind in his treatment of this situation. I don't think I could have been as calm. I have things that my Father passed on to me that are not replaceable. In this case the victim had something that belonged to him since the first grade that his grandparents gave him. The show he was referring to was on TV in the early sixties so that would mean that he has treasured that Christmas gift for around forty five years. I just don't think I could react as calmly as he has. I probably would have hemmed the Sheriff up alone for a word of prayer.

This is the very reason why we need a new Sheriff in Iredell county.....It make me wonder what else is missing or so called been destroyed from behind the locked doors of the Sheriff office...I can understand Drugs & Firearms being destroyed but items like this no way....I have been to a number of auctions that the Sheriff's offices has had in the past and items like this is what was sold to be a little more descriptive about what was sold in the auctions I have seen light for growing pot sold at the sheriffs auctions and they destroyed Mr Goforth stuff. This is the biggest load of crap I ever heard...If you ssk me I would bet my hat that the items in questions could be found in in someone home that works at the Sheriff office...

lets see, its amazing how this just now comes out. Also how he mentions mark nicholson, kinda weird. But at the same time i believe nicholsons biggest supporter ducks wife is the one who signed off on it to be distroyed. Because she was over evidence.

Wow that is some crazy stuff, sounds like someone needs to be investigating everyone who worked in the evidence room for the past ten years

Anonymous said...

Never known anyone beeing sued for reporting the truth

Anonymous said...

Seems to me that the SBI needs to be talking to Redmond who is responsible for finding out what happened. He sure knew out about Adams and what did the SBI do about that?

Redmond cited the “multiple checks and balances” in the evidence room. Interestingly, however, he said that those “checks and balances” are exactly what “helped uncover improper procedures in (the) handling of some surrendered weapons.”

A date for that incident was not provided in the article, but it states that “the weapons were handed over by their owner to a deputy, who didn't follow the right procedures in submitting those weapons to the evidence room.”

The thing is, somebody will try to place this on the evidence room techs like is already beginning, but they follow orders like everybody else.

I had heard awhile back from a whole bunch of people that a very large amount of money was missing, then it just got quiet. I am sure there is more than one victim of "destroyed property" and much more than these items missing. How many people have access to the evidence room?

As has been said before, this is what started things here in Mooresville. It is time that we get involved and show the county people how to get rid of corruption. If it doesn't end, I'm coming back down here to work.

Anonymous said...

So you are saying Mr Goforth is lieing

Anonymous said...

This is ridiculous? Evidence from different break ins was destroyed instead of being given back to the victim. I wonder if Mr. Goforth would agree that this is rediculous?

Anonymous said...

pretty sure this thing was set up perfectly. yall boys bring out some stupid tricks. im saying this should have came out along time ago. If he was that worried about it

10:42 Did you read the part where he has been trying to get his stuff back for a long time and went to the Record & Landfill and then the DA's office and then had to go through the Poteat guy? The man has been busy jumping through hoops for a long time and he just now got the answer that his stuff was "destroyed". If you don't like the timing, talk to the people at the Sheriffs Office. This is Crone all over again.

Anonymous said...

The victim is facing possibly getting money for stuff that was not replaceable. He still hasn't seen that.

Also notice how Dowdle was mentioned but never talked to the victim? That is a fine example of the leadership we have. Good leadership would have been the Sheriff himself going TO the victim and apologizing trying to make things right.

But no, they put it all off on Andy Poteat who is trying to put it off on the evidence room techs who follow guidelines set up by the so called leaders of the department which would be Dowdle and the Sheriff.

So we are once again we are back to the $3,715 question; where were they when this man's belongings were discovered missing? Why didn't they go out of their way to meet him and try to make something right?

As we say in law enforcement, Only the guilty flee when no man pursueth.

Here you go again trying to bring Nicholson into it.

Well, now that I think about it I think I read in the paper or heard somewhere that he has said that he knows where the problems are in the Sheriff's Department and he knows how to fix them. I think he said he is running against his boss because there are things that need to be changed. This is a fine example of a problem at the sheriff's department. Wonder what other problems there are. Weren't some of the other blogs about things missing in the evidence room and the Redmond supports told everyone that these were vicious lies made up by the Nicholson camp.

I know I heard that Nicholson said that if he was fortunate enougth to get elected sheriff the first thing he would do was have the evidence room pad locked and an outsider do a complete audit.

NICHOLSON FOR SHERIFF HE KNOWS WHERE THE PROBLEMS ARE AND HOW TO FIX THEM.

What difference does it make who handeled the cases , there were more than one. The evidence was logged into the evidence room and then distroyed according to the audio from Andy Poteat. Distroyed illegally.

Where does the money that they are going to pay Mr. Goforth come from. If someone got a 50,000 dollar item stolen from their home and it is recovered and then distroyed by the evidence room. What pot of money does this come from.

How many other people that we don't know about have had this same thing happen to them and where did the money come to pay them?

The citizens deserve to know and Statesville record and landmark needs an overhaul.

Don't re elect Redmond.

Apparently it is broken and it needs fixing.

What we cannot forget is the true victim in this story and potentially many other victims in our beloved county. It is not their fault that their items were stolen. How insulting it must be to have their property stolen by thieves only to be destroyed by people who have taken an oath to protect and serve and I agree with the other poster who said that this situation deserved a personal visit to this victim by the Sheriff not a phone call from a another officer. GO REDMOND show these ass holes !!!!

Anonymous said...

Yeah 5:34, everybody is out to get Redmond. Poor Redmond. Just like he "let" Nicholson saty on working there out of the kindness of his heart. Right?

Do you know he sat in the squad room with his lip stuck out telling officers that Mark didn't even have the decency to quit or come tell him?

Do you know that he has been going around the county pouting to people about how Mark decided to run against him? All for sympathey. Do you know that he told at least one person that he wouldn't fire Mark even if he did get re-elected because Mark is his best detective?

Amazing how a man so self centered, mean and vindictive can play the victim when around the right people.

Now about this evidence room; this is not the first time that somebody's belongings have come up "destroyed". There have also been instances of officers selling items that came from the evidence room. The evidence room has apparently been used as a private shopping mall for a few select and a assure you that it was not the female evidence tech that they are trying to pin it on. Nor was it the other evidence tech that retired out. Both are honest as the day is long.

There was a tech before that however that was there when some major funds came up missing who got "moved". That same tech was reportedly selling firearms out of the trunk of his car. Unfortunately the witnesses are afraid to talk like in all the other cases against Redmond and his inner circle.

Another individual got charged with some serious drug charges, has served his time and straightened his life out. He says that they got him fair and square, he had it coming. He doesn't deny that. Only problem he has is that they confiscated his guns, a couple of which were given to him by his grandpa. He had his attorney contact the Sheriffs Office to see if there was anyway that those couple of firearms could be released to family members. His attorney called back and said they couldn't find them. They had been "destroyed".

That sounds reasonable, guns in a drug case ordered destroyed. Only one major problem; it was before he had even gone to court and been found guilty. His attorney doesn't want to be involved and he is scared to come forward.

In my opinion based on a steady flow of information, Redmond and his inner circle are running a criminal enterprise.

There is much, much more. One guy hopes that Redmond will get out because he is tired of having to give Redmond an envelope to keep him off his back. Again, scared to talk. It needs to stop folks!

I got a call this morning to look on here and was grateful to see this article. Thank goodness this one victim was not afraid to talk. Hopefully this will encourage others to tell their stories which will then become indictments and cases. Justice needs to visit Iredell County and the Iredell County Sheriffs Office needs new leadership.

5:34am it would have been nice if the Sheriff gave Goforth the story, then maybe none of this wouldn't have happened. He wouldn't have had to got to Donna Swicegood who essentially covered it up by not reporting on it or giving it to someone else. He wouldn't have had to go to the DA's office and he wouldn't have had to go to the Gatton Report. Also when you say show these assholes, I am sure that in your Redmond supporting mind that Goforth is the biggest asshole since he started all of this by being brave enough to demand that he be heard by somebody and that the Sheriff answer for the activity that he allows to take place by a few in his inner circle.

PENSACOLA — U.S. District Judge Lacey Collier minced no words Tuesday in sentencing former Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris to 71 months in prison.

“You have tarnished the badge of every law enforcement officer in this entire area, and for this you must bear responsibility,” Collier said.

Morris was arrested Feb. 27 in Las Vegas. He was charged with and eventually pleaded guilty to conspiring with his administrative director, Teresa Adams, to create an employee bonus kickback scheme that put thousands of dollars in his pocket.

Lawmen said he spent much of the kickback money on gambling excursions.

He also used the money to lavish gifts upon a girlfriend who was employed at the Sheriff’s Office but had no apparent duties.

Mike Stewart, a former Sheriff’s Office sergeant fired by Morris, also attended.

Stewart, terminated in 1999 after an investigation failed to clear him of allegations he’d had sex with a high school intern, gathered all the media around him that he could to denounce his former boss.

(Somebody accused of something they didn't do and was fired while the administration and inner circle was deep in illegal activity.)

“He’s always been a con man,” Stewart said. “It finally caught up to him. His apology today didn’t seem real to me. He was apologizing because he got caught.”

Hensel, the prosecutor, said he hoped the sentence helps Okaloosa residents regain their faith in law enforcement.

“We think this prosecution helps reaffirm that no one is above the law,” he said.

(And finally the last line.)

He also credited the Sheriff’s Office workers who put their jobs on the line to help topple Morris.

“We salute those in the department who had the courage to come forward,” he said.

That sounds like a Iredell County problem

K. Overton said...

I feel so bad for the Goforth gentleman who lost his family treasures. Some things can't be replaced. I hope that there will be an investigation into how the Sheriff operates his department. I have seen so many accusations on here that are very disturbing. The Sheriff seems to be a good guy. His comment at the beginning of this article is very reassuring when he said that a scrap of paper and a car are both just as important and that he has many ways that they double check to make sure things are done right. I was convinced over the years that he was doing a professional job and that things being said about him were not true. Now I think that the public and myself deserve some reassurance from someone other than the Sheriff.

Anonymous said...

It is an Iredell County problem. Mooresville, Statesville, Troutman and every other town or city in Iredell County is served by the Sheriff in one way or another.

I think maybe we need to take to the streets ike we did here in Mooresville. Let's show people how we get rid of corruption.

Anonymous said...

This is a very bad thing that happened to Mr. Goforth. I think the Sheriff Himself and the Chief Dep. should have gone to Mr. Goforth in person and tell the truth... that someone made a mistake. They are the ones in charge and where the buck stops. Don't have someone else do the dirty work for you Phillip, or is that all you know how to do.

Anonymous said...

I think if the entire incident was a mistake that the Sheriff may have been able to explain. The problem is that this has the potential to have other people come forward and he wants to remain distant from the whole thing.

You can't be indicted for what you (pretend)you don't know.

Anonymous said...

Oh - but he does know (pretend is the right word 9:36). Bring in the SBI or the Whistleblower and lets see what happens. Better do it fast though before the Redmonettes find a way to cover stuff up.

Joey C said...

Who was in charge of the evidence room between November 2007 and March 2010? That is the question I would like to have the answer to! The Sheriff should fire whoever it was!

7:42 am,
Do you know the evidence techs? If so what are their names, and how do you know how honest they are?

Anonymous said...

AUDIT ! AUDIT ! FROM AN OUTSIDE SOURCE -

Anonymous said...

Maybe the missing evidence is buried with the asbestos from the renovated prison camp.

Anonymous said...

Joey C you are only trying to keep this off of Redmond. I don't think you want to try to pin this on any evidence techs and back them in a corner to where they start talking. Better rethink your strategy.

Anonymous said...

The sheriff can't be responsible for everything. Just like Nicholson said, surrond youself with people to do the job. The sheriff should FIRE the evidence techs. Sounds like they are the weak link!! I wonder who gave Jamie the idea for this story....OH I JUST WONDER!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Joey ill tell you who they were, julie wyatt, and phil holler. Both of which support nicholson, isn't that odd. Just put all the pieces together. How this tape just came out, and mr goforth prasing nicholson on it. Seems to me they had this planned from the day the evidence got distroyed. Duck I can't believe you let your boys hang your wife like this.

Anonymous said...

why didn't ducky boy ever get charged for all those bogus concealed carry classes he did.

Anonymous said...

Smell the desperation. Let's get back to the topics here. Missing personal belongings from the evidence room. Missing funds. A Sheriff who used the Redmond and Landfill and his personal reporter Donna Swicegood to write a story about how he claims to know where every piece of scrap paper is but hasn't shown his hairy face to explain what happened to $3700 worth of stuff. Buried asbestos and much much more. I think the evidence techs are errelavant at this point unless you want to discuss the one who got moved after money turned up missing, reportedly $10,000.

Anonymous said...

I don't think that the Sheriff wants anything mentioned about the concealed carry classes. Might want to leave that one alone Sherlock Redmond.

Anonymous said...

Are the evidence techs the only persons allowed access to the evidence room ?

Anonymous said...

Well the crazy part is everytime I say some facts, you throw up rumors. If you no so much sounds like you must have been caught with your hand in the cookie jar. Who is this again fromme, or wallace

Anonymous said...

Bogus concealed carry classes ? How can that be?
What else is being concealed that the public should know about ?

Anonymous said...

everyone knows about the bougs classes including the DA

Anonymous said...

Duck scammed everyone, and that can't come back to the sheriff bc he's had it out for him for like ever. Duck could have caused everyone to be arrested that got one. That's the only reason he hasn't been charged. In order to charge him everyone would be charged.

Anonymous said...

i hear there may be a class action law suit against little ducky boy.

Anonymous said...

There days are coming don't worry. Good thing is most of them liars dontg even no what's getting ready to hit them. That's the funny part. So nicholson get your boys ready

Anonymous said...

You are a bunch of idiots. You jump on the first thing that appears obvious. I have been watching these posts to see how it played out. Pretty funny that so many assumptions have been made based on obvious facts. Allow me to throw in another fact that hasn't been considered.

Robert Goforth and Jeff Cheek are cousins of some degree. When trying to find someone to blame, you first have to realize that you are to blame for not being on the up and up. After that if you still have no recourse but to try and pass the buck, at least put some thought into it. You already look stupid. No need making it worse.

As for the threat to Nicholsons boys, I know them all pretty well, as you do and have for a long time. Be careful who you kick in the ass or even threaten to kick in the ass. There are several in that group that don't have a back up gear once pushed past their limit. Just some friendly advice, do what you need to do.

Everybody knowing Redmond like they do I am sure they are poised and ready to respond.

Anonymous said...

Where are the Redmonettes today? Everybody busy in the evidence room trying to cover up or wiping the sweat off Redmond & Dowdle ?

Anonymous said...

Well lets just say all those people who got scammed over ducks little deal. Want be supporting who he is supporting. Because they no how he opperates. He pretty much set them up for failure. One quote he said best to describe him, if you have to kill someone call me ill tell you how to word it. Is that the kinda of people you want running this county. To all you rumor factory workers dont you remember a guy named hege from davidson county. He had enough money to pay all of washington off, but that still didnt get him from being caught. So if the Sheriff did make a mistake he would have been caught by now. Matter of fact last time i heard, he had been investagated 50 some times because people call the fbi with rumors. Not once has any Redmond supporter threw nicholsons past, and family in this. If you have lived, you have dirt. If you think you dont thats were your wrong. Thats why we have a man called a savior.

Anonymous said...

To 11:36

I have heard the sheriff likes to play dirty. I have noticed that alot of Nicholson signs have started to disappear. Wonder what the sheriff has planned for them.

Maybe he will put one in front of a drug house some of his boys are planning on raiding before tuesday. Then Donna Swicegood can come and take a picture of it for the front page of the Record and Landmark

Anonymous said...

1:57

You are absolutly right everyone makes mistakes. But in your post you imply that Redmond has not because he has been investigated 50 times and nothing happened.

Redmond has made mistakes in his life, Nicholson has made mistakes in his life, Cheek, Blocker and Stamey have made mistakes in their lives.

There is a difference thought in making a mistake owning up to it and trying to make it right as apposed to trying to cover it up and never admit it.

There is also a difference between making honest mistakes in life as we all do and a lifestyle of choosing the wrong side.

Anonymous said...

well, at least hege worked to get his picture in the paper, he wasn't scared to make a vehicle stop ,wsic reports-sheriff phil redmond stated: hell thats on all the press releases, the sheriff wouldn't know what to state unless someone told him what to say, fact fact fact

I never stated Redmond never made mistakes. I said everyone makes mistakes. Its the lords job to judges us, its our right to vote. You dont have to bash someone, just vote for your choice. But its clear Nicholsons supporters wanted to run a smear campaign. Just like Steve Benfield, and look what happened at election time. I feel for people who have to make someone else look bad, in order to get attention or a vote. Be sure Nicholson trembles wondering if yall will turn on him if he is elected.

Anonymous said...

Im pretty sure that yall have bashed the sheriff for getting to many press releases. So i guess he is in a lose lose situation with you and the others. I mean yall cant win for sticking your foot in your mouth just like Nicholson. Someone needs to tape your mouths. Like Nicholsons statement, The sheriffs office is like running a household. I dont no to many households with close 300 people, and an 18 million dollar budget.

Heard oh nicholsons aunts up at the board of elections harassing people. Telling them stuff about Redmonds mom. What does that have to do with an election. It would seem impossible for an antique motor, weighing several hundred pounds, to be accidentally destroyed. Outright theft seems to be the better answer. It would appear that there are a lot more problems in the evidence room than just this incident. The Iredell County Commissioners, yes that's you Steve Johnson and Marvin Norman, should demand of the Sheriff that he conduct an independent audit of his evidence room by a third party. That's the only way this situation will be put to rest. County Manager Joel Mashburn, I'm not letting you off the hook either. Your office oversees county monies, demand of the Sheriff that an outside audit be conducted. How can the citizens of this county have any trust in any one of you unless you do your job.

Demanding

I know most of these people named here personally. I am amazed to see and hear the bashing that is happening here. One one hand it really makes me wonder if it is any of the people I know posting. On the other, I am sure most are from a week minded person who does not have the guts to carry the sign of whichever candidate he/she is supporting and talk about the positives of his/her candidate. I don't care who all you people vote for, Just Vote!!
I for one already have voted. So I will not side with any candidate as my vote is already cast.
I will add my last thought: I really think it be only a few insecure people who feel the need to bash others, threaten law suits, talking about supporters to belittle a candidate is petty at least. It is obvious as no arrests have been publicized that none of you throwing the pissy comments have done it to someone's face. So that tells me and the others ready here what kind of people you are.
Really what does any of the names you drag onto this post other than Jamie Gatton, Donna Swicegood, Phil Redmond, Andy Poteat, Darlene Wells, and Rick Dowdle have to do with this man's property being lost/destroyed?

Anonymous said...

I really wanna know why is the SBI/FBI not here investigating this? Did anyone call them? We all know I think that Redmond did not do anything with the property. But it sure confirms to me he is more interested in being a politician instead of being a man of integrity. A man of integrity would have determined why the property is not on hand and the explained in detail to the victim. A politician says send an unqualified person to look into it. As he is not qualified he accuses others and then lies to the victim then passes the buck as facts questioned are beyond his intelligence and pay grade. Finally lets use taxpayer money to make the victim go away.
I mean really if you think of it what a brilliant plan. As normally you only have one angry victim, and the rest of the public thinks you did a wonderful job as you have used this victim to make you property recovery higher and clear more cases. Where is the paper trail? That would tell us who authorized the destruction if indeed there was one. Other wise why is the SBI/FBI not here looking to arrest the guilty people! That would then force the politician to explain to the public how he really chooses to hire these people who are not doing their job.

Demanding, you're right on the money. I don't belive that Redmond, Wells or Dowdle stole anything. However, willful blindness by high ranking officials is no defense. It would appear that that the poor Poteat guy got put into the middle of a situation he had nothing to do with. This ABSOLUTELY needs to be investigated by a THIRD PARTY. I also agree with Demanding that our County Commissioners and the County Manager need to demand of the Sheriff that an outside investigation be done. I don't like my tax dollars being used to pay off theft by a county employee. I'd like to know from which fund this money came. Issues at the Sheriff's Office never seem to stop. I've always supported Redmond and believe that he's done a good job, but this situation cannot be overlooked.

Anonymous said...

The real story is, that the 3 people who knew of the guns that Tommy Adams "didn't turn in" were all forced out of there positions within the evidence department a few months of each other. I personally don't believe this man's property was taking but mistakely destroyed. As I understand it the officer has to sign off on something being destroyed, so why would anyone just get rid of something for the hell of it. Sounds to me like the paper trail just wasn't found by the current evidence tech who I read earlier was not an officer and inexperienced.

Anonymous said...

How hard is it to ask the person that signed off on the destruction of the motor, where and how was it destroyed. That should be easy to follow up, even if they don't work there anymore. Did they take it to Gordon's? I'm saying bullshit.

Anonymous said...

Demanding at 6:45 PM... I am on your side so don't take this wrong. I am one of those who "slings mud and makes up rumors just to make Redmond look bad." Or so I am accused.

Anyway, just wanted to clarify something since I actually am interested in the truth across the board.

I did a search on the Weeden Steam engine. It isn't a large heavy engine of several hundred pounds, it is a small working replica that was designed for youth ages. I wanted to clarify that to keep the issues factual.

The value of course is priceless since his father gave it to him and he is no longer living. If it was manufactured in the last year it was made it would still be 83 years old making it even more valuable and irreplaceable.

Too bad Redmond is not the kind of man we need as Sheriff or he would have met with the man personally to make things as good as he could.

Instead they Redmond and Dowdle) put Andy Poteat in the middle and will probably try to stick this on an evidence tech who was following protocal set up by the department which is supposedly run under the superior supervisory skills of Redmond the great and Ricky Doodle who works from the Wallace Springs Sheriffs Annex.

I assure you that neither of them, especially the Sheriff will take responsibility for any of this. They are in charge until something goes wrong and then they don't know anything about it.

Anonymous said...

Wallace Springs Sheriffs Annex ? what is that?

Anonymous said...

What is Wallace Springs Sheriffs Annex ?

Anonymous said...

You know damn well what it is.

Anonymous said...

What does Tommy Adams have to do with this story? I am confused I guess. He is the one the SBI and the Sheriff's Training and Standards all cleared of any wrongdoing right? So what is your point about him?

Anonymous said...

As complicated and liable as evidence is, Why is there no video to prove who took it out of the evidence room? Where is the paper trail or did the paper disappear too?
Sounds to me like they had a layman doing an investigator's job. Well maybe he was not specialized enough to handle a simple job. Show me all the papers, now I see where it is. Pretty Simple ain't it?

Did someone not mention on the blog months ago there was stuff missing in evidence? Larry Green wanted proof - is this proof? Now can someone audit or step forward to prove there is missing murder case evidence? How many more screw ups need to be proved before there is an outside audit?

Anonymous said...

Larry Green AKA The Reverend Snoop Blog. Interesting how he jumped all up in this thing, sided up with Redmond, blasted all of those who were trying to get information out and then went away. Can't say that I know what to make of that. He sure got on Crone and rode his ass right out of town.

I guess like a few others he got awestruck with Philfever. Or did he decide that this was too much for him? That's probably it. All the accusations he called rumors kept mounting up until they were too many with too many details to ignore. So, now here is the proof of the evidence room not being run correctly under Redmond's guidance and has been pointed out, the Rev Snoop Blog is no where to be found.

Larry Green said...

Rev Snoop Blog -- interesting. It was simple to approach the Crone situation because of other events for which I had personal knowledge and evidence.

I haven't had a chance to read through the article and listen to the recording, so at this point I don't have a particular position on Redmond or this particular allegation -- not that my opinion matters for anything.

Like I do for anything, I'll look into it and see what I can find out -- but I doubt I will find out anything more than what Jaime can find out.

Anonymous said...

It sure didn't take you long to take a one sided approach on the last issue. People with years of knowledge about the workings of the Sheriffs office were posting information to the best of their ability only to have you shoot it down as rumors and unfounded accusations.

Every major investigation into law enforcement starts out with anonymous information for two reasons. Number one: legitamate concern forretaliation in various forms. Number two; concern of being labeled a "snitch" even thought the activities may be illegal and in some cases totally corrupt.

If you would like to take an interest in this again, sit back and read through everything and start putting pieces together. On Tuesday if Redmond is voted out you can look for a tsunami of information to be headed for Statesville.

In the meantime, look, listen and ask around before expressing your opinion. You may begin to see things in a different light.

There are hundreds of people who have heard it from the witnesses, but the witnesses won't talk to authorities and the people they told it to respect them enough not to betray their confidence. From Sheriff Redmonds Facebook page:

TUESDAY MAY 4, 2010 is a very important day for this county. Remember to vote for me as your Sheriff. I and my wonderful staff and communty leaders have brought us into the 21st century with technology. I will continue to serve you and together we can continue to reduce the crime in Iredell County. We must maintain our professionalism even when we are attacked by bloggers. Thank you for your continued support.

It pathetic that Redmond has been reduced to playing the sympathy card. Especially since their first and primary poster "Bulldozer" started the "attack" on the very first online article about the Sheriffs race. Here is that post: (link above if you want to verify it.)

Posted by (Bulldozer) on 02/11/2010 at 10:35 am.

Muddy—I am sure Mark is a young sweet guy, but I have friends in the law enforcement community that tell me that he left years ago came back was hired again by the Sheriff because of tough times. I have been told that he has never been involved in Narcotics investigations, and has never even been a supervisor. I have been told the Sheriff’s Office hear is one of the most aggressive on drug dealers and thugs in the state. I would hate to give this up to someone who just decided he thought it would be fun to be Sheriff. I think it says a lot about the Sheriff Redmond, Nicholson takes a paycheck home and would then cut him in the back to run against him….it says a lot about the Sheriff that he has let him stay in a position within the Sheriff’s Office and a lot about the person Nicholson is…..Being Sheriff is more than just wanting the title of a new retirement, or a dream……I have to ask please look at all the facts I am sure that some of these guys will throw all sorts of falsehoods and exaggerations and hope the public believes them because this is the only hope they may have….just an opinion

(end of R&L post)

First they cut Mark down, "Nicholson takes a paycheck home and would then cut him in the back to run against him… (it say's) alot about the person Nicholson is….

Then they go into damage control because they know all the corrupt and immoral stuff that they have done and continue to do. So, they throw out a pre-emptive disclaimer which is REALLY pathetic;

"I have to ask please look at all the facts I am sure that some of these guys will throw all sorts of falsehoods and exaggerations and hope the public believes them because this is the only hope they may have…."

So they take the first stab, throw in a disclaimer about what they are afraid might be coming and now they are playing the sympathy card after getting tore up from something they started. Typical Redmondology; say and play whatever you can that fits the moment.

The Redmond political machine is falling apart a piece at a time. "It isn't what you do, it's what people think you do" is the fuel that Redmond ran his machine on for so long, but people have finally seen what he is all about.

Redmond can switch tactics from the attacker to the victim and back again as it suits, but it doesn't appear to be working for him any longer.

His ad in today's paper was a large risk when he put the saying

The Public Servant You Know...
the Sheriff You Can Trust.

People do know and the whole trust thing, well I wouldn't have gone there.

It is time:

...for a new administration to restore honesty and integrity to the Sheriffs Office.

...to increase productivity by improving officer morale.

...to have a Sheriff that is truly for the people and available to the people.

...to have one set of rules for employees and one set of laws for the citizens of Iredell County.

...for law enforcement, not politics to be the philosophy backing every officer risking their lives to serve the public.

Mark knows everything that is wrong and that is why he has risked everything to take a stand to make things right for everyone. As you may have heard him say before:

"My motivation and inspiration is my grandpa who from the time I was little told me that I should stand up for what is right in spite of the cost. I'm taking that stand by asking for the opportunity to be your Sheriff and I will be honored if you give me your support."

It is time to vote for a great person and great leadership. On May 4th, vote

Mark Nicholson for Sheriff 2010

Anonymous said...

2:54 Something else you forgot to add. Mark didn't return to the Sheriffs Office "because of tough times".

Mark was making way more money than he did at the Sheriffs Office running a successful concrete business, but returned due to his love for the job and the satisfaction he got from helping and serving others.

Just another of the lies that has been told to try to discredit Mark because Redmond knows he has a worthy opponent this time.

Anonymous said...

Also interesting on Redmond's Facebook page. Redmond's signs used to be all red with white letters. Now on his facebook page he has changed the signs to white with red letters, just like Mark's. He even added a star just like Mark.

Good tactic, changing over to match the winning candidates colors. Stealing name recognition.

I guess you have to do whatever you can when you have nothing else to run on. Desperation is an ugly thing.

The amusing thing is that Redmond is currently the Sheriff and once again he is following the lead of his employee. It is very obvious that the wrong person is in charge.

Nicholson for Sheriff 2010

Hell, we didn't have an evidence room to put stuff into, all we did was drive it around in the trunk of our car for a day or two and sell it in the Bronx. Youse guys are something else. I'm taking my Yankee Ass back to New York with the other guy.

It was a good run for Redmond while it lasted. An old fellow should be thinking about writing memoirs, watching some TV or maybe playing some senoir games down at the Senoir Center. Redmond is past retirement age and should be enjoying his golden years instead of stressing about an election. Viagra can take care of one of the problems of old age, but what if something really important like his judgment and reason goes. Do Redmond and Iredell County a favor. Vote for Blocker or Nicholson.

Back to the point of the article: Why is either the evidence tech, or their supervisor not fired and/or criminally charged? Or is it that Poteat lied to the victim and it was not the fault of the evidence room at all but whomever signed off for the stuff to be destroyed? Why has the wonderful DA's office and County Commissioners not ordered an independent audit? I know I know it's all political BS !!!!

I didn't know he was that successful with Eddie and Melinda. Wonder if the IRS knew it!

Anonymous said...

3:58 I am sure they do. Mark Nicholson is above board on everything.

You idiots don't have a thing to go on but attack, do you? Someone makes a post to point out a lie and the first thing the Redmondites do is fly back with something else. Just another reason on top of all the others that Redmond will not get my vote or the vote of many others.

In about 40 hours we will know how the election went. Should be interesting.

We are talking about " Roach in the ashtray Eddie",what's a little weed among friends? Eagle Mills is the top production area in Iredell, Right? Idiot?

I remember that incident with a borrowed car for a parade or some event at a school. That entire thing was cleared with Redmond's blessing.

Apparently some insecure person with no law enforcement backing felt they needed to start the rumor that Mark was going to do away with the School Resource officers. A teacher emailed and asked about it.

Q. Hi Mark,
I am currently in the process of researching information on candidates for Sherriff and would like to ask you a question. I am a middle school teacher in the northern end of Iredell County and safety in our schools is a top priority to me. I was told that if elected, you planned to remove school resource officers from our schools. Now I know that most of what you hear is unfounded, therefore I wanted to come straight to the source and ask you personally if this is true. This is the one negative comment I have heard in contrast to a multitude of positive ones, however the importance of this issue prevents me from overlooking it. I would like to base my decision on facts, and not hearsay, so I appreciate your time in addressing my concern. Also, if this claim is unfounded, I would like to be able to say so if it comes up again.

Thank you,

Jamie

A. Jamie, thanks for contacting me and allowing me to correct this misunderstanding. I have no intention in removing the SRO's from our Schools. It is going to take much more involvement from law enforcement to help with problems in the Schools. I believe that there needs to be involvement with teachers like yourself and the School adminitration. You are in a position to tell law enforcement who the problem kids are so that they can be targeted for help to guide them in a new direction and if that does not work then they can be targeted for prosecution. Also I would like to take the time to thank you for what you do. I my opinion teachers have the most difficult job in the county. Currently there is precious little being done to help the problems in the Schools. Drugs, gangs, and disrespectful behavior is in my view unacceptable. The people who work in the Schools deserve not just law enforcement's help but all citizens in the county. If we can make a difference in the Schools we will see all crimes decrease. Again thank you for your question. Please let me know if you have any further. Mark Nicholson.

The drugs in the car was explained by having the owner of the car take responsibility. The driver of the car, school resource officer and business partner of your man lied out of it. Birds of a feather

Trash talking is all they have, so let them have their moment. Like all of their moments this one will come to an end.

Hopefully after tommorrow the public will let Redmond know that his services are no longer needed. He can devote himself fulltime to his superette and oil company and Iredell County can get back on it's feet.

Anonymous said...

YEP, LET PHIL RUN HIS OIL COMPANY OR SHOULD HE STAY HOME SO HIS WIFE CAN KEEP A WATCH ON HIM???

Anonymous said...

Superette, a compact food market which often services persons in low-density suburbs. As a specific sort of shop, the term is most commonly used in New Zealand, where the layouts of superettes are similar, if not identical, to the typical New Zealand dairy. In the United States, the term is simply used in a few states in Northern New England such as Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont as an alternative to the term "convenience store" or "mini-mart." But the New Zealand superette is itself a foreign cousin of the American convenience store, and a suburban cousin of the more rural "general store."

When does Eddie get off Work? Is he still dealing? You boys smoke it over like the old days, and make your next move, maybe DEA agent. Back when you got rich pouring concrete, Melinda was the brains of the outfit. Had the most balls too. Does she endorse Mark too? How about that child support? Why not Eddie's pic in the newspaper, your good buddy and partner?

Up until now I have just sat back and watched and read the posts on here and in the Landmark.
I really have not had a dog in this fight but I see it is now time to introduce one
and my name is Eddie Summers.
I have been told all my life it is better to sit and look ignorant than to open your
mouth to confirm it. From what I have read on here over half of this crap I have seen
posted confirms the ignorance of some people.I am posting this one and only post to set
facts straight:

1. Mark DID leave the sheriffs office to go in business with me
2. My business would not have been what it was if it wasn't for Mark
3. Mark was a true asset but he was not happy and "wanted" to return to law enforcement.I consider myself "RICH" by having Mark as a friend.
4. Yes there was pot found in the car that I BORROWED for the home coming queen
to ride in for the event. I requested that the sherriffs office drug test me
immediately, and they did. My test came back NEGATIVE. The owner of the car
claimed ALL responsibility. I was cleared of all wrongdoing by Sherriff Redmond himself.
5. As for Mark and I "lying our way out of it", I was a school resource officer at
the time and did not even know Mark at this time and did not meet him until AFTER
I became a road officer.
6. And as far as "roach in the ashtray Eddie" , I challenge anyone to find any
documentation of anyone finding roaches in any ashtray of mine, never happened.
This is just another example of people confirming their ignorance.
7. As far as the amount of "money" we were making in the Concrete business, it only
takes the position of door greeter at Wal-Mart to equal a deputy sherriffs pay.
So it would not take much to make more than we did at the Sherriff's Dept. And
on April 15th of every year my taxes have been filed by a CPA and everthing has
always been filed correctly. And please dont use me and my ex wifes name in the
same sentence again.
8. As far as child support you can check
the NC Dept. of Child Support and see that I am PAID IN FULL .And I have also had
custody of my 2 kids for the past
5 years and no one knows where their mother is because she hasnt seen them
in 5 years. And you call that "BRAINS".As far as my pic not being in the paper
you would have to ask Mark about that. Another example of confirming ignorance.
9. And speaking of "BALLS", if you have a set I will be at the West Iredell Ruritan
building if you wanna discuss it personally from 6 am to 7:30 pm.I look forward
to meeting the person who thinks they know so much about my life.

I am a Mark Nicholson supporter and proud of it. I am not against Redmond I am
pulling for Mark. In my opinion Redmond's day has come and past.It is time for new
faces in ALL elective offices from the local level to the federal level.
From the posts I have read I am sure they are only coming from a few.And these
few are more than likely county employees who are supposed to be professionals
but this childish crap here sounds more like a kindergarten cop. The sad
part of this whole thing is no matter who is elected sherriff you will have a
select few that will always try to have their heads stuck up the sherriffs ass.
In most cases you cannot tell where the sherriff ends and they begin, but knowing
Mark as I do it will be harder to get your head up his ass because there isn't as much
room up there as the current sherriff. From the words of Forest Gump.."thats all
I have to say about that. Anyone who wants to discuss this matter further you can
borrow a set of stones from someone because its apparent you don't have any.. because you
know who I am..who are you.

Yours Truly
Eddie Summers

I forgot one thing who owes child support now for the past five years not even a bithday card for the kids If that is what you call brains and balls then it explains alot about you

"It will be harder to get your head up his ass because there isn't as much room up there as the current sherriff" Well we know now that you boys were much more than friends. No wonder Melinda ran the show.

On a more humorous note... I stopped at the Wilco gas station next to Walmart today. The homeless guy that usually has the dog with him stopped me at the door and commented on the Nicholson for Sheriff sign I had just stuck in the ground.

He said Redmond has to go. He lived in Olin before he became homeless and he has known Phil all his life. He said he is a crook and a terrible person and he needs to go.

So now even the homeless are catching on. I guess that "It's not what you do, it's what people think you do" crap isn't getting over on anyone anymore.

That's funny I don't care who you are.
