Have a question you’d like to ask the candidates for Iredell County’s board of commissioners? How about those hoping to be our next District Attorney?
Several people have asked me to write about and/or endorse certain candidates in both races. I don’t intend to endorse candidates, but I can certainly ask them your questions and post their answers here.
The primary is May 6. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
Three seats are open on Iredell County’s Board of Commissioners – including the seats currently occupied by Sara Haire Tice, who is not seeking re-election this year, Statesville’s Godfrey Williams and Mooresville resident Ken Robertson.
Joining Williams and Robertson on the Republican ballot are Statesville’s Gene Houpe, and Mooresville residents Brad Howard and Scott Keadle.
Five Democrats are also hoping to win the seats, including Statesville’s Chuck Gallyon and Mark Vanek, Union Grove resident Eugene Shuffler, and Mooresville’s Fred Coggins and Barbara Orr.
In the primary, Republicans and Democrats will whittle their respective field of five candidates down to three. And the six candidates left standing – three Republicans and three Democrats – will face off in the Nov. 4 general election for the three open seats.
In addition to the county commission race, three Republicans are vying for the position of DA for the 22A District, including Mooresville resident Alan Martin and Statesville's Sarah Kirkman and Michael Van Buren.
So, what’s your question? Post it in a comment here, or send it to jgatton@windstream.net
With the primary right around the corner, I'll need all questions in by next Wednesday, April 23, so I'll have enough time to try to track down some answers for you.
In the meantime, if you want to verify your voter registration, find out where you vote, review your voting history or see a sample ballot for the May 6 primary, visit http://www.sboe.state.nc.us/VoterLookup.aspx

How about any information on their platforms? I haven't seen a thing other than campaign signs. What do they stand for; what is it they believe in and what do these individual candidates “bring to the table”?
Mooresville/South Iredell residents need to be engaged in THIS election of our County Commissioners…..anyone who wants or supports CATS 83X ……..if you want or support commuter rail……..if you realize that a large portion of the county tax revenue comes from Mooresville/South Iredell taxpayers and question what we get back………..then you should all be asking questions. If you want representation for Mooresville/South Iredell then get involved. Get your friends and neighbors involved, start asking questions and get engaged in this process. If not, you can not complain later.
To each candidate, my questions are:
• What is your position on the CATS 83X bus line and specifically the need for the county to contribute funding to help support this service for the residents of Mooresville/South Iredell?
• What proposed funding solutions do you have to address overall traffic issues in Mooresville/South Iredell?
• What is your funding solution and solutions in general for bringing commuter rail into Mooresville/South Iredell? Just as a side note, I am very tired of generic, divisive and non-definitive answers - they are no longer acceptable – we need solutions now.
• What is your position on our school districts in Mooresville/Iredell County? We currently have two-do you support keeping both districts why or why not?
• Provide your definition of quality of life for Iredell County residents. Is it different for those in Mooresville/South Iredell vs. the rest of the county?
• Do you believe transportation issues have an impact on the quality of life for Mooresville/Iredell County residents? If so, what are your proposed solutions.
• How would you go about facilitating a more collaborative and productive working relationship with the Town of Mooresville? What you would do to ensure this is a results driven relationship? Please be specific in your recommendations.
• Why should a resident of south Iredell vote for you-what makes you different from the existing commissioners and how will you represent the interest of the residents of Mooresville/South Iredell.
Word is out that Randy Marion is pretty much bankrolling his son-in-law, Grey Mills’s campaign. Here is the problem with that. Randy Marion’s name keeps creeping up in ways that gives one pause. Just to name a few: He’s been involved for years in all of that behind the scenes Chamber of Commerce outshoot groups like the SICDC and the EDC where they have used huge amounts of our tax dollars to stay in “the know” and for their own self-aggrandizement and networking. He also has been a major contributor to Bill Thunberg’s campaigns, and we all know that Thunberg was the breaking vote in the rotten cable deal that is only getting more rotten by the day. Marion was also one of the people in a posse of about seven who went all the way up to the local paper’s publisher to try and put a muzzle on the editor of that paper. Why? Because he was reporting on all the waste, mismanagement and theft in Mooresville. Now, I always thought we as true Republicans were supposed to want to shrink government and government spending, especially misspending. Since when did we start supporting government misspending and abuse of tax dollars? If indeed Marion has propped up his son-in-law to run, then this could be an indication of how Grey Mills will be, too, and you can count me out.
Truly Republican and Proud of it
