BREAKING: Griffith resigns

Renee Griffith has resigned from the Iredell County Board of Commissioners.

Here is a written statement from Griffith, courtesy of The Rick Baker Show:

 August 8, 2012

It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the Iredell County Board of Commissioners.  I decided the fight to stay does not outweigh the price my family, my friends, and this community would be forced to pay.  I leave this position knowing there is much work to be done in this county.  During this very difficult time the good people of this county have reached out to me with love, support, and prayers.

The voter’s of this county are tired of politicians and political parties who rule with an air of self-righteousness.  The Iredell Republican party, in many ways, is much more corrupt and broken than the Democrat party they hate.  This has caused voters to become disenfranchised.  How unfortunate this attitude alienates many very qualified citizens from running for office.  Citizens who, if given the opportunity, could make a difference in this county, state, and country.

I appreciate the citizens giving me the opportunity to serve them as a commissioner.

Renee Griffith

To accuse anyone of corruption is nigh on slanderous. See how this one operates? Self-righteous to the end.

Baker's been operating on the fringes of slander lately. It wouldn't surprise me if he wrote her statement.

Really?!? The Party is corrupt??? What a joke!!! Ms Griffith has ZERO credibility flinging that kind of mud

Let's shock them all and vote in a Democrat.

Always someone elses fault... isn't it Renee???

Anonymous said...

Sheesh, she didn't go down with a lot of grace and class. As for self-righteous, she ought to try looking in the mirror. And hating the other party? How Christian is that? Whatever happened to working together for the greater good? Everyone is so polarized these days. Maybe playing off that kind of "hate" is what causes the kind of nastiness I'm seeing out there all the time.

And Renee, you did it to yourself so you have nobody to blame but yourself. Take a lesson from this and move on.

For some reason, I can't get Spin Doctors' "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" out of my head.

She's right about one thing: BOTH parties are corrupt! I used to vote only by my party, but now I am giving it serious thought to start just voting for the person. Its the only chance we got of keeping politicians half straight. I don't trust the "parties" anymore. The hell with them all.

I never thought I would see the day around here when somebody would actually resign when they were supposed to. I guess it really is a new day in these parts. Gives one hope.

Wow, Renee, you hate me? We know each other. I've broken bread with you and some of your Republican friends and yes, I'm a Democrat. And a Christian who goes to church who loves my family and my country.

This is just sad. It's a shame you didn't do the right thing in a more timely fashion so we could have gotten a better candidate to replace you. No matter. I'm voting for the Democrats. I actually have voted for Republicans in the past. I vote for the right person for the job, but y'all have just gotten nasty and hateful.

Wish we could get rid of Redmond and his cronies this fast.

I think Ms. Griffith did the right thing, but I don't think soul searching had a lot to do with it. True, it is not very Christian to admit to hating Democrats if you are a Republican. It's kinda like the old story where both armies pray to the same God; which one will he choose to save? Hating someone because of party affiliation is just dang ignorant. And remember, people will show you who they really are-everyday-through their words and actions. You just have to be wise enough to listen.

I'm with you, Sue. Clear the Temple, well said. Renee just showed her true colors with her resignation statement. She lashed out and one fine day her words will come back to bite her in the butt. She is alienating a lot of people she may very well need one day, including the people who supported and forgave her. A lot of people knew she had an ugly side and it was only a matter of time before it came out. The falsifcation and back-pedaling was only a symptom. A five year old who does something wrong tries to blame it on her invisible friend. An adult, a true responsible adult in the first place doesn't take short cuts, then doesn't place blame when she does and is caught, and then takes responsibility and faces the music.

I'm just wondering if the real reason she didn't want to step down is now she can't control what people are going to be looking at with commission business. Methinks the tip of the iceberg is just beginning to show.

As a citizen, I thank you for doing the right thing Renee. I know it was difficult but it was the right thing for you to do.

You have spoken out against the republican party, and you are right. There are many that are there that should not be there. Several are merely putting on a show for their supporters.

The people of this county need to put this behind them. Mrs. Griffith is no longer holding a position in our government. She is now just a citizen like the rest of us.

Perhaps she can use this unfortunate situation to help expose others that are ruining our government.

So Jaime, is she still running for County Commission in November, or is she resigning the nomination also?

Can the Republicans replace her name on the ballot?

Will the Commissioners replace her until December?

Will the Republicans prove that they can always one-up themselves in the slime department by replacing her with Sara Langtree-Tice-Howard?

Anonymous said...

It's time to stop piling on. Let the woman go in peace.

It is more important to elect the best possible commissioners from the available choices come November.

There are corrupt people in both parties folks. Forgot the Dem's homosexual scandal in Raleigh already? I'm sure the local Republican county GOP guys who didn't want her elected in the first place have rejoiced in her actions. If you read her statement again she never says that she personally hates anyone, it's the Iredell Republican party that hates the Democrats, and vice-versa. This B.S. is why more people are switching their NC voter registration to Independants. Another reason the alternative action groups like FreedomWorks, Citizens Against Government Waste, Civitas, the NC Christian Action League, etc are gaining supporters. Dishonesty and corrupt, ego-maniacs must be tossed out of office with your votes. We need to be informed voters and know who and what we are voting for. The best person for the job... regardless of party platforms. Just what the Founding Father's had in mind in 1776 -- imagine that!!

Hey, 10:13 a.m.! I'm working on tracking down as many answers as I can. But for now, it sounds like a lot is up in the air.

According to Rick Baker when I spoke with him yesterday, Griffith's resignation letter was also a resignation from her candidacy. However, according to the Elections Office, as of this very minute, Griffith has not officially resigned as a candidate for November's election.

Until all decisions regarding her candidacy and the GOP's replacement nomination (I'm guessing) are made and official, there's no way to know how the ballot will look (whose name will be on it and whose will be off).

I would *assume* (though that's NEVER a good thing, and I try to avoid it at all costs) that the GOP will appoint a replacement to serve from now through November.

I will keep everyone posted as answers come in. Meanwhile, let me know if you have further questions I can try to answer ... hopefully with more information and less assumption. ;)

The following comment was submitted for posting but contained an allegation that I can't substantiate. I have copied and pasted the comment below after taking out said statement.

Just as a reminder: I try to review all comments for potentially libelous statements. I do that primarily for your protection and mine. I do not take responsibility for - nor do I necessarily agree with - what is written by others in the comment section. And just while I have your attention (and not because it applies to this comment in particular), please remember that public officials are fair game for criticism, but private citizens are not.

If the person who wrote this comment has proof of the allegation made (that is now redacted rom the comment), I would love to see it and then would reconsider posting the comment in its entirety.

Here's the rest of the comment:

Democrat or Republican, wrong is wrong and right is right, I just hope that she is held to the same standard as as all citizens and public officials. If she did something wrong and unlawful then she should be prosecuted just like any other person. Being a public official does not mean you are above the law. That being said then she should be answerable for her actions, lost of job, prosecution ... If she wants to go out with a Bang then lets load the barrels.

What really ticks me off is that no one in this county seems to think that a Democrat could possibly get elected; it's treated as a joke. Democrats here in Iredell are no better or worse (obviously) than the Republicans. A good portion of the problem is that the average person is not very educated in understanding Constitutional law and the bill of rights and refuse to separate church from state, assuming their beliefs are everyone's beliefs. Or they get their news from a television network that is anything but unbiased;it's just a propaganda machine, churning out ugliness and stirring the pot of contention. Unfortunately, they attach the stigma of the national parties' platform to their neighbors when the truth is most Dems/Reps are usually pretty moderate and will work together. There is a fine line between a Southern Democrat and a moderate Republican, if at all. Southern Democrats are not at all like our Northern liberal counterparts; I have been thrown off enough liberal sites to prove it. They don't like it when Southerners don't all fall into the dumb hick category and don't understand at all the Southern mentality, how we could call ourselves Democrats yet strongly support gun rights and the death penalty. Southerners are southern first;, something that Yankees don't always get. In fact, I have had a hard time explaining it to northerners, although I'd be willing to bet that some of you Southerners understand what I am saying very well. Republicans and Democrats will team up quick when the South or southern culture is attacked or belittled. As many people have said, we need to stop looking at the R or the D beside the name and get to know what the candidates represent and find out about his/her character before votes are cast. Then hopefully we can get more accomplished and prevent embarrassing incidences like the current debacle.

Renee, thank goodness you made the right decision. Too bad it took you so long to make it. Your behavior while a siting county commissioner was outrageous and embarassing to not only you, but the all the citizens of this county.

Was she drunk or high when she wrote, "The voter’s of this county are tired of politicians and political parties who rule with an air of self-righteousness. The Iredell Republican party, in many ways, is much more corrupt and broken than the Democrat party they hate. This has caused voters to become disenfranchised"?

She says what voters and citizens have been saying all along and then she attacks her own party?

She is still a loser in my book and should go to jail, and lose her job as "principal" at her Christian school and give up that Mercedes with the temp tag she is driving around in.

Anonymous said...

I find the comment from DHHS spokesperson Lori Walston laughable.

She said "the altering of a document in pursuit of daycare licensure does not reach the level of a criminal offense but did say such an act is “a very serious matter”.

First of all, she is not in law enforcement nor does she work in the District Attorney's Office.

Second, if you read the statute on "Fraud", it is clear that Griffith sign those documents in order to obtain "something of value" which was the additional licensing of the school to bring in more money by creating space for additional kids. Although not a direct investment in her pocket it meets the definition under NCGS. Additionally, by her altering the original document, the DA could argue forgery of the signature of the initial inspector. Even those she did not forge the document per se, she did change the original document with an affixed signature already attached to a document that the initial inspector did not sign (cases have been successfully prosecuted for similar incidents that include people who cut and paste valid signatures). And the DA could conceiveably argue that Griffith "attempted to obtain property (license) by false pretense". NCGS states that "attempts" at a statutory crime is basically the same as if you completed the elements of the crime.

So Renee, don't think you have skated by with your resignation and gotten away with anything yet. Hopefully, the R&L will print a picture of your mug shot courtesy of your buddy Phil Redmond.

One down and ?? to go?

Renee, you acted like a petulant child. I believe that you waited in hopes that you will be elected this fall because now your name will remain on the ballot. (note, I did not say "ballet") Some people are gullible enough to vote for you too. There are plenty of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset out there in this county. Got news for them, this county is broken. It's been badly broken for some time now.

Now as to being Southern or whatever. The Late Unpleasantness ended almost 150 years ago. It's about time we all got past it, don't you think? In fact, I just read a book about the Union sympathizers in NC. And just to refresh everyone's memory, NC removed itself from the Union over the election of a Republican president. For a very long time after that war ended, a Republican couldn't get the time of day anywhere in the South. They were the dirty old carpetbaggers come down from the North to cash in on the inpoverished South among other things. I'm getting tired of this us versus them thing. It's starting to cause a lot more trouble than it's fixing.

And am I the only one that found it odd that it was Ken Robertson who was doing all the talking during this big old mess? He's also running for re-election and he's not the big head of the board, so who made him King? Where was Johnson?

Frankly these days, both parties with their extremism, are not worth identifying with on the whole. I'm taking each individual candidate on their stance and their willingness to stand up for what's right despite what party leaders say.

Since it was brought up here...
BACKFLOW

The state regulation requiring municipalities to protect their water supply by having high hazard businesses install those expensive backflow prevention devices is designed for high hazard businesses such as chemical companies. Ryan Rase, with poor judgment, advised the town board to declare ALL businesses high hazard including those only having one toilet and one sink.

BLAME WATER CREDITS ON RYAN RASE for snowing the board on false requirements that no other town required. Mitch and Dusenbug made the motion and second for Rase's very anti business proposal.

By the way the last MI connection guy on the board Mac Herring supported the Ryan Rase suggestion of expensive backflows.

Its pretty stupid for the town engineer to think that water in a sink can defy the law of gravity and jump back UP into the faucet, fight against water pressure in the town lines and end up in a neighbors glass.

Yes, Southerners are southerners first. If you were a true son of the South you would know that. So, in the meantime, kiss my Southern a** and bless your culturally defunct mindset. That doesn't mean we aren't Americans. Most soldiers, marines, etc, come from the South, in case you didn't know. And as a person who has had family fight for this country in every conflict/war since the Revolutionary War, I think my family qualifies as pretty much American. If you don't understand the sentiment that I was trying to make then either a. you're an idiot or b. you're a Yankee transplant, most of whom are tolerable but with you, I'll help you pack.

"The Late Unpleasantness?" Don't you mean the War of Northern Aggression?

Anonymous said...

Actually not a yankee transplant, but a member of the UDC in another state that I moved here from, also the DAR. My roots in the South go way back. I just decided when the KKK tried to make a statement here a few months ago that I was tired of all of this and I'm not playing north vs south anymore. It's over. Done. We have people from all 50 states dying in foreign lands, not just the south. I've been to Arlington recently. So get over it. This is why there is so much nastiness here. You want to keep Iredell for just the natives? Good. Enjoy the ghost town after everyone leaves.

I know this is off topic but just had to respond

BACKFLOW

The NC General Statues require all public water systems, not just municipalities, to protect their water supply by having both moderate and high hazard water users to install backflow prevention devices. It is not just designed for businesses such as chemical companies. If you read the actual General Statutes you would know that. It even states under the moderate category, "most commercial business." Most other water utilities do force all connection other than residential houses, to install backflow preventors, this also includes residential irrigation systems.

Though I do not know Ryan Rase, I would agree that all commercial business do require backflow devices by the rules set forth by NCDENR, including those only having one toilet and one sink. It seems that Mooresville is only enforcing what is required by NCDENR, Public Water Supply Section.

As far as water credits I don't know what this is, but the business by law should be installing the backflow devices and not receiving any credit from the Town. Legally a business that has a backflow/backsiphonage could be held responsible for any damage they cause the Town or any illness or deaths that arise from the backflow. The Town has to enforce the regulations or they would also be held responsible plus possibly be fined by the State.

Also as far as stupid engineers go, I take it you've never heard of back siphonage. I suggest you just google it. It can occur when a water main breaks or your neighbors house catches on fire and a hydrant is opened. It has happened my times and has caused many illnesses and deaths. And NO, water can not jump back up a faucet from the sink, that is called an air gap between the sink and faucet, which by the way is also a type of backflow device.

Read this if you actually want to learn something, not just gripe without facts:
http://www.epa.gov/ogwdw/disinfection/tcr/pdfs/issuepaper_tcr_crossconnection-backflow.pdf

No I do not live in or work for the Town of Mooresville, but I am informed.

Anonymous said...

Renee did the right thing by resigning from the board....now all we need is for her to remove her name from the ballot.

Anonymous said...

Yes all business do need backflow valves but they should not all be classified as the same. The TOM was putting every business into the same hazardous material classification which calls for the most expensive backflow valve. Business with just toliets and sinks were being required to spend a couple of thousand dollars on a backflow valve instead of the $250 backflow required by the state. Now the town is paying back more than $200,000 dollars (from what i've heard) in water credits to compensate for the mistake and there not through figuring it all out. Don't put all the blame on Ryan your elected officials should have done some due dilligence as well. Elected officials were getting complaints of the new ordinace from day one too bad they decided not to look into it further before they had to start compensating with our tax revenue. I really wish Jamie would shed a little more light on this.

Anonymous said...

Notice you said most not all. The big problem is the town tried to clssify every business as high hazard. Now they will be paying back businesses who were wrongly classified & forced to install a more expensive backflow valve. The town is paying those business back in water credits. Personally I think they should owe cash with intrest.

Anonymous said...

Intresting!

Anonymous said...

Wondering what was wrong with my post about the water backflow valves? It was a response to the last post just so they knew it wasn't the fact that businesses had to install the valves rather that the town tried to classify everyone in one category. Its also a fact they are going back and evaluating every business and will refund the difference in the cost of backflow valves with a credit on their water bill. Wondering why you are sensoring this? You are great at finding info. would love to see a story on this. Seems something thats costing the town this much money would be Gatton worthy. Thanks for all your hard work. Have a great weekend. No need to post this it was for you.

Remember a write in vote for Tice is a vote for the Howards.

Anonymous said...

Informed on the law but not the full story. By law there are different classifications but not by the TOM at least originally.
