Mooresville Commissioner Miles Atkins refused to attend a Lake Davidson Working Group session this morning after the group shut the public and the press out of the meeting, the Lake Norman Times reports today.
The group maintains that it does not fall under the requirements of the state's open-meetings law. But at least one legal expert disagrees. To read more, click here: http://thelakepaper.com/articles/2009/01/15/news/news001.txt

Davidson, take notes. Times are a'changin in Mooresville. Thank goodness and thank you Mr. Atkins!!
Exactly what kind of national security issues do these people think they're dealing with with Pete's sake. Come people. It's just some water and some boats. It ain't the Suez Canal.
"Nothing good ever comes out of meetings held behind closed doors".
Seriously. What are they talking about that's so top secret? They should get over themselves. Yesterday.
I think they were talking about the SBI report on Cops for Kids :-)
Good for Miles for doing the right thing and refusing to be part of that meeting. I wasn't aware that ad-hoc committees were excluded from the open meeting laws.
Even if they are excluded from open meetings laws, they're going to go into a secret meeting and decide what people can do with their land? What arrogance !!!!
heres a question for ya the story says the committee has 2 reps from mooresville whose the other one and did he stay for the meeting?
Larry, well at least SOMEBODY would be talking about that report. (=
LOL, yea! The other rep on the committee is Mr. Frank Radon, the deadly gas permeating the town of Mooresville. If Radon was there, I'm sure he stayed and saw nothing wrong with having a closed public meeting.
Frank Rader did indeed stay for the duration of that meeting. He continues to embarrass himself and our town in the process.
Now why is that not a surprise. I guess the group needed Frank to stay and be the numbers man for their meeting.
And we don't even have the right to recall such officials from public office.
Frank Radon! HAHAHAHA! I love it! That one's gonna stick.
We WILL get the oportunity to recall Frank...in 8 1/2 months.
Can't help joining the Radon bashing. My family and I have had one on one's with this moron, and he's the terminal cancer we must rid ourselves of first. The bafoon will go in November.
Kudos, Miles, you are a sraight shooter, honest, and care about what we care about. Don't let the TOM board, and other crooks, persuade you to give up. Along with you on our side, "yes we can", get this Town back.
Heads up you non-Davidson educated boobs, Frank stayed because he knows, unlike the rest of the great unwashed masses, that there are Al-Qaida submarines operating in Lake Davidson. Frank is willing to sacrafice some liberties to keep us safe. That's why there have not been any terrorist attacks on Mt. Morne. Please, people, just a little appreciation for a man of his vision and intellect.
4:05.....
I hope you didn't lose your top secret security clearance disclosing Frank's secret. Who knows...OBL himself may be spying on the Davidson YMCA....fortunately for us, Frank has Super Secret Clearance and can protect us.
OK....this is off topic.....but does anyone else find it insulting that Mooresville Schools called all parents to tell them it was going to be cold so they should dress their kids warmly?
Mooresville: The town that wants to stick their little fingers in to every aspect of our lives.
They should have used Mi-Connection to get the word out -- oh wait, nobody has that -- sorry
At some point in man’s evolution, one of our ancestors had the idea that he/she could stand up and walk on two legs, and the rest is history. Last Thursday, one elected official, Mooresville Commissioner Miles Atkins understood that even though he could not stop a group of self-important officials from shutting the door on the public, he could instead walk out of that sham of a meeting in protest. And the rest shall be history…
All kidding aside about Rader's name....I notice he wasn't quoted by either The Lake Paper or the Charlotte Observer. Is Frank getting wary of the media?
Rader ain't never seen a closed meeting he didn't like.
Jaime you're getting up to 200,000 hits on your blog and it hasn't even been a full year! Amazing.
Our newest president called for "a new era of openness in our country" on his first full day on the job. He signed several executive orders setting ethics guidelines for his staff. "Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency." Whether you voted for him or not, this is a lead that is worth our following right here in Mooresville. Let it begin with an elected official like Miles Atkins.
Miles and I are from different party affiliations, and he has my deepest respect. 6:47,said it all, and I would vote for Miles in a minute if he decided to lead this town. His honesty, true integrity, and caring for the residents of Mooresville, is a true example of what this town needs. C'mon Miles, throw your hat in the ring, the incompetent mayors will be a thing of the past.
Although there may be some unethical individuals masquerading as public servants it is my belief that many have good intentions integrity and a desire to improve their communities. The important ingredient many of them lack is courage. When Miles Atkins walked out of a secret meeting he became an example to all who may lack the courage to do the same when faced with the impossible situation of participating in something they know to be wrong or simply walking out on it. He walked.
This is the kinda dude we need up there in town hall. Man oh man. Bet Rader was fit to be tied. He already can't stand Adkins because Adkins is ten times the man he is. Imagine this didn't endear him to Rader much. Willing to bet Adkins won't loose much sleep over that either!
Adkins for Sheriff!
This is the kind of leader our town desperately needs. Someone who's willing to buck the system when the system is corrupted.
