Iredell sheriff, deputy respond to lawsuit

Iredell County Sheriff Phil Redmond and Deputy Ben Jenkins are denying all accusations that Suzanne Wick and Lisa Mangiardi leveled against them earlier this year in a sexual-harassment lawsuit.

The two mens' response, filed in U.S. District Court in Charlotte, requests that the case be dismissed based on a lack of information.

Wick and Mangiardi, both who turned to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office for help when they found themselves in abusive relationships at home, say Jenkins - a detective at the time - sexually harassed and stalked them at a time when they needed police protection the most. The two women are suing Redmond for neglecting to act on information in Wick's formal complaint about Jenkins' misconduct. Redmond demoted Jenkins to jailer after Wick complained, but Jenkins is now a road patrolman and remains on active duty at the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.

For more information on Redmond and Jenkins' response, visit www.wbtv.com or www.statesville.com.

Good grief. Such arrogance

Can you get a copy of the response? I think the taxpayers are entitled to see that. What are they saying, I wonder? And has anyone seen Redmond? Is he cashing his paycheck for not showing up?

I'd actually suggest folks go to the Statesville article as it has more information about the specifics of their responses. But I'm a little confused because the attorney for the victims says that the department didn't ask for a dismissal, but the wbtv article says they did.

It is hard to believe Harold Miller kissed his job good bye the way he did. He had been there for such a long time.

Perhaps the Sheriff helped him look at his options, and he decided retirement looked more attractive than his future at the Sheriff’s Office.

Or, it is possible his passion for his hobbies got the better of him.

Or maybe the idea of all that free time was so enticing he could not resist it any further.

Perhaps, his yearning for freedom consumed him so badly; he could not hold back his feelings any longer and turned in his resignation.

Ahhh, what the hell do I know. I will just ask my friend April Sloan. She seems to know a lot about what goes on there.

Regardless, embrace your retirement Harold, you earned it…..

Let's all just wait and let the legal system handle this. I do not think there will be any good old boy influence in federal district court in Charlotte. The case will be decided on the merits of the opposing positions and on the adversarial skill of the attorneys involved.

Wow. No wonder I got this story mixed up with the snake story in the Observer.

I think they will find that they can't dance the courts around in Charlotte for years at a time like they do here. Federal district court is not going to mess around with these two clowns. Phillip can't glad-hand those folks. Wink, wink, wink. Ain't gonna work this time. You can be sure whoever the judge is, they aren't faux Kenny Rogers fans.

Just mulling some things over this fine afternoon. How is it Jerry Sandusky is already coming to trial mere months after his dirty deeds have come to light? We've been waiting, what, 3 years on Tommy Adams? No one has seen or heard from that weasel Redmond in months. It's Tuesday June 5, 2012. So that means 882 days until the next elrction day. That's 126 weeks. Multiply that by the roughly $8400 he makes a week and it adds up to $1,058,400. Wish to God I could get a job wher I hid out and didn't have to show up to work.

The story has fell by the way side just like the Sheriff new it would. Americans are weak when standing up for what is right. They will pay the 10,000 and that's all she wrote.
Almost a waist of time thinking true justice could happen. I fought the law and the law won. Sorry nothing constructive has happened here. A secure job is kissing Redmonds ass.

From what I hear April Sloan knows a lot about what goes on behind closed doors at the Sheriffs' Office.

Well, finally some comments. The ten grand figure is just a starting point. They have to say damages in excess of that to get it tossed to a certain level of litigation as I recall. I'm no lawyer but I was winked at by John Edwards once.

Has anyone seen dear Phillip?

I so love how these county folks get special treatment. The rest of us got to pay the piper and their salaries.

The iredell County Sheriff's salary is about $101,000/year-a far ways from $8K /week.

Anonymous, where did you get the figure that Redmond makes $8400 per week for a total of $1,058,400 for his remaining time in office? This is without merit and completely innaccurate. By your figures he would be making over $350,000 per year in office. There is NO IREDELL COUNTY employee that makes that much regardless of elected or otherwise employed.

I do not know what his salary is but it could be $8400 per month for over $100,000 a year or $300,000+ for the remaining of his term.

I agree with what you are trying to say but your information is inaccurate. He needs to go rather than paying him to hide or drink a coke at his store etc. If he was paid his "hourly" rate for what he did on the job, he would probalby make enough to buy that coke at his store.
