Liar.
It's a word that has been used often by Mayor-hopeful Jared Esselman and his campaign to characterize an at-large commissioner candidate, Skip Alexander, who has apparently been circulating a two-page document of his concerns about the would-be mayor and the truthfulness of some of his credentials and statements.
Earlier this week, Esselman wrote a document of his own in rebuttal of Alexander's document. In it, he makes the jump from Alexander being a liar to opposing mayoral candidate Miles Atkins being a liar, asking citizens: “Do you want another pair of liars representing you in office? These two politicians are willing to lie to you now, how much will they be willing to lie about once they are in office?”
Esselman calls Alexander a liar over an assertion Alexander makes that Esselman wants to radically restructure Mooresville's form of government, eliminating the need for a town manager and instead passing those duties – and the hefty salary – to a full-time mayor. Alexander cites a letter that Esselman wrote to commissioners in March to back up his allegation.
But Esselman says that letter was just a research paper he wrote while still studying at Harvard. “My thesis was: Instead of going through the hiring process (once Town Manager Steve Husemann resigned), here's another option,” Esselman said in a phone interview with the Report on Monday.
In his rebuttal document, Esselman says: “Skip is taking my college research and using it to deceive the people of Mooresville.”
To the Report, Esselman said that his “research paper” was essentially just “copying and pasting what (other cities) do” to provide some alternatives for the board to consider. He says he never suggested that the commissioners should restructure Mooresville's government.
But that's not exactly true.
In fact, in a March 13 e-mail to commissioners, the mayor and town attorney - obtained by the Report in a public-records request - Esselman writes: “We may not be a major metropolitan area but we are the largest city in Iredell County and we have witnessed the Council-Manager systems’ flaws and failures time and time again. Now is the time to adopt a new system!”
“ … the Town of Mooresville currently uses the Council-Manager form of Government. This form is very traditional for American cities and certainly has its benefits but also has its detriments,” Esselman writes. “I might suggest that with the rate of growth Mooresville has been experiencing and with the Town’s growing prominence in both Iredell County and the Piedmont region, transitioning to a Mayor-Council form of government could be incredibly beneficial.
“I ask the City Council to consider revising the Town Charter so as to create a Mayor-Council system of government. The timing could not be more appropriate. The need could not be more present.”
He also included potential changes to the town charter that would include granting the mayor the power to appoint deputy mayors to “serve at the pleasure of the mayor,” and he included an annual salary for the mayor of .33 percent of the town budget's general fund … just like Alexader states in his two-page document.
In a separate document Esselman sent to commissioners on March 13, the mayor-hopeful writes: “With Mayor Montgomery not seeking re-election, and since the Town Manager resigned, we as citizens are in the perfect position to vote on a referendum revising the Town Charter and creating a Mayor-Council structure for our town government.
"Mooresville needs full time leadership, and a full time Mayor."
Interestingly, on the following day, March 14, Esselman filed his Statement of Organization with the Iredell County Board of Elections to run for Mayor of Mooresville.
Just a research paper? Or a proposition to radically restructure Mooresville's town government?
You decide.

Got him!
It's always nice to have a fact-finder. You never know what kind of bizarre alternative stories people will come up with. Keep up the search for truth and justice Jaime! It didn't take a Harvard degree to poke holes in this story...
Welcome back, Jaime! You were missed!
Skip Alexander has never struck me as a liar. Neither has Miles Atkins.
Mr. Esselman, on the other hand, has apparently attempted to do just that. But, now I understand why he's so anxious to be our new Mayor.
Excellent writing Jaime. Thank you for investigating and bringing facts into the story.
I still question Skip's integrity in the way he has been circulating this information as well as the innuendos in his 2 pager. If he was so concerned why did he not raise his concerns with the media or send in a "letter to the editor" of the local newspapers? Why has he been using aggressive intimidation tactics against Jared Esselman? He has been waging a personal war - is this someone we want representing us? How will he work with the board? Will he harass them if he doesn't like what they say?
Another question: is it not true that the State constitution or some law in North Carolina requires towns and cities to have a council-manager form of government, i.e. that there is not an option for another form of government other than amending State law? Maybe Esselman should be lecturing the legislature. Kind of like where his website is stressing education and yet the town board has nothing to do with managing the Mooresville or Iredell-Statesville school system. Seems like all of Esselman's education doesn't necessarily mean he understands what is going on. He says he is going to work to "save our teacher's jobs". Well, the fact is, the Mayor and town board have not one iota of authority over teacher's jobs. That is under the purview of the school board. I don't doubt this young fellow's desire and even his intentions but his lack of knowledge of the fundamentals of local government make him unqualified for the position of mayor.
P.S. my quote of Esselman at 3:58 about "teachers' jobs" comes directly from his campaign website as it is today.
Skip Alexander is running for Mooresville's At-Large seat and I was surprised by his public bragging about being a former FBI agent as I thought retired FBI agents like to keep a low profile. In emails, Skip is stating libel facts about a Mayoral candidate which is considered legal (FBI reference 2. Distributing inaccurate campaign literature). For me, what pushes it over illegal is using his public service background as adding credibility to his erroneous facts. (FBI reference 1. Public corruption is a breach of trust by federal, state, or local officials) And, the two biggest sources of credibility are "retired FBI Special Agent" and "Licensed North Carolina Attorney". http://www.alexander4mooresville.com/
Even though, according to the FBI website it is not an election crime to "distribute inaccurate campaign literature" your website does also state that "Public corruption is a breach of trust by federal, state, or local officials". Skip Alexander has and is still making erroneous if not libel statements about a candidate running for Town Mayor. When Skip, in his own campaign, states his background as a former FBI agent and an acting lawyer, he provides a false sense of credibility to what he is saying and the public believes him.

Holy Mackerel! What are they teaching these folks up at Harvard?
It looks like this young man wanted to get elected then stage some sort of coup. Haven't we had enough of our local government gone wild around here for the past few years?
I believe we elect a school board to run the schools and that the mayor runs the town, correct?
Guess Harvard is teaching our future politicians to excel at slimy politics.
Hey, Jared, we're sick of this. No more business as usual. If you really cared about Mooresville, you'd have voted and you'd have been up front and honest and you wouldn't be hiding behind your diploma and your military record.
What have you done for us lately?
If those $4000 donations are illegal, then call the cops. At least they are local. Randy Marion is an opportunist and Redmondite but I don't have to buy a car from him and I won't. At least I know he's local.
Randy Marion throwing money at another Mooresville election. Surprise, surprise...
Just got home, opened my Gatton Report, read the lastest, and my first thought was: OUCH.
Looks like young Master Esselman just got outed in a big way. Nobody told him he's playing with the big boys/girls now?! This is Mooresville 2011 not Mooresville pre 2000's.
You do realize Randy Marion is a person and as such there is no law against him contributing money to a candidate right?
I'm not a lawyer. I just play one on the Internet.
Alot of things that are "legal" can also raise some eyebrows. Does a car salesman with a history of throwing his weight around to cover up local corruption being reported by the local newspaper just "give" four grand away to anybody? I don't know. I guess each one of us can be the judge.
I think where Jared Esselman messed up was when he started back peddling off of his idea to get rid of the town manager position. That actually was a great idea considering whose our so called town manager right now. some posters have called him town mismanager and I think that's more like it. Why would Jared try now to disown that idea? its this kind of flipflopping that everybody's tired of all the way from the White House down.
Please note that Randy Marion also supports Grey Mills. Grey Mills does NOT respond to any type of communication at all. He is useless at his job. Is this a trend?
Please note.
Randy Marion or Matthew Johnson are not the issue. Accepting the contribution falls on the burden of the campaign.
If you think Randy Marion's contribution is legal then ask yourself why the State Board of Elections is investigating the contributions? Mister internet lawyer, please reference page 75 of the 2010 Campaign Finance Manual found on the state's website www.sboe.state.nc.us/content.aspx?id=7

Randy Marion did not simply support Grey Mills in his bid for office. He bankrolled him. He did so because Grey Mills also happens to be his son-in-law. As for a pattern, let us just say that Mr. Marion has a penchant for surrounding himself with elected officials while he himself has never sought elected office. After all, with elected office comes unwanted attention such as scrutiny by and accountability to the lowly taxpayer.
Esselman seems to like to carelessly throw around the word "liar". It reminds me of when my children were little and another kid would call them a name. I taught them to turn around to the kid and just say "you are what you say". So, Jared, honey, you are what you say.
I gotta say it was kinda lame for Jared's daddy to get into the picture this early in the game. You're running for mayor for Pete's sake. You can't go running to daddy every time somebody says boo to you. Doesn't look real leader type. Sorry to say, but that was probably a real costly mistake.
When I was growing up in Rowan County a verbal attack like that by our mayor-hopeful on Alexander would have been called a "hissy-fit." Do we really want a leader of our community who misleads us - college paper, indeed - and one who cannot control himself?
Wait a minute. Now Jared has his daddy fighting hid battles for him? Sounds like real mayoral material to me. What's next? Mama laying out his clothes and packing his lunch every night?
I'm not wildly impressed with Randy Marion and his way of doing business but 4 grand in the real world isn't going to get you much. At least we know something about Atkins and they have some roots in the community and we can hold his feet to the fire. None of this hurry up and rent a place in town so you can get yourself a campaign going on your way back to DC.
That's a good point you got there, good buddy. If Miles Atkins screws up, he stands the risk of us running him out his own town in shame.....which we WILL do if he screws up bad. If Jared Esselman wins Mayor and he screws up, he'll just high-tail it back up North where all his friends and campaign money are. Okay, you twisted my arm. Miles for Mayor, it is.
Jamie, Jamie, Jamie! Do I need to educate you!
Tell me what makes Skip Alexander honest. Do you know him personally? Just because someone says it is true, does not make it true.
The following is from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth
Truth has a variety of meanings, such as the state of being in accord with fact or reality.[1] It can also mean having fidelity to an original or to a standard or ideal. In a common usage, it also means constancy or sincerity in action or character.[1] The direct opposite of truth is falsehood, which can correspondingly take logical, factual or ethical meanings.
However, language and words are essentially "tools" by which humans convey information to one another. As such, "truth" must have a beneficial use in order to be retained within language. Defining this potency and applicability can be looked upon as "criteria", and the method used to recognize a "truth" is termed a criterion of truth. Since there is no single accepted criterion, they can all be considered "theories".
Various theories and views of truth continue to be debated among scholars and philosophers. There are differing claims on such questions as what constitutes truth; what things are truthbearers capable of being true or false; how to define and identify truth; the roles that revealed and acquired knowledge play; and whether truth is subjective or objective, relative or absolute.
Major theories of truth
The question of what is a proper basis for deciding how words, symbols, ideas and beliefs may properly be considered true, whether by a single person or an entire society, is dealt with by the five major substantive theories introduced below. Each theory presents perspectives that are widely shared by published scholars.[5][6][7] There also have more recently arisen "deflationary" or "minimalist" theories of truth based on the idea that the application of a term like true to a statement does not assert anything significant about it, for instance, anything about its nature, but that the label truth is a tool of discourse used to express agreement, to emphasize claims, or to form certain types of generalizations.[5][8][9]

Mrs. Royer,
Mr. Esselman's very own words proved that what Mr. Alexander said was true.
Thank you for sharing the definition of truth. I know Mr. Esselman reads these blog comments, so I hope he is paying attention.

Copying and pasting. Mrs. Royer? You musta grad-ee-ated from Harvard!!!!
Randy Marion gives a lot of money to this community that we never hear about. What did the many thousands get him from the YMCA when he built a chapel. What did the many thousands get him from Dove house, what did the many thousands get him from his church. so I say put up or shut up. Many of us support our candidate because we care about the town. Its a lot more then the phone Harvard boy can say. What has he done for the town and what has he donated to??
Since when does one "copy and paste" a research paper?
Beats me. Ask Mrs. Royer. She (and Jared) knows EVERYTHING. (Should I have used "know" instead of "knows"? Anyone with a Harvard degree in here that can help me out?)
Jamie,
Referring to paragraph 2 which begins with "Esselman calls Alexander a liar...". I do not blame him Skip is a liar and I have the facts to prove it. You see I know Skip and he told me way back in August that he was mad the Miles Atkins had competition. You see Skip loves to go to the town meetings. Have any of you looked at the Mooresville Town Government streaming streaming video-on-demand? Where is Skip Alexander? I says he was there but I can not find him. Can you? So how do you prove his truthfulness?
Mrs. Royer,
With all due respect Wikepedia is HARDLY irrefutable and has been shown to be erroneous on many occasions. Just because something is on the internet that hardly makes it so. We wouldn't need Snopes then, would we?
Which brings me to the comment by 9:06. My point exactly. Years ago before the computer age, I taught high school completion courses in another state to adults and one of the thongs they had to do was write papers. When I moved, a friend took over and she is now faced with these folks copying and pasting from the net. Oh my, does it hit the fan when these folks get caught and every single one of them thinks she won't catch them at it. It wasn't acceptable 20 years ago and it isn't now. You are still expected to do the work.
As for his thesis or proposal, here is my thought on it. Why should we trade one weasel, Smith, for another? I don't know about the rest of you but I don't like being played.
I bet those folks up at harvard would like to know that jared cut and paste a research paper. He must have learned that technique from his morman theologians that cut out certain parts of their history to dupe more people in believing that garbage.

The ghost of the golden plates
Never seen anyone from Rowan that was worth a damn
He's a Morman? Whew! I thought he said he was a Mooresvillian. I heard it wrong. Or was that a moron?
Whatever.
If he's a Morman where did he do his mission? Is he doing it here? I thought he looked like a revrrend going out door to door.
The weasel you spoke of in comment dated October 6, 2011 9:24 PM was voted in to office by the Board of Commissioners which Miles Atkins is a member of. So what are you saying? Miles did not help select a great town manager?
Mrs. Royer, Mrs. Royer, Mrs. Royer, seriously, you may want to stop while you think you are ahead. I believe this article speaks for itself. In case you have forgotten, humor me and allow me to recap for you. 1. Skip said Jared wanted to change the Town Government's structure. 2. Jared called Skip a liar. 3. Jamie quoted PUBLIC RECORDS (that means they are available to you too) that showed that Jared sent emailed messages to the Town Board asking them to change the Town Government structure. Jamie did not prove that Skip is not a liar. JARED proved that Skip is not a liar. And unlike with you, those facts have been offered up. You just say you "have the facts" to prove Skip is a liar. So where are they? Let's see them.
Yes but that weasel has been propped up for years by your husband. So what's the difference really?
To Anonymous from comment dated October 6, 2011 9:24 PM
Exactly, so how much of the stuff that is printed on the Gatton Report is as you said,
"erroneous... Just because something is on the internet that hardly makes it so."
Reply to October 6, 2011 9:58 PM
Who is Skip to say what was said? Did you see the actual email or was it heresay?
Skip is a former FBI agent and he knows how to alter emails. Most teenagers can alter the content, sender, date sent, etc. Piece of cake!
Right, Mrs. Royster, I think you missed the last question I posted. I'll recap for you again. You say you have facts that prove Skip is a liar. So where are they? Let's see them.
In the meantime I will send Jamie a message to ask her to post Jared's emailed letters to the Commissioners. Oh and just to make sure it is not a gigantic conspiracy, I will also ask the Commissioners for a copy of the letters myself.
I tell you what. Let's meet back here, say, Monday with our facts. You game?
9:03 P.M. you tell us that "Randy Marion gives a lot of money to this community that we never hear about." And then you go about TELLING us about all the money he's given that nobody is supposed to know about. All of it very high profile and in your face to make sure he gets all the credit he can. He's our very own Donald Trump with his name on everything.
What very few people know about of course is Mr. Marion's shenanigans of meeting with editors of newspapers and such threatening to pull his advertisement if they didn't stop reporting on how his crony public officials were robbing us blind. That's what most people never hear about.
My husband isn't propping up any weasel because I don't have one. You assumed and you all know what they say when someone assumes.
So far all we're getting is damage control, excuses, attacks, and nothing but bull. This isn't a campaign, it's a circus.
Face it, Jared lost control of the big picture when he sent an email out in March. He failed to think things through. There are consequences to blowing off wild ideas. Ask Anthony Weiner about hitting "send."
"Why should we trade one weasel, Smith, for another?" HAHAHAHAHAHA you mean you fools are still paying that waste of oxygen to play golf (oops I meant run the town)? HAHAHAHAHA
I can see reading through today's comments that Erskin Smith may have a new pet name - The Weasel. I think I like it. From here on out, anyone who wants him to remain town manager can call him Erskin, and the rest of us will call him The Weasel!
Mrs. Royer? Don't suppose 'she' lives in that rented house on Institute? Sure does have a whole lot of time to defend the guy who claims he 'fought' with his calculator and calls an email he sent to the board trying to turn the Mayor's job into a full time gig a 'research paper'.
Jared lied, Skip told the truth. I don't know what Miles was supposed to have lied about.
The weasel
Pop goes the weasel!
That weasel should have been thrown out with the trash he let his boys throw on those lady's lawn. He allowed it and we paid for it. It was probably his idea. What's next? Is he gonna te the traffic cop to run over kids tha jaywalk?
So..instead of an inflammatory title and lots of mudslinging...show us the entire body of the email in question...plus the one before and after..just for context...and ask Mr Atkins to state up front..where he falls on the issue of outsourcing town of mooresville jobs..(not including the one his wife holds..cuz we know where he stands on that one)
While we all quibble and split hairs, The Weasel and all the Government Waste he represents will be laughing all the way to the bank.
That's the point, isn't it, 11:42? We are not getting value for our tax dollar at this point and we should trade in for more waste and such? I am thinking if we approach the cuurent board and say that we are not happy and this is not working we might stand a better chance of being heard by people who have lived and worked here awhile rather than some guy who has gotten some fancy ideas from up north that are untried here. I think it's getting to be pretty obvious that folks are not happy with staying the course.
I'm just saying it appears that we are being sold a bill of goods by someone who so far hasn't been too invested in Mooresville. Atkins and company may not be perfect but we know where they have been and what they have been up to of late. They're nit just renting a house for the summer on their way to the next better offer and theyre not bringing in their deputies from another state because they were college pals who helped them cook up this plan in poli sci study group over lattes at Starbucks.
Yes, I would love to see the entire email posted here, just like the entire "Skip papers" and Jareds response were posted. Lets make sure that if we have the facts, we have them all.
Jared called Skip a liar, Skip said Esselman was lying. They both yelled at eachother in a public meeting, and you guys are acting more childish than they are! Jared graduated from Harvard. He SHOULD be proud of that. Skip was an FBI agent. He SHOULD be proud of that. The things we accomplish in life say a lot about who we are!
Well done research once again! I'm sure we will see a similar well researched article on this subject in our Mooresville Tribune this morning. LOL
"The Weasel". You've got to love it. LOL. Of course if we didn't laugh we'd be crying as we watch about $140,000 walk out the door each year paying the biggest loser this side of Mississippi to warm the town manager's seat with his oversized arse.
You nitwits make a big issue of who came from where and where they went to school. Let's see the definition of a Mooresville native is one who has 8 generations buried in Willow Valley. Only Bobby has that pedigree. Miles is from Florida, Skippy is from Concord and many other places. Randy is from West Virginia. Most of your kids could not get in a good school in Chapel Hill and had to send them to a red school in Raleigh where they were required to associate with people from all around the world in countries like California, Kenya, New York. etc. and in order to speak in English they had to push 1. So look rednecks before you start yelling about where a kid went to school look around your house!
Mooresville? It's more like Lessville after we get done with these jerks. We've got 3 times what most of us make in a year walking out the door of town hall iin the weasel's back pocket and now we got us a punk kid from harvard yard wanting the same thing and all we have to do is vote him into office.
We're getting screwed over by the weasel now and this kid wants to screw us over with a staff of his choosing.
Randy Marion obviously supported our current Mayor
Hey, shouldn't there be two sides to every story? This is only showing reactions from people, i want to see the document that is going around. Maybe the "fact finder" should do a better job at completing the article by getting that document on here. I am curios to see what is said in there. Also, maybe it would not be bad to get a full time Mayor in this town. We should look more into that as a city and see what Jared says about it, i don't think he is the kind of guy that asks for a super large salary. I mean come on, if he wanted a huge salary he could have gone somewhere else with that Harvard Education. I got the impression that he is trying to serve and give back to our community of Mooresville.
Since I'm in a helpful mood, here you go......
http://thegattonreport.blogspot.com/2011/10/document-was-at-center-of-candidates.html
Mr. Esselman even responded!!!! http://thegattonreport.blogspot.com/2011/10/mayor-hopeful-fires-back-at-candidate.html
And then the blog provided a whole bunch of other supporting documents in an article appropriately entitled "Supporting Documents" .......http://thegattonreport.blogspot.com/2011/10/several-have-contacted-me-asking-me-to.html
Maybe you should do a little fact finding of your own before you make an ass out of yourself. Just sayin....
Now go educate yourself, boy.
